Alfred Austin - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Alfred Austin - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Alfred Austin(30 May 1835 – 2 June 1913) A writer who wore several hats throughout his career, Alfred Austin was a critic, novelist and political journalist. Although he was educated in law, his professional life focused primarily on literature. Austin published regularly for half a century and succeeded Alfred, Lord Tennyson as poet laureate of England in 1896. Nonetheless, he carries the reputation of having been the worst and least read English poet. Austin was born on May 30, 1835, in Headingley, near Leeds, to Roman Catholic parents Joseph and Mary Austin. His father was a merchant and a magistrate of Headingley and his mother was the sister of Joseph Locke, a member of Parliament and a civil engineer. He was schooled first at Stoneyhurst College and then St. Mary's College, Oscott. He received a B.A. in 1853 from the University of London. Called to the Bar of the Inner Temple in 1857, he became a barrister on the Northern Circuit at his parents urging but left the legal world within three years in pursuit of a career in literature. This decision came upon the heels of his father's death in 1861 and his newfound financial freedom with the assumption of an inheritance. In 1855, he published Randolph: A Poem in Two Cantos, and three years later he published a novel, entitled Five Years of It. From 1866 to 1896, he worked as a foreign affairs writer for the London Standard, where he was known as a conservative journalist. -
Evidence from Hamburg's Import Trade, Eightee
Economic History Working Papers No: 266/2017 Great divergence, consumer revolution and the reorganization of textile markets: Evidence from Hamburg’s import trade, eighteenth century Ulrich Pfister Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster Economic History Department, London School of Economics and Political Science, Houghton Street, London, WC2A 2AE, London, UK. F: +44 (0) 20 7955 7730 LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC HISTORY WORKING PAPERS NO. 266 – AUGUST 2017 Great divergence, consumer revolution and the reorganization of textile markets: Evidence from Hamburg’s import trade, eighteenth century Ulrich Pfister Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster Email: [email protected] Abstract The study combines information on some 180,000 import declarations for 36 years in 1733–1798 with published prices for forty-odd commodities to produce aggregate and commodity specific estimates of import quantities in Hamburg’s overseas trade. In order to explain the trajectory of imports of specific commodities estimates of simple import demand functions are carried out. Since Hamburg constituted the principal German sea port already at that time, information on its imports can be used to derive tentative statements on the aggregate evolution of Germany’s foreign trade. The main results are as follows: Import quantities grew at an average rate of at least 0.7 per cent between 1736 and 1794, which is a bit faster than the increase of population and GDP, implying an increase in openness. Relative import prices did not fall, which suggests that innovations in transport technology and improvement of business practices played no role in overseas trade growth. -
Isaak Babel," Anonymous, "He Died for Art," Nesweek (July 27, 1964)
European Writers: The Twentieth Century. Ed. George Stade. Vol. 11. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1983. Pp. 1885-1914. Babel's extant output: movie scripts, early short Isaac Babel fiction, journalistic sketches, one translation, and a few later stories that remained unpublished in Babel's lifetime (they were considered offensive either to the (1894 – 1940) party line or the censor's sense of public delicacy). His most famous work, the cycle of short stories Gregory Freidin and vignettes, Konarmiia (Red Cavalry), was first published in a separate edition in 1926. It dealt with the experiences of the Russo-Polish War of 1920 as (A version of this essay in Critical Biography was seen through the bespectacled eyes of a Russian published in European Writer of the Twentieth Jewish intellectual working, as Babel himself had Century [NY: Scribners, 1990]) done, for the newspaper of the red Cossack army. This autobiographical aura played a key rôle in the success and popularity of the cycle. The thirty three jewel-like pieces, strung together to form the first Isaac Babel (1894-1940) was, perhaps, the first edition of Red Cavalry, were composed in a short Soviet prose writer to achieve a truly stellar stature in period of time, between the summer of 1923 and the Russia, to enjoy a wide-ranging international beginning of 1925, and together constitute Babel's reputation as a grand master of the short story,1 and lengthiest work of fiction (two more pieces would be to continue to influence—directly through his own added subsequently). They also represent his most work as well as through criticism and scholarship— innovative and daring technical accomplishment. -

Venkov Independent Researcher, Russian Federation 36, 36th Lane, Rostov-on-Don, 344025 PhD (History) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The article discusses the causes and forms of youth protest in the US and some European countries in the second half of the 1960s. The extent of its influence on the emergence of nonconformist youth subculture in the Soviet Union in the late 1960s – 1970s is revealed, and the general features of various youth subcultures of the Soviet Union and abroad are analyzed. Keywords: 1968, hippie youth protest, hitchhiking, nonconformity, rock music, Soviet youth, system.
