Introduction

Every day hundreds of millions of people listen to radio, driving their cars. Music, news, programs and advertising are delivered in single information flows to listeners. Today the radio air brodcast is gradually replaced by the Internet streaming, and the place of customary radiostations and TV sets is more often taken by desktops, tablet PCs and smartphones with various entertainment apps in them. Streaming is an explosive growth area. For the last year, according to certain expert estimates, the audience of streaming Internet services and apps increased by 50%. In 2015 its double and even higher growth is expected. Since 2006 Swedish has raised the capital up to $0.5 billion, and today the quantity of its active users is 40 millions of people. American PANDORA’s capitalization is $5 billion, the number of subscribers is 200 millions with 80 millions active. But a true explosion will take place within the next 4-5 years, when hundreds of millions of new users, listeners and viewers will get into the new cars with onboard multimedia Internet systems. Who will entertain them and how will they do that? Who will monetize this audience and how will it be going? Today there are no ready answers to all these questions. But the only evident fact is that investments won’t be enough. Brand-new ideas will be needed at most. The economic and political crisis, came on and the cross-border regions, causes dramatic changes in all the life spheres. It directly affects the media business as well as the entertainment industry. But any kind of crisis means changes, losses and new opportunities at the same time. Preparing the present report, we pursued several objectives: firstly, to analyze important data and facts, which defined the industry of the last year; secondly, to show the core trends and depict the future of media and record business. But the only main goal is to help tophit.ru partners – stations, TV- channels, record labels, producers, DJs, authors and artists – clearly realize what is actually going on and what they should do not to drop out but develop and move forward in the business successfully. Hence the very tophit.ru annual report consists of three parts. The first one, 2014: RADIO STARS AND RADIO HITS, embraces the brodcast statistics of the radiostations, tophit.ru partners in Russia, Moscow, , Kiev and the CIS countries. We analyze the chart stories of tens of top local and foreign artists, compare the radio air ratios with the last year ones and bring to light the most successful on radio air record business players. Besides, we’ll show what part of the Moscow radio air was taken by artists and their the local and foreign repertoire. We’ll also demonstrate the annual TOP 20 Songs of Moscow brodcasters, which formed the Moscow and federal music radio air. The second part of the report is titled 2015: RADIO AND LABELS ARE IN ZONE OF RISK. Here we speak of some significant events, which took place in record business, media and the Internet; define the core trends and give certain recommendations, which will help our partners not drop out of the business under the crisis and cardinal market changes but keep on moving forward successfully. Within the last decades the ordinary radio managed to hold the millions of listeners by a surprisingly small volume of music content, having a strong promotion instrument. It resulted in loyalty of rightholders, low expenses for music content and high margins. But today on radio very few realize how to fit their huge media assets into the forthcoming Internet future, convert the radio audience into tens of millions of their devoted Internet users and, finally, start earning on the web. On the other hand, the major rightholders, whose main business is monetization of the collected Cyclopic music catalogues, are aware that the Internet-broadcasters have not such a huge audience as the radio do, but they may have budgets. Hence now the rightholders conduct a zero tolerance policy with the Internet media – “pay on the spot, and we’ll get promoted via radio rotation”. But. As soon as the mass audience shifts to the Internet, the streaming services will acquire new instruments of promotion and monetization, and as soon as there are more stories of successful promotion of beginning artists and their hits on the web, the majors will have to elaborate more loyal collaboration policy in attitude to the Internet streaming services… In the third part of tophit.ru annual report, titled 2015: NEW MEDIA AND NEW STARS, we’ll analyze the work results of the streaming services in 2014. We’ll also explain why the new media is a splendid opportunity for the beginning artists to reach out a huge audience. And we’ll also show how the mass support of new talented artists plays a crucial part in gripping the mass audience by the streaming services. The founders and managers of streaming services create multiple scripts and modern designs and develop new algorithms of content offers. But. They do not tap a 60-year-experience of music radio broadcast. They just don’t know anything about it. The new media has no effective mechanisms of song promotion. As a result, for them it leads to the rightholders’ distrust, considerable expenses for acquiring rights for huge music catalogues, an ill fame of “the cash cows”, on the point of view of music majors, and the necessity of constant refunding, shifts of pay-back terms and, finally, project closures… But all that are just growing pains… The years of 2013-2014 gave a start to the future, we are approaching very fast, and where the Internet services will meet the music demands of the mass audience as well as become the main instrument in promotion of new artists and their new hits. The general title of all the report parts is “Annual report on the most significant events of 2014 radio year and the core trends in development of the streaming broadcast and music industry in 2015”. And the replace of ‘the radio broadcast’ by ‘the streaming’ is also a tendency and a kind of a sign. However, all the trends will be touched in the next parts of the report, and right now…

