Abstract Harry Benshoff has boldly proclaimed that ‘horror stories and monster movies, perhaps more than any other genre, actively invoke queer readings’ (1997, p. 6). For Benshoff, gay audiences have forged cultural identifications with the counter-hegemonic figure of the ‘monster queer’ who disrupts the heterosexual status quo. However, beyond identification with the monstrous outsider, there is at present little understanding of the interpretations that gay fans mobilise around different forms and features of horror and the cultural connections they establish with other horror fans online. In addressing this gap, this thesis employs a multi-sited netnographic method to study gay horror fandom. This holistic approach seeks to investigate spaces created by and for gay horror fans, in addition to their presence on a mainstream horror site and a gay online forum. In doing so, this study argues that gay fans forge deep emotional connections with horror that links particular textual features to the construction and articulation of their sexual and fannish identities. In developing the concept of ‘emotional capital’ that establishes intersubjective recognition between gay fans, this thesis argues that this capital is destabilised in much larger spaces of fandom where gay fans perform the successful ‘doing of being’ a horror fan (Hills, 2005). -

‘Something is Trying to Get Inside My Body’: A Gay Reception and Narrative Analysis of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge ADAM SCALES, University of East Anglia ABSTRACT The critical understanding of horror film has traditionally been locked into a particular psychoanalytic framework concerning audience composition of the genre, as well as the identity politics operating within (Twitchell 1985; Carroll 1990; Clover 1992; Creed 1993; Grant 1996). Within this work, little attention has been paid to alternative audience demographics, especially gay and sexually non-normative viewers. This is rather surprising considering the horror film, and the monster in particular, has been understood as a material manifestation of queerness, as that which bourgeois ideology cannot accept and must therefore construct as ‘Other’ (Benshoff 1997; Wood 1986; Saunders 1998). As a result, this article looks at a gay online reception of gay audiences of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (Jack Sholder, 1985). Such a text is important, as it fractures the established formula of the slasher film by introducing a ‘male scream queen’ – a ‘final boy’ named Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton). This article employs Janet Staiger’s (2000) work on reception studies to argue that the strategies and tactics brought by the spectator to the filmic experience are constructed by particular historical circumstances, which in turn, assist in the formation of ‘interpretive communities’. While the introduction of the final boy certainly disrupts fixed points of gendered identification, such features are only part of a holistic approach to understanding the subjective responses of gay audiences to Jesse’s characterisation. -

SUBURBAN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT - DAY A big, yellow SCHOOL BUS pulls up to a corner and discharges a group of TEENAGERS. It's one of those fantastic spring afternoons and the kids take to their freedom like they were just sprung from Leavenworth. KIDS G'night, Joe...Have a good weekend, etc. The BUS DRIVER doesn't answer but nods and smiles as they deboard. He is a pleasant looking elderly man, wearing a khaki work shirt, a matching cap and chewing on an unlit, twenty-five cent stogie. The DOORS fold shut, the GEARS GRIND and the bus continues along its route. INT. SCHOOL BUS - DAY While there are only about a dozen kids on the bus, the noise level is deafening. GIRLS are yapping, GUYS are horsing around, someone is fiddling with a ghetto-blaster, trying to decide among several loud stations. EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY The bus turns a corner, taking them out of the development and past some older, less identical looking residences spaced more widely apart. INT. SCHOOL BUS - DAY The Driver downshifts the old heap, pulls the wheel over to the curb and reaches over to push the door lever open. KIDS file out down he aisle, some of them wishing him well as they leave. ANOTHER ANGLE as the gears grind again and the bus pulls away. We see that there are only a few KIDS remaining: TWO GIRLS sit together toward the center and a lone, nerdy-looking BOY sits at the rear. -

What is the Nightmare Series Encyclopedia? A. The Nightmare Series Encyclopedia (NSE) is a bonus DVD in the Nightmare on Elm Street Collection. This boxed set boasts beautiful anamorphic transfers of all seven Elm Street films. Rather than adding trailers, outtakes, and other supplements to each of the seven movie DVDs, New Line decided collect all of their extra material on an eigth disc. The result of this decision was the NSE. The Elm Street boxed set is the only way to get the NSE. Q. What's on the NSE? A. The NSE contains interviews with the cast and crew of the Elm Street movies, "Krueger Quips" from the set of Elm Street 5, snippets from Freddy's appearances on MTV, music videos from the films, still galleries, alternate endings to Elm Street 1, and trailers for all seven movies. In all, there are 93 video clips and 3 still galleries on the disc adding up to more than 3.5 hours of material. Q. How is the NSE organized? A. The NSE is split into three sections: Primetime, Labyrinth, and Index. Primetime contains the featurette "Welcome to Primetime." "Welcome to Primetime" is the only self-contained documentary on the disc. There are 10 interviews and 1 alternate ending to Elm Street 1 in Primetime. -

When Reid’s book won the 2014 Governor General’s 1 Award for Children’s Literature —arguably Canada’s most prestigious and high-profile literary prize—the Internet combusted. Reid’s protagonist Jude, an unapologetically queer 15-year-old who takes drugs, has sex, and describes in detail his graphic and often violent fantasies, was not to the taste of all critics. National Post columnist Barbara Kay, for example, published a polemical editorial under the title “Wasted tax dollars on a values-void novel” in which she bemoans Jude’s lack of “moral growth.” Seemingly inspired by Kay, children’s book author Cathy Clark launched a petition calling for the Canadian government to rescind the award given the book’s “vulgar content” (Keeler). -
