FRIDAY 28th FEBRUARY TERM 1 NO MASS WEEK 5 SORRY SERVICE Wednesday Yr 4 Level 26th February 2020 ASSEMBLY 2.30pm Yr 4 & Yr 5 Camp Reflection Dear Parents, Today we celebrate Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday begins the holy season, marking the start of the 40 days leading up to Easter (not including Sundays). This 40-day period is known as Lent, and it usually includes a focus on fasting and prayer. The ashes used in the Mass today originated from the burning of palms from the previous year. As we are marked today with Ash, we begin our journey through Lent and prepare for the wonder of Easter. The ashes remind us that even though we don’t always live God’s way, if we ask God to forgive us, we will receive forgiveness and love. Thank you to Fr Isuru for celebrating Mass with the school community this morning and to Mrs Nettleingham for all her organisation. Shrove Tuesday Yesterday the school celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a special morning tea of delicious pancakes. A big thank you to all the wonderful parents and grandparents that cooked and served over 500 pancakes to some very excited children. Thank you also to Mrs Nettleingham for her preparation for the day. Jewellery Due to the safety of all children, jewellery is not permitted to be worn to school unless it is for religious purposes and can be safely worn under clothing where possible. Earrings need to be either a stud or sleeper. Camp Programs Last week our Year 4 and 5 students attended their camp programs. The children had a wonderful time and are to be commended on their outstanding behaviour, enthusiasm and commitment. A huge thanks to all the staff who attended the camp. It is a big effort to leave their own families and their interaction with the children and willingness to go over and above to ensure the students had an enjoyable camp was second to none. On Sunday, our Year 6’s head off on their exciting Canberra Adventure. Some of the places they will visit include Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial, Questacon, AIS, The Royal Mint, Telstra Tower and The Electoral Commission. It is an excellent opportunity for the students to experience some of Australia’s history. The staff attending the camp are Mrs Schinck, Mrs Darwish, Miss Lambell, Miss Collins, Miss Farrelly, Mr Dannaoui, Mr Dell’Oro and myself. Mrs Schinck will be in charge of the camp. During my absence, Miss Lamb and Mrs Nettleingham will be available should you need to speak to a member of Leadership. CareMonkey CareMonkey is a great tool for parents and schools to communicate with each other. Staff continually check CareMonkey for medical updates and parent responses to school activities. Can you please ensure that your child's CareMonkey profile is up to date and any Action Plans are uploaded. Any new Action Plans also need to be provided to the School Office. An Enrolment Register form is also being distributed during the Family Learning conversations. These forms only need to be completed and returned if your personal details have changed. 2021 Foundation Enrolments We are now taking Foundation (Prep) enrolments for 2021. Enrolment forms can either be downloaded from the school website or collected at the Office. If you have a child starting school next year and you have not handed in your form, we ask that you do so ASAP to secure a place. Family Learning Conversations Our Family Learning Conversations are currently taking place. These meetings are a great opportunity for parents to meet their child’s class teacher and to have an input into their child’s learning. During these meetings, Reading and Mathematics data will be shared as well as the child’s learning goal. If your meeting is tonight, please allow enough time to tour the learning space. Kids ROAR A letter was previously sent home via CareMonkey (A copy of the letter is in this newsletter) advertising Kids ROAR. Kids ROAR teaches children how to ‘R.O.A.R’. Recognise – feelings, safe/unsafe situations, warning signs and unsafe secrets. Own – their body and understand it belongs to them. Assert – with confidence to implement the “No, Go, Tell” strategy. Report – to their identified trusted adults and persist in telling until they feel safe. The program aims to empower children with skills and strategies to help protect their own personal safety, if faced with an unsafe situation including abuse. The Personal Safety Programs are based on the two Protective Behaviours themes: Theme 1: We all have the right to feel safe at all times. Theme 2: We can talk to someone we trust about anything, no matter what it is. A parent session will be held at Trinity on Wednesday 4th March at 7pm in the Multi-Purpose Room prior to the sessions being held with the students. I strongly encourage all parents to attend the session. Bushfire Fundraiser - Thursday 27 February Tomorrow the Social Justice Leaders and SRC will be leading the school fundraiser to assist students affected by the recent bushfires in Mallacoota. The students will raise money for the local P-12 school to help them rebuild their chicken pen that was ruined in the fire. Students may come dressed as their favourite Australian animal or character or in Australian colours, in return for the donation of a gold coin. More information can be found within this newsletter. Foundation Students Testing for Foundation students will be completed today. The Benchmark Assessments carried out over the past four Wednesdays provides valuable information about Foundation student’s Literacy and Mathematics knowledge and understandings. This helps to inform teachers to meet the learning needs of the students in their class. As of next week, Foundation students will be attending school on Wednesdays.