Radio Stars and Radio Hits

On 5 January, 2015 tophit.ru published 16 annual radio charts, including 4 main: Yearly General Top Hit 200, Yearly Russian Top Hit 200, Yearly General Artist Top 100 and Yearly Russian Artist Top 100. Elka and , a couple of leaders of tophit.ru radio charts since 2011, consolidated their status quo last year and shared the 1st and the 2nd places again with a standard million of spins each. Along with the girlsband they became the most frequently requested artists on the radio air. , who left the ladies behind in the year of 2013, yielded to them this time and took the 3rd place with 756.000 spins. It’s noteworthy that Burito (aka Igor Burnyshev, a composer and ex-member of the band Band’Eros) helped Elka much in taking the lead. The song “Ty Znaesh”, the co-author and co-performer of which is Burito (with Elka in refrains), became a true megahit, having played a bit less than 600.000 times on the radio air of 2014. Whereas purely Elka’s composition, “Narisuy Mnye Nebo”, played just a little more than 300.000 times within the year, having taken the modest 19th place on Top 100 Russian Songs. Once again Alyona Mikhailova and her company Velvet Music demonstrated a high quality of the music content released as well as rare marketing skills. With one stone (Burito feat. Elka) they didn’t kill but enlivened three “birds” at once: Mr. Burnyshev as a composer and solo artist; Elka as the most frequently rotated on radio singer; and, finally, the hit “Ty Znaesh” that played just everywhere around. However, we’ll get back to the unique skills of Alyona Mikhailova & Co. several more times. We’d like to underline that 2015 will become crucial for Elka and Nyusha in relation to holding their positions on air. The experience of the last 15-20 years shows that the artist can be in the lead on radio charts within 3-4 years only. For this time their toothy colleagues-beginners grow up; the listeners along with the music editors of stations get sick and tired of their recent idols, and the change of leaders takes place. The shining examples are Ruki Vverkh!, Diskoteka Avaria and unforgettable Katya Lel, who exploded the radio air thanks to in the beginning of the 00s, and with MakSim, who were in the lead in the period of 2005-2009. Within the next two months we’ll get to know, whether two fragile ladies Nyusha and Elka manages to hold their positions on the top of radio charts in 2015. As for the last year TOP 10, there’s the only surprise – the couple Burito feat. Elka mentioned above, as no remarkable works, performed by Mr. Burnyshev solo, were heard on air… Meanwhile, the good old names entered TOP 10 as well: risen from the ashes VIA Gra (4th place, 2 songs, 715.000 spins), unfailing and always competent Vintage (5th place, 3 songs, 706.000 spins), Vera Brezhneva (6th place, 3 songs, 662.000 spins), above mentioned Serebro (7th place, 3 songs, 648.000 spins), Dmitry Koldun (8th place, 3 songs, 640.000 spins). , who in 2014 had, unfortunately, to solve not only stage career issues but also the organizational and political ones, made herself snug on the 9th place. Once again we pay special attention to the notable role of Alyona Mikhailova and her company Velvet Music: in 2014 four (!) positions at once were taken by Velvet artists on TOP 10 Russian Artists – Elka (collaboration with Burito inclusively), VIA Gra and Vera Brezhneva. In tote, within 2014 these artists got a phenomenal general quantity of spins on radio air – 2.370.000! But let us get back to the last year leaders. As for the last year but one music beginners, breakthrough was reached by two absolutely different artists – Emin () and Sergey Kurenkov, who works in chanson genre. Emin with his 450.000 spins took the 16th place, having gone 63 positions up on charts, and Mr. Kurenkov took the 27th place of TOP 100 Russian Artists chart, having been played 360.500 times on radio air and gone 60 positions up. But one should keep a wary eye on the artists, who simply rushed into Top 100 Russian Artists chart for the first time ever: band Maugli (35th place, 2 songs, 244.000 spins), band Myakovsky (43rd place, 3 songs, 222.000 spins), Egor Krid (49th place, 3 songs, 197.000 spins) and Iowa (55th place, 3 songs, 181.000 spins). Some of them might soon replace the present leaders of tophit.ru radio charts. The year of 2014 was success for Julia Savicheva (34 positions up, 12th place on TOP 100 Russian Artists, 574.000 spins), (37 positions up, 15th place, 500.000 spins), band Band’Eros (22 positions up, 25th place, almost 400.000 spins). The artists of adult contemporary and chanson genres, among which are Sergey Kurenkov (59 positions up, 28th place, 360.000 spins) and Mikhail Bublik (36 pistion sup, 35th place, 256.000 spins) approved themselves in 2014 as well. 2014 was less successful for Gradusy (25 positions down, 29th place, 372.000 spins), Denis Maidanov (20 positions down, 31st place, 311.000 spins), Slava (24 positions down, 41st place, 231.000 spins), Eva Polna (48 positions down, 50th place, 197.000 spins), A’Studio (37 positions down, 52nd place, 185.000 spins), Kristina Orbakaite (38 positions down, 54th place, 181.000 spins), Elena Vaenga (30 positions down, 67th place, 124.000 spins), Ukrainian pop-artists Irina Bilyk (35 positions down, 77th place, under 100.000 spins) and band neAngely (29 positions down, 82nd place). And, finally, Diskoteka Avaria and MakSim managed to enter only the last ten of TOP 100 Russian Artists chart of 2014. So, the music year results of the Russian artists and their repertoire were analyzed above. Further on we’ll present absolute leaders of tophit.ru radio charts, including Russian and foreign artists at once with their hits. It remains to add that the Russian artists and their hits, presented on the list below, including the song authors, have every chance to participate in the ceremony Top Hit Music Awards 2015, where they’ll be awarded for outstanding achievements on the radio air 2014…

