    Handbook of Reference Works in Traditional Chinese Studies (R. Eno, 2011) 9. WESTERN SINOLOGY AND FIELD JOURNALS This section of has two parts. The first outlines some aspects of the history of sinology in the West relevant to the contemporary shape of the field. The second part surveys some of the leading and secondary sinological journals, with emphasis on the role they have played historically. I. An outline of sinological development in the West The history of sinology in the West is over 400 years old. No substantial survey will be attempted here; that can wait until publication of The Lives of the Great Sinologists, a blockbuster for sure.1 At present, with Chinese studies widely dispersed in hundreds of teaching institutions, the lines of the scholarly traditions that once marked sharply divergent approaches are not as easy to discern as they were thirty or forty years ago, but they still have important influences on the agendas of the field, and they should be understood in broad outline. One survey approach is offered by the general introduction to Zurndorfer’s guide; its emphasis is primarily on the development of modern Japanese and Chinese scholarly traditions, and it is well worth reading. This brief summary has somewhat different emphases. A. Sinology in Europe The French school Until the beginning of the eighteenth century, Western views of China were principally derived from information provided by occasional travelers and by missionaries, particularly the Jesuits, whose close ties with the Ming and Ch’ing courts are engagingly portrayed by Jonathan Spence in his popular portraits, The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci and Emperor of China.

    OBITUARY In Memoriam: Wolfram Eberhard, 1909-1989 A l v i n P. C o h e n University of Massachusetts, Amherst Wolfram Eberhard, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of California at Berkeley, was one of those rare scholars of Western, Cen­ tral, and Eastern Asian societies and cultures whose interests and abilities were so broad that he can justifiably be described as a genuine “ renais­ sance man ” of Asian studies. As a teacher and scholar, he directly or indirectly influenced the careers and lives of a generation of students and scholars in many parts of the world. Even after his retirement, he continued to actively teach and publish, as well as to inspire a new generation of students. The course of Professor Eberhard’s life and career reads almost like an adventure tale.1 He was born on March 1 7 ,1909，in Potsdam, Germany, into a family of astrophysicists and astronomers on both the paternal and maternal sides of his family. The family influence was to bear fruit in Eberhard’s doctoral dissertation on the astronomy and astrology of the Han Dynasty, and in several studies, coauthored with his uncle Rolf Muller, on the astronomy of the Han and Three Kingdom periods. These works were reprinted as volume 4 of EberharcTs col­ lected essays, Sternkunde und Weltbild im alien China (1970a). Eber­ hard was educated at the Victoria Gymnasium in Potsdam where he studied Latin, Greek, French, and two years of English. He had no other English instruction until 1948, when he arrived in the United States and was expected to start teaching in English within a few weeks.

    Ein Sinologe in der Türkei: Wolfram Eberhard (1909-1989) und seine Zeit in Ankara (1937-1948) Gerd Wädow Wolfram Eberhard, einer der international namhaften Sinologen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, war unter den deutschen Exilwissenschaftlern der einzige Vertreter seines Faches, der aus Deutschland nicht in das europäische Ausland, in die USA oder nach China ging, sondern in die Türkei.1 Leben und Werk des am 17. März 1909 in Potsdam geborenen und am 15. August 1989 in Berkeley verstorbenen Eberhard sind vielfach dokumentiert.2 Seine Bedeutung für die klassische Sino- logie und die Sozialwissenschaften, vor allem aber auch für die Erforschung chi- nesischer Märchen und Folklore, volkstümlicher Bräuche, Sitten und Literaturen (Folklore Studies) ist unbestritten. Eberhard verbrachte elf Jahre in der Türkei, wo er als Professor, Forscher und Autor an der am 14. Juni 1935 gegründeten „Fakultät für Sprache, Geschichte und Geographie“ (Dil Tarih Coùrafya Fakültesi) der späteren Universität Ankara (gegründet 1946)3 nahezu single-handedly das Curriculum der Sinologie abdeckte. Dort übertrug er die Themen seiner sinologi- schen Spezialgebiete auch auf den türkischen Kulturraum und verfaßte zahlrei- che Veröffentlichungen in türkischer Sprache. Er gilt heute als der Begründer der Sinologie in der Türkei. Studium Eberhard entstammte einer Familie von Astrophysikern und Astronomen – Großvater, Vater und Onkel waren vom Fach. Vol. 3, No. 6, 2015, pp. 293-298. doi: 10.11648/j.hss.20150306.12 Abstract: As once expressed by the German Sinologist Prof. Dr. Wolfram Eberhard, Sinology is a national discipline for the Turks simply because it is the Chinese sources that provide the most extensive and elaborative records on the ancient Turkish history and culture. Well then, do we, the Turkish sinologists, give due consideration to sinology researches, which function as in integral part of the Turkish history and culture? Sadly, answer to this question is most of the time not affirmative. Even though Wolfram Eberhard levelled up the Turkish sinology to an international scale during his office at Ankara University in 1937-1948, the methods initiated by him could not be resumed after his departure from Turkey, which in turn, resulted in stagnation of the discipline. The fact that sinology researches do not run complementary to one another, and failure to publish research results - which absolutely take great efforts, time and energy- and to make them available for and accessible to a large mass, discipline's failure to come up with long-lasting works that would pave the ground for further researches for the Turkish culture, that native sinologists cannot employ an extensive perspective to sinology researches, and either fail or are unwilling to establish principles with regards to scientific methods utilised to this end can be listed amongst the primary reasons for the aforecited stagnation.

MAIR Associate Editors PAULA ROBERTS MARK SWOFFORD ISSN 2157-9679 (print) 2157-9687 (online) SINO-PLATONIC PAPERS is an occasional series dedicated to making available to specialists and the interested public the results of research that, because of its unconventional or controversial nature, might otherwise go unpublished. The editor-in-chief actively encourages younger, not yet well established scholars and independent authors to submit manuscripts for consideration. Contributions in any of the major scholarly languages of the world, including romanized modern standard Mandarin and Japanese, are acceptable. In special circumstances, papers written in one of the Sinitic topolects (fangyan) may be considered for publication. Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. This series is not the place for safe, sober, and stodgy presentations. Sino-Platonic Papers prefers lively work that, while taking reasonable risks to advance the field, capitalizes on brilliant new insights into the development of civilization. Submissions are regularly sent out for peer review, and extensive editorial suggestions for revision may be offered. Sino-Platonic Papers emphasizes substance over form. We do, however, strongly recommend that prospective authors consult our style guidelines at www.sino-platonic.org/stylesheet.doc.
