Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Guide to Users Background What is the summary for and where does it come from? This summary has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. It highlights important elements of the biodiversity of the region in two ways: • Listing species which may be significant for management because they are found only in the region, mainly in the region, or they have a conservation status such as endangered or vulnerable. • Comparing the region to other parts of Australia in terms of the composition and distribution of its species, to suggest components of its biodiversity which may be nationally significant. The summary was produced using the Australian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. The list of families covered in ANHAT is shown in Appendix 1. It was one of the first botanic gardens in the world AUSTRALIAN to adopt the study and display of a NATIONAL Canberra nation’s native species as a principal goal. BOTANIC CBD GARDENS Approximately one-third of the known flowering plant species that occur in Australia and about half the known Lake Burley Griffin eucalypt species are represented in its living collection. The ANBG is a national showcase for the horticultural use of Australia’s native plants. The ANBG contributes to meeting Australia’s obligations under international environment conventions to which Australia is a signatory. З’ясування цих питань є теоретичним підґрунтям для інтер- претації результатів експериментальних досліджень тропічних орхідних за умов оранжерейної культури з метою збереження ex situ. Ключові слова: Orchidaceae, екологічна спеціалізація, епіфітизм, життєві стратегії, адаптація, екологічна ніша. ВСТУП Родина Orchidaceae, яка налічує близько 25 тисяч видів [29], об’єднаних у п’ять під родин [65], є однією з найчисленніших серед квіткових рослин. Надзвичайно складний і тривалий життєвий цикл орхідей, включаючи їхню вза- ємодію з грибами-мікоризоутворювачами і високоспеціалізованими запилювачами, робить їх дуже вразливими до змін клімату і наслідків діяльності людини [10, 11]. Розуміння складного характеру цієї взаємодії є надзвичайно суттєвим для ор- ганізації системи природоохоронних заходів, включаючи проекти з інтродукції та реінтродукції [34, 77]. Метою цієї статті є аналіз публікацій, присвячених екологічним особливостям орхідних, передусім тропічних представників родини Orchidaceae, які відзначають- ся значно ширшим спектром життєвих стратегій порівняно з видами помірних ши- рот, а отже, і значно сильніше потерпають від глобальної деградації вологих тро- пічних лісів, що є первинними місцями зростання орхідних. -

The Centre incorporates the native plant research activities and the combined herbaria of CSIRO Plant Industry and the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The formation of the Centre created major opportunities for bringing together the databases and networks of the ANBG and CSIRO and for providing a seamless view of the Centre’s and the Commonwealth’s botanical information. The arrangement has been formalised through the signing of an Agreement between the two parties. 7Th International Orchid Conservation Congress
7TH INTERNATIONAL ORCHID CONSERVATION CONGRESS Jodrell Laboratory Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 28 May – 1 June 2019 Welcome to Kew! The International Orchid Conservation Congress (IOCC) series started in Western Australia in 2001, and subsequent meetings were held in Florida, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, La Réunion and Hong Kong. At the meeting in Hong Kong, it was decided that IOCCVII should be held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The title for IOCCVII is “Orchid Conservation: the Next Generation”, and we hope that the focus will be on the importance of involving the next generation of orchid conservation biologists and on the use of next-generation techniques. We are delighted to welcome more than 150 delegates from around the world to share their experiences of orchid conservation with each other. Orchids are among the most highly threatened groups of plants, with threats to orchids including habitat destruction, legal and illegal trade and climate change. As a result, our mission to conserve orchids is of increasing importance – if we don’t act, then we may be the last generation to see some groups of orchids, notably slipper orchids, in the wild. We are grateful to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for the use of the venue and for logistical support. The Lennox Boyd Trust, the Linnean Society of London and Orchid Conservation International and friends and family of the late Amy Morris provided financial support which has allowed us to provide bursaries for orchid specialists from Developing Countries so that they can attend the congress. We have an exciting and busy programme – with many talks and posters and other events including a demonstration of orchid propagation, a “World Café” session on conservation planning (arranged with the Conservation Planning Specialist Group) and a meeting of the Orchid Specialist Group. -

Orchids show a wide diversity of epiphytic and terrestrial growth forms and have successfully colonized almost every habitat on earth. -

Species of City-wide Significance for Conservation (2016 Update) Final Report June 2016 CITY OF GOLD COAST Speciesecology of City-wide Significance/ vegetation for Conservation / wildlife (2016 Update) / aquatic ecologyecosure / GIS.com.au | i Executive summary The City of Gold Coast engaged Ecosure Pty Ltd to undertake a review of the 2012 species of city-wide significance for conservation list and develop a decision-framework for prioritising species for future conservation management actions. Through a review of the existing criteria, updating the legislative status and scoring the base list of species for the Gold Coast local government area against the revised criteria, a draft list of city-wide significant species was established. An expert panel review of the draft species list resulted in a final city-wide significant species list containing 572 flora and 160 fauna species, from a base species list containing 1,952 vascular and legislatively significant non-vascular flora and 609 vertebrate and legislatively significant invertebrate fauna species. This species list will be used by the City to create a priority species list as part of a priority species management program. Part of the scope of this present project has been to review various frameworks to assess priorities. After an in-depth literature review and consultative process, Ecosure recommended the Back on Track Phase II methods as a suitable decision- support framework for the City. Customisation of the Back on Track Phase II methods to suit the City’s requirements are summarised in Section 3.6 of this report. Section 4 provides recommendations which have arisen during the course of this project and include for example, the timeframe for future reviews of the city-wide significant species list and decision-support framework criteria, items for consideration in future reviews and suggestions for the subsequent application of the species list.