Achievements of record lables in 2014

The year of 2014 appeared the time of dramatic changes for the Russian music market, which seriously influenced the line-up of artists and their hits in the annual “table of ranks”. If speak of the foreign repertoire, sharing the music catalogues between Universal Music and Warner in favor of the latter one played a crucial role. It resulted in the change of the longstanding leader of the record-label charts on tophit.ru – it was Warner radio catalogue that got over 6.000.000 spins on the radio air of 2014! The company has also created an absolute record in relation to the quanity of hits, which entered Top Hit 100 Weekly once at least. There were 46 such hits or 28% of Warner’s 166 songs on the Russian stations. In general, carrying out the obligations before the authors, artists and producers on promoting their music content on e-media platforms, more or less prominent Russian record-labels as well as the representatives of the majors in the RF territory, collaborated closely with tophit.ru in 2014. Unlike all the previous years, within 2014 the companies picked new music material for testing and publication on tophit.ru and, consequently, for radio air much more accurately. Meanwhile, the three majors (Warner, Universal, Sony) demonstrated almost equally good results. As for the local repertoire on radio air, besides tophit.ru, two more companies influenced the situation. These companies demonstrated two cardinally different approaches to the work with music material for radio. If speak of quantity, the lead was taken by First Music Publishing (PMI) that absorbed 101 songs within the year and placed them on air. Such a dense content traffic, according to experts, had to help PMI and its affiliated structures maintain the status of the local market leader in relation to the catalogue volume, owned by the company, as well as the promotion of songs to radio. On the other hand, an exclusively high quality of work with music material for radio air, marketing and promotion were shown by Alyona Mikhailova’s producer’s company Velvet Music. 29 hits played almost 4 million times on air within the year! Besides, over a half of the songs entered Top Hit 100 charts. And the high testing results of almost all Velvet Music songs prove that it was not just a pure luck but a hard professional work. To make the difference between the approaches and results of these two companies more vivid, there are figures in relation to the Russian repertoire on the radio air in the table below:

