(E: [email protected]; T: +44-1491-692254) 32 33 34 Abstract 35 36 Bhojtal, a large man-made lake bordering the city of Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh state, 37 central India), is important for the city’s water supply, connoted the lifeline of the city. 38 Despite the dry though not arid and markedly seasonal climate, soil impermeability 39 hampers infiltration into the complex geology underlying the Bhojtal catchment. 40 Rural communities in the catchment are nonetheless high dependent on underlying 41 aquifers. This paper develops baseline understanding of trends in the ecology, 42 water quality and uses of Bhojtal, discussing their implications for the long-term 43 wellbeing of the Bhopal city region. Despite some nature- 47 based management initiatives, evidence suggests little progress in haltering on- 48 going groundwater depression and declines in lake water level and quality. 49 Significant declines in ecosystem services produced by Bhojtal are likely without 50 intervention, a major concern given the high dependency of people in the Bhopal 51 region on Bhojtal for their water supply and socio-economic and cultural wellbeing. 52 Over-reliance on appropriation of water from increasingly remote sources is currently 53 compensating for lack of attention to measures protecting or regenerating local 54 resources that may provide greater resilience and regional self-sufficiency. 55 Improved knowledge of catchment hydrogeology on a highly localised scale could 56 improve the targeting and efficiency of water harvesting and other management 57 interventions in the Bhojtal catchment, and their appropriate hybridisation with 58 engineered solutions, protecting the catchment from unintended impacts of water 59 extraction or increasing its carrying capacity, and also providing resilience to rising 60 population and climate change. Introduction 88 Water has been a constant limiting factor for the development of India’s booming 89 population – 33 million at Independence in 1947, 1.37 billion in 2019 (a 42-fold 90 increase), and is still rising at 1.08% per annum (worldometers.info, 2019) – and 91 will remain so as part of the water-food-energy nexus subject to population, 92 globalisation, urbanisation and climate change trends. The vitality of pressurised 93 aquatic resources, both on the surface and underground, need to be increasingly 94 safeguarded through positive management as a primary resource supporting 95 continuing human wellbeing. 96 97 Madhya Pradesh state in central India is generally dry though not arid; mean annual 98 rainfall varies from 650 to 1400 mm across the state with 1260 mm for Bhopal 99 (CGWB, 2016). DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.138061. 100 pressures on locally available surface and groundwater resources across the state. 101 Bhopal, the state capital, is known as the ‘City of Lakes’ owing to the multitude of 102 natural and man-made lakes in the vicinity. 14 lakes in the city act as water 103 recharge units and, in conjunction with perennial river systems, formerly dense forest 104 cover and low relief, have created a unique urban microclimate (Burvey et al., 2017). 105 However, rapid urban expansion is eroding ecosystems surrounding the city. The 106 vegetative cover of Bhopal declined from 92% in 1977 to 21% in 2014, with further 107 predicted declines to 11% by 2018 and 4% by 2030 (Bharath Aithal, 2016). The 108 Kerwa Forest Area (KFA) located at 10 km from Bhopal faces severe anthropogenic 109 pressure compromising its critical roles as a carbon sink and source of water and 110 other contributions to environmental quality for the residents of Bhopal city (Dwivedi 111 et al., 2009). 112 113 Bhojtal, formerly known as Upper Lake or Bada Talab (‘Big Pond’), is the largest 114 local lake, abutting Bhopal city. Local folklore attributes the lake’s construction to 115 Paramara Raja Bhoj, king of Malwa from 1005 to 1055, when establishing the city of 116 Bhojpal to secure the eastern frontier of the kingdom. Bhojpal, named after the king, 117 was subsequently renamed Bhopal. The name of the lake was changed from Upper 118 Lake to Bhojtal in 2011 to honour its creator. Bhojtal was formed by constructing an 119 earthen dam across the Kolans River, which rises approximately 16 km from the 120 head of Bhojtal (Figure 1). Bhadbhada also 123 forms the western edge of the city of Bhopal (comprising both Old Bhopal and New 124 Bhopal). Van Vihar National Park borders Bhojtal to the South. This receives water as surface runoff only during monsoon period of each and every year. The upper lake has a catchment area of 375.55km2. The Land use Pattern of about 80% of the catchment is an agricultural area. Whereas 5% is of the forest and rest comes in urban area. Since the inset of monsoon in the catchment area is by 15th June in every year. The agricultural area starts contributing by the end of august. Whereas the lake start receiving surface runoff right from the beginning of monsoon season. Bhojtal Basin has a good surface hydro environment potential to reduce the water scarcity problem of the district.

