Principal’s Report continued

You are most likely aware of the ‘s plan for extending Years 11 and 12 into high schools. For some of our students the change to Year 11 can be very challenging. It is with these students in mind that we are working with Don College, , and Sheffield School to investigate alternative programs for these students. These programs will be personalised to the individual student’s needs and may include study at their high school. Work has begun reviewing student data to identify those students who may need additional support in order to complete Year 12. The aim is to assist all of our students to complete their Tasmanian Certificate of Education. If you feel your child may struggle with the transition to Don College and might benefit from an alternative transition process, please contact Miss Wendy Leonard (Assistant Principal/Grade Coordinator) at school on 64 261061, or alternatively, Mr Richard Heathcote (AST Year 11 and 12 Coalition) on 64 249461. Richard’s office is at Devonport High School.

STAFFING Mr Welch will be on sick leave for the remainder of this term and we wish him well in his recovery. Mr Jamie Smith, who has been our Maths Specialist Teacher, will move out of his specialist role and will be taking Mr Welch’s classes. Mr Smith is a wonderful teacher and we couldn’t be happier that he will be continuing to teach at Latrobe High School. Mr Christie will be meeting with his doctor next week, and we hope to see Mr Christie back at work, in some capacity, from Wednesday of next week. A great opportunity has arisen for Miss Johnson; starting next week, she will be working at Mountain Heights for six weeks as Literacy Coach. Miss Johnson will have a profound impact on the teaching of Literacy at Mountain Heights. We wish Miss Johnson well. Mrs Rodman is returning off maternity leave and we welcome Miss Paice to Latrobe High School. Mrs Rodman and Miss Paice will be teaching English and History classes from next week.

SCHOOL REDEVELOPMENT Over the last fortnight, we have had improved weather and a large amount of progress has been made. The painters are completing their final touches in the new Maths rooms, the joiners have started installing the joinery and the bricklayers are in the progress of cladding the outside of the building. The buildings that surround the Gymnasium are wrapped up and the roofing has been installed. It won’t be long until they start plastering these areas. We are currently exploring the cost of upgrading our heating and lighting in the gymnasium and will let you know the outcome of this in due course.

IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL UNIFORM At the end of last week, we outlined the importance of school uniform to all students, as the standard of uniform has been slipping for a small number of students. Students who are out of uniform without a note from home are to spend their lunch time at the front office. I would like to thank parents and students for the effort they have made to make sure they are in full school uniform. The school uniform builds a sense of connectedness among students and to the school. When worn well, it enhances the way in which individuals and the school are viewed in the community. Uniform also means that students can easily be identified as a member of LHS, increasing safety and supervision for all students. I would like to highlight that black shoes are the required item for footwear and the only trackpants that are acceptable are the navy blue parachute pant. These can be purchased from our school office.

2017 GRADE 7 PARENT AND STUDENT INFORMATION EVENING - WEDNESDAY 14 SEPTEMBER We are excited about holding our ‘Parent and Student Information Evening’ on Wednesday 14 September for all prospective 2017 Grade 7 students and their parents. The evening starts at 6:30pm in our school Gymnasium. Parents and students who are unable to make it on the night are encouraged to contact the main office to arrange a meeting and tour of the school.

NAPLAN Results While NAPLAN is one test on one day, it does give us important data that informs future teaching decisions and gives us an idea of how we are tracking as a school over time. It also provides us with important data on each individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. The data for Latrobe High School is showing very clearly that the work we have undertaken over the last few years is showing positive results. Over the next week we will be mailing out to parents of Grade 7 and 9 students their sons’/ daughters’ individual NAPLAN results. Not all students need to see this data. We will leave it in your hands to decide if your son/daughter will benefit from seeing their individual data.

