VISUALIZING ANNA KARENINA by Irina Makoveeva Master degree, Moscow Lomonosov State University, 1987 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2007 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Irina Makoveeva It was defended on April 30, 2007 and approved by Lucy Fischer, Professor, Department of English John B. Lyon, Assistant Professor, Germanic Languages and Literatures Philip Watts, Associate Professor, French and Italian Languages and Literatures Dissertation Advisor: Helena Goscilo, Professor, Slavic Languages and Literatures ii Copyright © by Irina Makoveeva 2007 iii VISUALIZING ANNA KARENINA Irina Makoveeva, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2007 Incorporated into contemporary culture through high-, middle-, and lowbrow manifestations, Tolstoi’s Anna Karenina repeatedly demonstrates its ubiquity. The novel’s reincarnations in various cultural forms consistently privilege the Anna-Vronskii story line over the parallel narrative of Kitty and Levin, thus “liberating” the adultery myth from its novelistic shackles. This remarkable diffusion and myth-oriented interpretation of Anna Karenina largely stems from the cinema’s fascination with the novel. The freedom with which filmmakers handle the allegedly well-known novel reveals the discrepancy between the literary text and its idea in the collective unconscious. This freedom also indicates that in popular awareness visual embodiments of Anna Karenina have become more authoritative than the novel itself. While shedding light on dramatic changes that have occurred in the “collective” idea of Tolstoi’s novel, cinema—as a medium aiming at a mass audience—also manifests its essential connection with a myth of love that is stronger than death.

  • JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works by Nick Fuller I
JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works By Nick Fuller I. Introduction Jules Massenet’s operas made him one of the most popular composers of the late nineteenth century, his works performed throughout Europe, the Americas and North Africa. After World War I, he was seen as old- fashioned, and nearly all of his operas, apart from Werther and Manon , vanished from the mainstream repertoire. The opera-going public still know Massenet best for Manon , Werther , and the Méditation from Thaïs , but to believe, as The Grove Dictionary of Opera wrote in 1954, that ‘to have heard Manon is to have heard all of him’ is to do the composer a gross disservice. Massenet wrote twenty-seven operas, many of which are at least as good as Manon and Werther . Nearly all are theatrically effective, boast beautiful music and display insightful characterisation and an instinct for dramatic and psychological truth. In recent decades, Massenet’s work has regained popularity. Although he Figure 1 Jules Massenet, drawing by Ernesto Fontana (Source: is not the household name he once http://artlyriquefr.fr/personnages/Massenet%20Jules.html) was, and many of his operas remain little known, he has been winning new audiences. Conductors like Richard Bonynge, Julius Rudel and Patrick Fournillier have championed Massenet, while since 1990 a biennial Massenet festival has been held in his birthplace, Saint-Étienne, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, its mission to rediscover Massenet’s operas. His work has been performed in the world’s major opera houses under the baton of conductors Thomas Beecham, Colin Davis, Charles Mackerras, Michel Plasson, Riccardo Chailly and Antonio Pappano, and sung by Joan Sutherland, José van Dam, Frederica von Stade, Nicolai Gedda, Roberto Alagna, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Plácido Domingo.

  • Tchaikovsky's the Queen of Spades
Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades - A survey of the major recordings by Ralph Moore The Queen of Spades, alternatively known as Pique Dame is Tchaikovsky’s “other” opera. He considered it to be his best, and in recent years it has been catching up in popularity with the more celebrated Eugene Onegin (another dark Pushkin tale); none of his eight other operas rivals those two - Iolanta and Mazeppa come in at a very distant third. For years I have gone along with the received wisdom that Pique Dame is demonstrably inferior to Eugene Onegin but better acquaintance with Pique Dame has led me to the conclusion that the gap between the two is less than I thought. The fact that it is a grim, sombre tale has not helped its advancement; it hardly makes for a jolly night at the opera. Its action is to some degree realistic but also melodramatic, in that both main characters descend into madness and commit suicide; it is also dependent upon two respectively far-fetched and supernatural elements: the supposed existence of a secret gambling formula and the apparition of the Countess’ ghost to Hermann. As Chekalinsky sceptically remarks, “Se non è vero, è ben trovato!” and those devices propel events entertainingly. The opera is primarily a study in the pernicious effects of greed and obsession and in that regard Hermann is in the same mould as other suicidal or destructive operatic (anti-)heroes, such as Werther, Otello and Heinrich in Tannhäuser. Arguably responsible for the deaths of both Lisa and her elderly guardian grandmother, the Countess, he is certainly unattractive as a personality, yet Tchaikovsky identified closely with him as an outsider and invested heavily in his depiction, giving the music great intensity and completing the whole opera in 44 days.

  • Alfa-Bank Social Report 2005
In line with its social policy concept, in 2005 the Bank focused in particular on cooperation with the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF). Alfa-Bank is a proud member of the Foundation's Corporate Club and was one of the first Russian banks to provide financial support to WWF programs. The World Wildlife Foundation is one of the world's largest non-governmental charitable organizations, with a history that goes back over 40 years. Every year the WWF implements more than 1,200 environmental projects, alerting millions of people worldwide to environmental issues. The WWF's mission is to prevent environmental degradation, and its main goal is to preserve biodiversity. The Foundation's priorities include the preservation of ecological regions and the protection of rare animal and plant species. The Foundation receives more than 50 percent of its funding from corporate and individual donors. WWF Russia has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. Over many years of activity in line with its approved, comprehensive environmental strategy, the Foundation has launched forest, marine and climate programs, and is continuing to focus on preserving rare animal and plant species, establishing and supporting specially protected natural areas, and developing environmental legislation. In Russia, 16 eco-regions have been identified, and it is these on which the Foundation is concentrating its efforts. More than 3,000 experts are involved in WWF Russia's projects today. The challenges facing the Foundation cannot be addressed unless governments, corporations and individuals pool their efforts. Global problems must be tackled at all levels - global, national, regional and individual. There is a pressing need to change attitudes to the environment and to start thinking environmentally.
