  • Logging Into Horror's Closet
Logging into Horror’s Closet: Gay Fans, the Horror Film and Online Culture Adam Christopher Scales Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies September 2015 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Abstract Harry Benshoff has boldly proclaimed that ‘horror stories and monster movies, perhaps more than any other genre, actively invoke queer readings’ (1997, p. 6). For Benshoff, gay audiences have forged cultural identifications with the counter-hegemonic figure of the ‘monster queer’ who disrupts the heterosexual status quo. However, beyond identification with the monstrous outsider, there is at present little understanding of the interpretations that gay fans mobilise around different forms and features of horror and the cultural connections they establish with other horror fans online. In addressing this gap, this thesis employs a multi-sited netnographic method to study gay horror fandom. This holistic approach seeks to investigate spaces created by and for gay horror fans, in addition to their presence on a mainstream horror site and a gay online forum. In doing so, this study argues that gay fans forge deep emotional connections with horror that links particular textual features to the construction and articulation of their sexual and fannish identities. In developing the concept of ‘emotional capital’ that establishes intersubjective recognition between gay fans, this thesis argues that this capital is destabilised in much larger spaces of fandom where gay fans perform the successful ‘doing of being’ a horror fan (Hills, 2005).

  • Long Journey Of
Photography by Brent Mykytyshyn The long journey of by Marcello Di Cintio Decades after he fled his childhood home and church, the son of America’s most controversial preacher has found a life—if not all the answers—in Calgary. God hates fags. According to the Westboro Baptist Church in To- peka, Kansas, God also hates America, Canada, and Islam. God hates Barack Obama—who, as it turns out, is the Antichrist. He hates Paul McCartney and Justin Timberlake (“The fags love him, and he them. His filth justifies their filth,” says the WBC). But God hates fags most of all. God also hates Nathan Phelps. At least that is what Nate thought on his 18th birthday in 1976, back when he still believed that God exists. At the stroke of midnight—the precise moment he legally became an adult and couldn’t be dragged back—Nate stepped out the door of his family’s Topeka compound and left the Westboro Baptist Church behind. Nate loaded a few belongings into the old Rambler he’d bought secretly for $350 and drove away. “I left there believ- ing with the same certainty that the sun is going to rise in the east that around the year 2000 Christ would come and I was going to hell,” Nate said. “I knew I would suffer for an eternity.” Nate had already suffered. For the first 18 years of his life, Nate cowered under the tyranny of his father, Fred Phelps, the extremist Calvinist preacher and disbarred lawyer who founded Westboro Baptist Church in 1955.

  • A Gay Reception and Narrative Analysis of a Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’S Revenge
‘Something is Trying to Get Inside My Body’: A Gay Reception and Narrative Analysis of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge ADAM SCALES, University of East Anglia ABSTRACT The critical understanding of horror film has traditionally been locked into a particular psychoanalytic framework concerning audience composition of the genre, as well as the identity politics operating within (Twitchell 1985; Carroll 1990; Clover 1992; Creed 1993; Grant 1996). Within this work, little attention has been paid to alternative audience demographics, especially gay and sexually non-normative viewers. This is rather surprising considering the horror film, and the monster in particular, has been understood as a material manifestation of queerness, as that which bourgeois ideology cannot accept and must therefore construct as ‘Other’ (Benshoff 1997; Wood 1986; Saunders 1998). As a result, this article looks at a gay online reception of gay audiences of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (Jack Sholder, 1985). Such a text is important, as it fractures the established formula of the slasher film by introducing a ‘male scream queen’ – a ‘final boy’ named Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton). This article employs Janet Staiger’s (2000) work on reception studies to argue that the strategies and tactics brought by the spectator to the filmic experience are constructed by particular historical circumstances, which in turn, assist in the formation of ‘interpretive communities’. While the introduction of the final boy certainly disrupts fixed points of gendered identification, such features are only part of a holistic approach to understanding the subjective responses of gay audiences to Jesse’s characterisation.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY’S REVENGE Written By David Chaskin © New Line Cinema Courtesy of http://nightmareonelmstreetfilms.com BEGIN MAIN TITLE SEQUENCE EXT. SUBURBAN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT - DAY A big, yellow SCHOOL BUS pulls up to a corner and discharges a group of TEENAGERS. It's one of those fantastic spring afternoons and the kids take to their freedom like they were just sprung from Leavenworth. KIDS G'night, Joe...Have a good weekend, etc. The BUS DRIVER doesn't answer but nods and smiles as they deboard. He is a pleasant looking elderly man, wearing a khaki work shirt, a matching cap and chewing on an unlit, twenty-five cent stogie. The DOORS fold shut, the GEARS GRIND and the bus continues along its route. INT. SCHOOL BUS - DAY While there are only about a dozen kids on the bus, the noise level is deafening. GIRLS are yapping, GUYS are horsing around, someone is fiddling with a ghetto-blaster, trying to decide among several loud stations. EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY The bus turns a corner, taking them out of the development and past some older, less identical looking residences spaced more widely apart. INT. SCHOOL BUS - DAY The Driver downshifts the old heap, pulls the wheel over to the curb and reaches over to push the door lever open. KIDS file out down he aisle, some of them wishing him well as they leave. ANOTHER ANGLE as the gears grind again and the bus pulls away. We see that there are only a few KIDS remaining: TWO GIRLS sit together toward the center and a lone, nerdy-looking BOY sits at the rear.

