Juilliard Dance Choreographic Honors Edition 2018 Welcome to Juilliard Dance Choreographic Honors 2018!

It has been my great privilege to attend and introduce each of the eight workshop showings of our students’ choreography this school year. Our students have challenged themselves as creators, muses, and collaborators in an effort to find artistic growth.

The dances you will see tonight were all selected from these workshops, and the faculty and I want to recognize that there is an enormous amount of additional talent, exploration, , performed as Sounddance , performed

and discovery from choreographers throughout our student body that we simply could O’Connor Rosalie photos by not fit onto the stage this weekend. We aim to support all of our students in their journey to find their artistic voices, and we applaud their individual and collective work this year.

Thank you for your ongoing encouragement of our many imaginative choreographic voices as they continue to refine and develop what they have to say.

Enjoy. a moment from Sounddance ,

8 About Juilliard Dance

Juilliard Dance aims to create true contemporary dancers—trained equally in classical ballet and modern dance. Established in 1951 by William Schuman during his tenure as president of The Juilliard School, with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill, Juilliard became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both contemporary and ballet techniques.

In addition to the daily ballet and modern technique classes, every dancer participates in classical and contemporary partnering, dance composition, anatomy, acting, dance history, stagecraft, production, music theory, repertory, and elements of performing. Dancers are encouraged to present their own choreographed works in informal concerts and workshop presentations. Each fall every class has the opportunity to work Juilliard with established choreographers in premieres as part of the New Dances Dance aims performances. Recent commissions include works by Bryan Arias, Roy to create true Assaf, Gentian Doda, John Heginbotham, Matthew Neenan, Gustavo contemporary Ramirez Sansano, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and Pam Tanowitz. Spring dancers—trained performances give dancers the opportunity to perform in established equally in works from repertory. Recent repertory performances include works by classical ballet Pina Bausch, Merce Cunnngham, Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Martha and modern Graham, Jirˇí Kylián, José Limón, Mark Morris, Crystal Pite, Jerome dance. 16 Juilliard Scholarship Fund

The Juilliard School is home to more than 800 dancers, actors, and musicians, over 90 percent of whom are eligible for financial aid. With your help, we can offer the scholarship support that makes a world of difference—to them and to the global future of dance, drama, and music. Behind every Juilliard artist is all of Juilliard—including you.
