COLLADO Deputy Administrator ISSN 0022-3603 ii PREFACE The Journal of Philippine Statistics (JPS) is a quarterly publication of the National Statistics Office (NSO). It furnishes data users with statistical information on the socioeconomic development of the country in accordance with the NSO’s mission of providing timely, accurate, and reliable information as bases for plans, policies and decisions, and as inputs to academic pursuits, researches, and development projects. The statistical series contained in this publication are updated for continuity and for comparative analysis whenever possible. Tabular data usually cover two or more periods for maximum comparability. This issue presents the latest available statistics on population and housing; labor and employment; travel and tourism; social welfare, and community development; education and culture; health, nutrition and vital statistics; and defense, crime and delinquency. Featured in this issue are statistics on the Philippine Electronics Industry. It is considered the gear of growth for the manufacturing sector as it now shares more than a fourth of its total value output. Most of the statistics shown here were taken from surveys and censuses conducted by the NSO and other offices, as well as from administrative forms or records compiled by various agencies. Acknowledgment, therefore, is extended to all secondary data sources without whose cooperation and support, the consolidation of information and the publication of this journal would not have been possible. The two episodes, called Tiempo de Valientes I y II [Time to be Brave I and II], were filmed outside Madrid in November 2015, turning the cold Spanish winter into the tropical Philippines of 1898.

    HISTORIA Y HUMANIDADES Aspectos sanitarios en el asedio de Baler, Filipinas (1898-1899) Martín Ruiz JA.1 Sanid. mil. 2015; 71 (4): 269-274; ISSN: 1887-8571 RESUMEN Estudiamos la situación sanitaria durante el prolongado asedio de Baler con ocasión de la guerra de independencia de Filipinas y posterior intervención norteamericana (1898-1899), contemplando tanto los medios materiales y humanos de que disponían como las heridas y enfer- medades a las que hubieron de hacer frente. No cabe duda que estas últimas se vieron favorecidas por las deficientes condiciones higiénicas de la iglesia en la que se refugiaron y, sobre todo, la mala alimentación que también examinamos dada su relación con estos aspectos médi- cos, de tal modo que, al igual que aconteció al resto del Ejército español que combatía en Filipinas o en Cuba, fueron las enfermedades las responsables de la mayor parte de los fallecimientos al causar más bajas que los propios sitiadores. Sanitary aspects in the siege of Baler, Philippines (1898-1899) SUMMARY: We study the sanitary situation during Baler’s long siege within The Philippines war of independence and the later North American intervention (1898-1899), contemplating not only the material and human resources they had but also the wounds and diseases they had to face. Undoubtedly, the latter were favoured by the deficient hygienic conditions of the church where they found shelter and, es- pecially, by the bad food supply which is also examined here due to its relation with these medical aspects. As a result, as it happened to the rest of the Spanish Army fighting in The Philippines or in Cuba, the diseases were the main cause for most of the deaths here, outnumbering those caused by the besiegers.

Featured in this issue is the Bottled Water Industry. This growing industry came about as a result of having difficulty in obtaining potable supply of drinking water particularly in the metropolis. Most of the statistics shown here were taken from surveys and censuses conducted by the NSO and other offices, as well as from administrative forms or records compiled by various agencies. Acknowledgment, therefore, is extended to all secondary data sources without whose cooperation and support, the consolidation of information and the publication of this journal would not have been possible.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILIPPINES The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands off the southeast coast of the Asian mainland1. Spanning 1,854 kilometers from north to south and 1,110 kilometers from east to west, it has a total land area of 300,000 sq.km. It is bounded on the north by the Bashi Channel, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the west by the South China Sea, and on the south by Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea. The archipelago is divided into three major island groups: Luzon, the largest island, in the north; Visayas, a cluster of smaller islands including Samar, the third largest island, in the middle; and Mindanao, the second largest island, in the south. Many of the islands are of volcanic origin. The Philippines has more than 200 volcanoes, although only 21 of these are active. When Mount Pinatubo, dormant for 600 years, erupted in 1991, it cooled the weather around the globe. Numerous fault lines crisscross the archipelago, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. The country is also visited by an average of 20 typhoons a year. The Philippines, however, is rich in biodiversity and is blessed with majestic mountain peaks, white sand beaches, lush green countryside, and a generally warm climate.
