2 Penpol Painting Preserved Some eight years ago Mervyn Sullivan painted directly onto a large board which depicted the men and their achievements that had made Hayle one of the foremost places in the world and which started the Industrial Revolution, which is not so widely known. This informative painting has been much admired by both local people and visitors, unfortunately over the years the weather had taken its toll on the paint and the board and it was looking a little the worse for wear. Luckily Mervyn had taken a photo, and thanks to Attic Design and Print it has now been reproduced using advanced techniques ensuring it will stay in pristine condition for the next ten years and is to be judged as part published, the ‘In Your of the Hayle in Bloom “In Your Neighbourhood’ competititon will Neighbourhood Competition”. have been judged (July 17th – 24th) Supported by the Town Council, and the main Champion of thanks must go to Tom Rimmer of Champions competition will also Attic Design & Print, Bob Penrose have been judged on Thursday 26th for installing it, Mervyn himself and July. others for getting it organised. A Retrospective Art Exhibition New works by Linda King.

I have been living and working in for 26 years, but am probably better known for my small archaeology book ‘no stone unturned’. In August I will be holding a retrospective exhibition with new works at St. Elwyn’s Church, Hayle (opposite the Jubilee Bridge). This year I reached 60 and thought it a good opportunity to look back over my art and showcase some new pieces. Having limited time in my 8 life to create I always move between disciplines: painting, drawing, metalsmithing, photography, portraiture, ceramics, figure drawing, mural painting, lamp-working, glass sculpture, collage, video, jewellery — because there isn’t time not to. The thought of being stuck in one stratum absolutely abhors me. And why does art have to be so serious? Can’t artists admit they love the ability to conjure up something ‘Extant’ also sees the launch of a never before seen on the planet? My new book from myself entitled ‘ A favourite method at present is to use Business of Ferrets: The first 100 party poppers to explode paint onto a days of Nine Ferret Kits’ It might not surface. I know I am a jack of all trades. Every few years I have a massive burn up of all the accumulated work I am dissatisfied with, or feel I have moved beyond, but I always keep back the best. The ash doesn’t go to waste because I mix it into acrylic paint for the creation of new pieces. A new idea is the ‘4-Way Hanging’. No details will be revealed here, but it increases a painting’s potential. None of my paintings is sold framed. The first exhibit is the catalogue itself. Hand-made, with several pages like a retro-style scrapbook. The first 100 copies (numbered and signed) have a piece of on original painting pocketed inside. Council Corner August & September 2018 New Councillor In May Councillor David Andrewartha joined the council, representing North Ward. We welcome David to the team; who is already very active and bringing new issues to the table. His and all councillors’ contact details are listed on page 44 in this edition of the Hayle Pump and on the council’s website page. Hayle War Memorial Project Unfortunately the project start date has been delayed and will now commence in September. All of the work will be completed prior to the centenary which marks the end of the First World War. is now proposing to enhance the wider area, including the parking area in front of Hayle Terrace, and it is hoped that this project will also be completed by October 2018. 10 Walk the Walk – Mayor’s Sponsored Walk The Mayor’s sponsored walk will take place on Sunday 9 September 2018 with a choice of a two or five mile route, so please keep a lookout for further information in the press and on the Council’s notice boards. Sponsorship and registration forms are available from the town council office and St Julia’s Fundraising Office. The money raised will be donated to Cornwall Hospice Care. We will also require help on the day so if you feel you could spare an afternoon to volunteer as a marshal please get in touch. Hayle Civic Service and Parade This year’s event will take place on 7 October 2018 and as usual the Parade will meet and form in the Commercial Road Car Park from 2.30pm. Guests are invited to park in the car park and the Parade will process, led by Hayle Town Band, to St Elwyn’s Church for the Civic Service, which starts at 3pm. Following the service the parade will return to the Day Care Centre for refreshments. Consultation: Former Hawkins Motors Site – Hayle Terrace It is anticipated that this site will be formally transferred to the town council later in the year, in accordance with the Section 106 agreement that was put in place when the planning permission for the development of the houses was originally passed. The developers of 11 the site are also obliged to give the Town Council the sum of £30,000 for the purpose of enhancing the immediate area. The council wishes to consult with the local community and asks you to submit your ideas for what you would like to see at that spot. Given its proximity to the main road no consideration will be given to suggestions of a play area but all other proposals are welcome. Please submit your written or drawn suggestions to the council to the council by the end of October 2018. Plastic Free Hayle

The town council recently resolved to support the campaign for Hayle to become a plastic free town and will actively reduce its use of single use plastic. It will work with Surfers Against Sewage to promote the initiative and encourages every individual, household and business in the area to reduce its use of single use plastic.

Millpond Update I wish I could make sense of the peculiarities of the British Weather!