GRADE 7 REPORT

Students have worked well this fortnight with all the building work happening around the school which could disrupt learning. Students have been focused on their work and ignoring the constant building renovations and changing of play zones successfully. The Grade 7 locker area is nearly complete which will mean a change from the current locker area (soon to be the library) to the new undercover walkway. Some key dates coming up this term are as follows: On the September 1, students will have a chance to perform an act for Red Faces. Students need to complete an act and ensure that they apply to perform via a form handed out in home room. The third lot of immunisations will occur on Wednesday September 14. This immunisation will be Gardasil. We have now concluded our feeder primary school visits with our Grade 7 helpers. The next focus for transition with Grade 7 help will be the Camp Clayton Challenge Days on August 30 and August 31. A notice will be sent home with the students selected to assist on those days. The following students were deemed stars in their classes this fortnight: 7A: Dylan has begun the term well with excellent punctuality to class and is showing more confidence around the school.

7B: Tayden showed confidence by being the goal keeper whilst playing in the Grade 10 soccer team and was successful in stopping most of the goals, which led his team to victory.

7C: Emma is organised and polite in class and always strives to do her best.

Well done, Emma.

7D: Anna is conscientious in class and is always polite and caring. Anna has settled in well this term and continues to strive to do her best.

Congratulations to the Strength Award recipients so far this term! Students who have been rewarded are: Oakli Marshall, Jack Huddlestone, Kelsey Hedditch, Mahtia Bissett, Maddison McClure, Asha Lamprey and Tayden Lyall.

Thank you to all the parents who have made contact to me in regards to their child. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any issues/concerns or to find out further information on [email protected]

MR DANIEL KARAFILIS GRADE 8 COORDINATOR

GRADE 10 REPORT This week Grade 10 students were lucky enough to receive a visit from some Don College staff and ex- students of Latrobe High School. This is part of the excellent transition process now put into place, to help students feel more comfortable with their entry into Year 11. Students listened to stories from the current Don College students as well as viewed a short video demonstrating college life. Students were also given an opportunity to talk with staff after the presentation. There are a number of important dates listed on the following page relating to your child’s transition to Don College. Please put these dates in your diary. Currently there are a number of students still not wearing the correct uniform to school, especially trousers. We have placed a list of Latrobe High School’s school uniform in many newsletters. If there is an issue regarding uniform, please contact me so we can organise something for your child. Congratulations to the following students who have received Strength Awards: Tully Mignot, Rachel Bentley and Meg Hardman. I am sure I will see many more over the next few weeks. It is important for all Grade Ten students to knuckle down into their studies, as this term will be over before we know it. Towards the end of term, a letter will be sent out to parents/guardians of any student at risk of not receiving an assessment in their subjects. I hope these are minimal, as often it is very hard to try and catch up by the time we reach Term Four. If you have any concerns regarding your child, please contact me on the school’s number.

HOCKEY: Congratulations to Rachel Bentley on her selection in the State Under 16 Girl’s Hockey team. Rachel is playing in the National Hockey Championships in Melbourne this week. We wish her all the best! HEALTH: Currently in our Health classes, we are focussing on Relationships and Sexuality. Students have shown maturity and have engaged in some excellent discussion so far. If you are interested in obtaining a guide to how to talk to your child about “the birds and the bees”, the Tasmanian Government has compiled a guide which the school has many copies of, so please come and collect a copy from our front office. PHYSICAL EDUCATION: With the redevelopment still occurring, we are still having floating lessons. If the weather is ok, PE will be outside; if inclement, we will do health activities in the classroom. We are currently in the final week of our volleyball unit before moving to an Olympic and Paralympic unit for four weeks. LATROBE BASKETBALL CLUB: Latrobe Basketball Club held its annual presentation evening last weekend with many Latrobe High School students receiving awards. Two students won two prestigious awards for their excellent season. Will Spinks was awarded the ‘Most Outstanding Junior Basketballer’ and Edward Lancaster was awarded the ‘Anton Kenzie Memorial Award’ for commitment and loyalty to the Latrobe Demons Basketball Club.