Mason and Whitehead: When Everything Feels Like the Horror Movies: The Ghostliness of Opening Credits To call Raziel Reid’s novel When Everything Feels Like the Movies “controversial” would be to wildly understate its impact. When Reid’s book won the 2014 Governor General’s 1 Award for Children’s Literature —arguably Canada’s most prestigious and high-profile literary prize—the Internet combusted. Reid’s protagonist Jude, an unapologetically queer 15-year-old who takes drugs, has sex, and describes in detail his graphic and often violent fantasies, was not to the taste of all critics. National Post columnist Barbara Kay, for example, published a polemical editorial under the title “Wasted tax dollars on a values-void novel” in which she bemoans Jude’s lack of “moral growth.” Seemingly inspired by Kay, children’s book author Cathy Clark launched a petition calling for the Canadian government to rescind the award given the book’s “vulgar content” (Keeler).

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street 5.5: Freddy's Triumph
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5.5 FREDDY’S TRIUMPH Screenplay by George Willson Based on characters created by Wes Craven & David Chaskin, Bruce Wagner, Chuck Russell, Bran Helgeland, William Kotzwinkle, Scott Pierce, John Skipp, Craig Spector, Leslie Bohem, Rachel Talalay, and Michael DeLuca “Freddy”, “Freddy Krueger” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” are registered trademarks of New Line Cinema Corporation Explanation: The first time I saw Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, I was hopelessly lost in an extremely confusing plot. All the rules that were established and followed (to an extent) in the previous movies were broken in this part. Freddy continually got at people or inexplicable “dream-like” things happened to people while they were awake. My solution to this problem was to create a prequel to Freddy’s Dead. It hopes to give a little explanation to why things happened they way they did, and also hints to a backstory of Freddy so that the “revelation” of Katherine Krueger in Freddy’s Dead doesn’t feel so cheap. This is not intended to be a piece of high art, but simply a desire I’ve had since I watched Freddy’s Dead and got lost in the mess it was. It also hopes to solidify the series in a way that no other sequel has done by recalling characters who survived other parts. For example, a lot of people want to forget about Nightmare 2, but this script uses it for what it was: a way for Freddy to enter the real world, which is basically what has happened in Freddy’s Dead.

a year of Living Prayerfully How a Curious Traveler Met the Pope, Walked on Coals, Danced with Rabbis, and REVIVED HIS PRAYER LIFE jared brock year_of_living_prayerfully_a.indd 3 11/25/2014 11:40:41 AM Seven Ways to Pray here are a few prayer ideas to get you started. Remember: prayer is about relationship, not routine. It doesn’t have to be boring! 1. Shalom If you watch the news, witness a conflict, or hear of a tough situation, pray for peace. You can also say hello or good-bye or sign your e-mails with this powerful, one-word prayer. 2. Bible verses If you read a verse that sounds like it could be a prayer for a certain situation, tailor it accordingly and pray it out loud. 3. Silence As the Rule of Taizé encourages, “maintain inner silence in all things so as to dwell with Christ.” Practice stillness in order to commune with Jesus. 4. Move Attach physicality to spirituality, whether it’s through breathing, walking, running, eating, bathing, or driving. Get creative! 5. Hold in the light Have you run out of words to pray? Picture someone in the light of God’s grace. Hold them there, and ask God to do what only He can do. 319 year_of_living_prayerfully_a.indd 319 11/25/2014 11:41:20 AM A Year of Living Prayerfully 6.