12 After the “Beast from the East” we have now been blessed with a month’s worth of tropical sunshine which our turtles have spent their time avoiding. They have only been coming out of the shade early in the morning or in the cool of the evening because it was too warm for them to bask normally. With the passing of midsummer our drakes have started to return to the Millponds as the breeding season ended. Our fifteen residents have now become over sixty as the boys come home to moult and prepare for next spring. Our ducklings have all survived and have now been joined by four more which were hatched on the river and three moorhen chicks. Our reduced seagull population has certainly helped. We only have less than a dozen visiting us regularly and only one breeding pair. The Upper Swan Pool is still very clean. The water lilies are now in bloom and look quite spectacular. The dragonflies are still with us and our larger Carp and Black Tench are

The Anti-Plastic campaign seems to Georgina Schofield still be progressing very well Volunteer Wildlife Warden because the schools are carrying out There is always something to see at their own schemes to reduce their the RSPB Copperhouse Pool. It might be the swans doing early morning flights in huge circles overhead, their wings whistling as they go. Or pure white egrets paddling in the shallows. Or a noisy mob of dozens of gulls taking exception to a stately heron passing through their territory. And one morning, a roe deer, running and leaping through the tidal pools, from Jubilee Bridge to Black Bridge and beyond. That was a truly exciting Nature Watch! Last time I mentioned the shelducks, and several weeks later I heard that they had indeed been nesting, not in the Pool, but on the Towans. Mama Shelduck brought her family of ten to the pool by the shortest route, i.e. through a Glebe Row resident’s garden, from which they could not get out. Eventually, the kindly home 14 owner allowed them to exit via his house. I hope they thrived. The nine mallard duckling on the Hayle River were cute as buttons, too. A Pacific golden plover was seen on the estuary in June and July, only the 5th recorded sighting of this species in Cornwall. Many birds are now returning to the estuary. Recent sightings include black-tailed godwits, common sandpipers, dunlins, shelducks, little egret, whimbrels, greenshanks, barnacle goose, grey plover, wood sandpiper, Mediterranean gulls and curlews. Harret from RSPB in Penzance will be visiting Hayle in August/ September, meeting the locals and giving them the opportunity to help shape community work RSPB are planning. She will be on the lookout for volunteers to help, particularly a Volunteer Co-ordinator, and people to help with her surveys. RSPB will have a presence at upcoming events – Hayle Harbour Fest, Hayle Carnival, and family Fun Days at Lands End and . They will be promoting Wild Challenge, a great way to learn more about nature. Visit the website https// www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/ for-families/family-wild-challenge/

Hayle Twinning

Our trip to our twinned town of PORDIC in BRITTANY is getting nearer. We depart from HAYLE on Friday 24th August early in the morning, and return again on Tuesday 28th. This will be the 21st year that members from HAYLE have made this journey, that means probably nearly a thousand people from our twinning have completed the crossing to Roscoff and then onto PORDIC which also means that we have hosted that many BRETONS as well. It is 22 years since Charlie Allen and I first visited PORDIC and it’s beyond my wildest dreams that it is still going. We meet on the second Monday of each month at ASDA meeting room, 7-0pm for a 7-15 start. Throughout the year we raise funds so when our visitors arrive we can take them out and arrange a meal and music for their enjoyment.

17 something that is good and a little different culture-wise then look us up or just attend one of our meetings and see what you think, Or you can call me Maurice Trathen 01736 753341.

Sadly, through our lives some people suffer from terminal illnesses, such as cancer, and need the special care of St Julia’s Hospice. Many of us have also been affected having friends and family who received this care. When people talk of the many jewels of Hayle they often recall St. Julia’s Hospice and St Michaels Hospital. I ask that the people of Hayle join me in the Mayor’s walk, get sponsored and raise much needed funds for this charity, come along and enjoy our town.”

Our tentative schedule (still to be confirmed) is as follows  Saturday 8 Sept: PHANTOM THREAD, a bizarre masterpiece about love, loneliness and creative genius, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Lesley Manville.  Thursday 20 Sept: LOVELESS, the latest drama directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev (in Russian, with English subtitles).  Saturday 13 Oct: THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY, a gentle WWII love story.  Thursday 25 Oct: SPITFIRE plus BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY, a special double-bill documentary screening. 28  ON CHESIL BEACH, the film adaptation of Ian McEwan's novella, starring Saoirse Ronan.  Thursday 22 Nov: THE RIDER, a new American cowboy drama in pre-release. All screenings take place upstairs at the Passmore Edwards Institute and begin promptly at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 per person (£4 for members membership is just £7.50 per year). Book by phone (01736 600736) or online at www.haylefilmclub.org.uk. Free refreshments follow Saturday screenings. Tickets on the door subject to availability. All are welcome. Letters to the Editor Where is pretty polly? For several years, an African Grey Parrot survived the vagaries of the English weather, and many arguments with rooks, crows, and jackdaws. Then suddenly, he was gone. His cheeky chatter and musical whistles, and his vivid orange underwings as he flew above the Hayle rooftops, brightened up my days. 32 I wonder if any of your readers knows what happened to him? I miss him (or her) because I admired the bird’s spunk, surviving for a long time in an alien (to him!) environment. I would be glad to hear from anyone who knows. But it's not just farming we centre on. We take glorious walks that are relaxing and stimulating. We try new experiences like visiting the lovely swimming pool at Penzance. We have picnics in the evening at Trellisick. We also plan visits to the theatre, cinema, art galleries, enjoy dining out, go dancing and attend music events of all types.