SCHOOL SOCCER: There are two games left with the very last game to be held at Meercroft Park, Devonport on Wednesday 24 August. So far the girls are sitting first and second on the ladder with the deciding game happening next Wednesday here at school from 4pm. The Grade 7/8 team currently hold a two goal advantage over the Grade 9/10 team, so the Grade 9/10 team will need to win by three or more goals to secure the championship. 6 A-SIDE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS: The recent 6-a-side soccer championships were held last Sunday, 7 August. Latrobe High School entered three teams in the competition with a combined Grade 7/8/9/10 Boys team in the Grade 10 boys roster and we had two teams in the girls roster. The boys team played in the Grand Final against St. Brendan-Shaw College and won 2 – 1 in extra time. Congratulations to Xavier McClymont, Clinton Holliday, Liam Slatter, Tayden Lyall, Adam Price and Ben Price on your victory. We had two teams in the girls roster with a Grade 7/8 team competing against the Grade 9/10 team in a 9/10 roster. The Grade 9/10 team were victorious against Reece High School with the game going into extra time with Latrobe winning on scoring shots. Congratulations to Chloe Nicholls, Asha Beveridge, Amy White, Erin Redpath, Antoinette Clarke, Melinda Powell, Amber Hall and Olivia Smith.

STATE SOCCER SELECTION: Congratulations to Jayden Last who has been selected to represent in the National Football (Soccer) Championships in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales in early October. SCHOOL GIRLS FOOTBALL: Miss Hardy has started training the girls ready for the upcoming games. The first game for the girls will be on Friday August 12 at 3:45pm at Reece High School. Students are to find their own transport to and from the games. Best of luck to the girls and hopefully we can continue our tradition of being highly successful in the girls football roster. HPE HOTSPOT 5/6 Sport Expo

On Tuesday 2 August, 14 Grade 9 and 10 students volunteered their time to assist at the NWPSSA Grade 5/6 Sports Expo. They selected their chosen sport where they were required to umpire a number of games throughout the day. I have received some positive feedback from the coordinators to describe their efforts: ‘Mine were fantastic. Especially Rachel and Duncan at the end packing up.’ ‘They were also great with the younger kids and the encouragement they offered all students.’ ‘Your four leaders were great. Please make sure you thank them from me.’ ‘The three boys that you sent to football at Byard Park were brilliant. They did a great job and I had no issues with them at all.’ I would like to thank the following students for displaying the school values and representing the school in such a positive manner: Billie Hodge, Kyle Lamprey, Jacob Woodcock, Eli Connelly, Chloe Nicholls, Tayla Jones, Jesse Langmaid, Caleb Armstrong, Duncan Grey, Rachel Bentley, Zac Clarke, Michaela Marshall, Darcy Miller and Meg Sanderson

STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT DAIRY IN THE CLASSROOM

Passionate secondary school students are learning all about dairy through the innovative Dairy Australia program, ‘Cows Create Careers – Manufacturing’.

‘Cows Create Careers – Manufacturing’ is a school-based program that introduces food and technology students to dairy manufacturing careers and education pathways. Five schools in the Devonport region will be participating in the program this year: , Leighland Christian School, Sheffield School, and Latrobe High School.

The program involves students visiting a dairy manufacturing site and student teams working together to complete dairy manufacturing assessment tasks, such as designing their own dairy recipes. Curriculum material is provided to schools at no cost.

Dairy industry advocates who have a deep industry knowledge visit the school to support and encourage students throughout the program.

Industry advocates will volunteer their time to host schools and talk to students about dairy manufacturing career pathways.

‘Cows Create Careers – Manufacturing’ program manager, Dr. Mani Iyer, believes that the Dairy Australia program is an innovative channel to build awareness of dairy careers and pathways. “The program provides a platform to introduce secondary students to the Australian dairy industry, dairy processes and dairy products,” said Dr Iyer.

“Since its pilot in 2010 the program has grown significantly and has gained strong support from dairy manufacturing companies,” he said. “In 2015, 40 schools across Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania participated in the program, with 100% of the schools incorporating the project into their school curriculum.”

On completion of the program, teachers and students will be recognised at a presentation ceremony to award the programs winning schools.

The Devonport presentation ceremony will be held on Thursday 27 October 2016, in Devonport. The winning school will win a prize of $500 and the winning team will be awarded a $50 iTunes voucher per student.

The Cows Create Careers program is funded and managed by Dairy Australia and conducted by Jaydee Events Pty Ltd.

Dairy Australia is the national services body for the Australian dairy industry. The company acts as the collective investment arm of the industry, investing in essential research, development, extension and industry services. For more information on Dairy Australia and dairy service levy investments visit www.dairyaustralia.com.au.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL Appointments

We understand some students may need to leave school during the day to attend appointments. If this is the case, it is essential they follow the school protocols.