Received 3 July, 2014; Accepted 22 July, 2014 Bhopal, the capital city of the state of Madhya Pradesh, India is famous for its numerous lakes. The Bhoj Wetland is a wetland of international importance (Ramsar Site). In the two years of study period, a total of 82 zooplankton species were recorded from February 2008-January 2010. Out of which 66 species were recorded in the 1st year (2008-2009), and 70 species documented during the 2nd year (2009-2010). The zooplankton population belongs to five major groups namely: Rotifera (46%), followed by Cladocera (34%), Protozoa (10%) and Copepoda and Ostracoda contributing 6 and 4%, respectively. With regards to Rotifera, in the major peak of June 2009 (38 species), was dominated by the various species of Brachionus and Keratella. The population density data revealed that cumulative site mean density ranged from 84 to 1579 Ind. l-1, with an overall mean of 399 Ind. l-1. The 24 months of mean site density indicated a major peak of 1579 Ind.

Total of 78 zooplankton species were recorded from the ponds waters during two years of study period which consisted of Rotifera 29 species (37%), Cladocera &Protozoa 16 species each (20% each), Copepoda 13 species (17%) and Ostracoda 4 species (5%). Among all the zooplankton classes, species belongs to the class Rotifera were recorded their dominance during both the years of study. The dominance of Rotifers population in terms of quality has been recorded. Seasonal variation of zooplankton population recorded maximum species diversity of class Rotifera during summer (1st year) and winter season (2nd year). On the other hand, minimum population density was contributed by class Copepoda in all the season. Presence of various pollution indicator zooplankton species indicates and evidences the high anthropogenic pressure and direct mixing sewage from the nearby catchment in the pond waters which has accelerated the eutrophication in the Sarangpani pond.

The physico-chemical parameters such as Total Alkalinity, Carbonate Alkalinity, Bi-Carbonate Alkalinity, Total Hardness, Ca Hardness, Mg Hardness, Ca Content, Mg Content, Chloride, Phosphate, Total Phosphoras, Organic Phosphoras, Nitrate, Biological Oxigen Demand and Chemical Oxigen Demand were analyzed to know the present status of the lakewater quality. After statistical analysis it was cleared that the positive co-relationship occurred between the attributes and attributes are independent to each other and these varied according to locations. INTRODUCTION: Upper lake is an east westerly elongated typical tropical lake, was built by king Bhoj of Dhar (1,000-1,055) by constructing a massive earthen structures across Kolans River. The lake has catchment area of 361 km2 with a water submergence length of 12 km and maximum width of 1.75 km at Full Tank Level. Available records reveal that the lake area was approximately 2 km2 in the beginning. In 1963 the water spread area of the lake increased form 13.8 km2 to maximum of 36.1 km2 by constructing 11 radial gates at Bhadbhada waste weir.

Or Doing things the right way? INTRODUCTION Environmental impact assessment (EIA), a systematic process to identify, predict and evaluate the environmental effects of proposed actions and projects is applied prior to major decisions and commitments being made. Under this study the social, cultural and health effects form an integral part in order to prevent, mitigate and offset the significant adverse effects of proposed undertakings. The EIS study provides information for decision-making on the environmental consequences of proposed actions; and promotes environmentally sound and sustainable development through the identification of appropriate enhancement and mitigation measures. With the infringement of the site the impacts become more complex and larger in scale thus, in order to reduce the burden of environmental impacts it becomes necessary to undertake EIA study for maintaining the sustainability of the project even after the developmental processes. The study minimizes the adverse effects that large scale development schemes have on natural resources and ecosystems. Increasingly, the scope of EIA includes consideration of all potentially significant effects -- direct, indirect and cumulative. Thus, EIA processes analyze a range of impact types within a single framework as it an efficient method for preserving natural resources and protecting the environment. It is thus anticipatory, participatory, and systematic in nature and relies on multidisciplinary input (Glasson et al ., 1994).

In 1971, an international treaty for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands was signed at Ramsar. ASHTAMUDI WETLAND It is in Kerala. A natural backwater in Kollam district. River Kallada and Pallichal drains into it. It forms an estuary with Sea at Neendakara which is a famous fishing harbour in Kerala. National Waterway 3 passes through it. Most tastiest backwater fish in kerala, the Karimeen of kanjiracode Kayal is from Ashtamudi Lake. BHITAKANIKA MANGROVES It is in Odisha. In 1975, an area of 672 km2 was declared the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary. The core area of the sanctuary, with an area of 145 km2, was declared Bhitarkanika National Park in September 1998. Gahirmatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, which bounds the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary to the east, was created in September 1997, and encompasses Gahirmatha Beach and an adjacent portion of the Bay of Bengal.