The consolidated data on the companies, radio air leaders, of the local market in Russia and the CIS countries, is presented in the tables below. There's the only nomination, purely technical, out of 5 ones, according to which the annual results 2014 are presented. It shows the total number of each company’ singles, distributed to radiostations via tophit.ru. Under the limited-radio-air-time conditions the quality but not the volume of the music content comes to the fore. It’s also noteworthy that the below-presented ratings exclude small single-brand companies and producer centers with the annual releases of singles less than 10.

Tophit.ru project was launched in 2003. By now it has become the main connecting bridge between 1500 Russian and foreign artists, producers, record-labels, on the one hand, and 415 radiostations, 110 TV-channels and 300 leading DJs of Moscow, Russia, Ukraine, the CIS countries and the Baltic States, , Cyprus, and the US, on the other. tophit.ru deals with distribution of new high quality audio- and video-content to radiostations, TV-channels and DJ’s as well as collection of statistical data on rotation of music content on air. In 2014 the project was cardinally redesigned, and in January 2015 Top Hit 3.0 was presented to the partners. New tophit.ru set new standards of music marketing; interaction between artists and producers, on the one hand, and the social network services, on the other; and promotion of the partners’ content on the web. Today tophit.ru is a content database that includes over 22.000 hits, 3000 videos of high quality; 830 liners, ID’s and congratulations, recorded by 190 Russian and foreign stars. This content is available to tophit.ru media partners 24/7. tophit.ru is a weekly detailed statistical data on the rotation of over 400 popular radio hits on the air of the radiostations-partners; seven weekly and monthly radio charts online, including separate charts of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev; audience request charts and consolidated TOP HIT 100; 16 annual charts, including consolidated TOP HIT 200 and Yearly Artists TOP 100. In addition to existing radio charts, new streaming charts, which will reflect the taste of the mas Internet audience, will be launched on tophit.ru in 2015. Since 2005 the official radio charts Airplay Top Hit 100 have been recognized as the most complete and reliable source of information about the situation on radio air in Russia and the CIS countries as well as an impartial indicator of popularity of one or another Russian or foreign artist on the music market. tophit.ru is a weekly Top Hit Chart, presented by the brightest -stage stars, on air of 50 stations, tophit.ru partners. About the author

Igor Kraev was born in Sochi, lived and worked in Sevastopol till 2000. In the latter city he went into higher education. Since 1996 Igor worked at the Crimean Radio Roks and regional Russkoye Radio as a presenter and program producer and then became a program director. Since the year of 2000 he was initially a manager and then PR-director in the company ARS- Records in Moscow. In 2003 Igor left ARS and along with Vadim Botnaryuk founded tophit.ru project, headed by Igor at present. Since 2010 he's been developing new interface, marketing and content approaches in the frames of streaming Internet services. In the beginning of 2014 Igor Kraev started collaborating with clipyou.ru and launched the MATRIX – a pilot version of the streaming Internet project, presenting the pool of several tens of music interactive streaming Internet channels, organized by means of a format-time-relying matrix.