 A note of permission should be provided from the parents, or a phone call, SMS or Skoolbag message to the office, if it is a pre-arranged appointment.

 Students need to sign out at the front office and then sign back in, if and when they return to school.

 Students must be collected from the front office, not met in the car park or on the road.

 The person who collects the student must also sign them out.

720’s GREY TROUSERS - $10 Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

If you volunteer at this school, you will be required to register for ‘Registration to Work with Vulnerable People’. This will be mandatory by 1 September 2016.

In July 2014, the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 commenced in Tasmania. This registration aims to significantly improve safeguards to help keep children safe from harm.

These are the provisions under the new legislation: Employees and volunteers must apply for their own Working with Vulnerable People Registration (RWVP) once every three years. Employers can check a person is registered using the Tasmanian Department of Justice (DoJ) website at http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children. The same RWVP will apply to everyone – employees, self-employed people and volunteers. There are two forms of Registration, they being Volunteer Class and Employment/Volunteer class registration. This second class allows a person to both work and volunteer with children. Everyone with registration will be continuously monitored for serious offences.

It is extremely important that staff and volunteers are registered and that their school or business unit is recorded against the registrant. This information is used to communicate decisions about the suitability of people to work with children. This information can be checked and recorded using the DoJ website using the registrant’s registration number and surname.

HOW TO APPLY FOR RWVP? Complete the online application form. This is available from the website: http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children. It is critical that you choose Department of Education from the drop down box. DO NOT PAY

Print the ‘application receipt’ which is generated when the application has been completed in full. If you do not have access to a printer, record the reference number and take that to a Service Tasmania Shop.

Take the ‘application receipt’ to a Service Tasmania Shop, have your photo taken and have your identity confirmed. You will need to satisfy the identity requirements. A driver’s licence will do this if it displays your correct name and address. Advise the staff that you are a volunteer with DoE and ask for a deferred payment. DO NOT PAY. The bill will be sent to DoE.

The Tasmanian Department of Justice will assess and process applications and issue the Assessment Notice and Working with Vulnerable People Registration card directly to the applicant.

Generally applicants will receive their results within six weeks of completing the application process. There may be delays, however, depending on the applicant’s personal information.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK OUR OFFICE STAFF

PRODUCTION REPORT

With only twelve lessons left and a handful of weekend rehearsals to go, Latrobe High School’s Creepytown rehearsals are now on the downhill strait. On return from my week long, long service leave, it was pleasing to note that the cast have, once again, progressed with their characterisation, and especially their sharper delivery of the choreography and songs. I felt a sense of pride at our recent weekend rehearsal as I watched our students’ commitment grow, striving together as a team, in preparation for delivering another great show for family, friends and the community. I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed with such a talented group of performers. At this point in time, I urge parents to help get our cast and crew to the remaining weekend rehearsals. It is here that we iron out the finer details and make changes to help improve the quality of the performances. The hours that these teenagers put into our show will certainly be rewarded with fond memories of being involved, whether they are a main character, chorus member or part of the back stage crew. The great thing about a high school musical production is that it is a team effort and each part and role is just as important as the next. I can’t wait to see these kids building new bonds and supporting each other as the weeks regress to days before our performance week. The thrill of the lights going down, and knowing that their support crew are both on stage with them, backstage and in the audience, will be a moment during their high school lives that they will never forget. Special thanks goes to our director, Wendy Leonard, who weaves her magic each time we prepare for a school musical; to Gavin Gee, our clever ‘go to’ man – awesome with set and back stage management; Hannah Rowlands, for her expert guidance with the school band and singing; Lyn Butler for her countless hours working on costume design and making; our beautiful office ladies, who are constantly kept busy with so many behind the scenes jobs; Meg Sanderson for always showing her initiative with SFX and music; Simon Taylor and Tony Robertson for constructing our set; and Sandra Jenkins and her Art crew for painting our magnificent sets. You are all amazing and a vital part of the foundations for our production. On behalf of the management team, I sincerely thank you for your time and willingness to help out. We appreciate it so much.
