The excursion will provide valuable opportunities to experience, first-hand, the knowledge and understanding learned in HSIE, Science, English and Visual Arts as students will be engaged in targeted programs at the Australian War Memorial, Questacon and the National Gallery of Australia. Students will also experience an evening tour of Telstra Tower. Date: Thursday 8 November 2018 and Friday 9 November 2018 Venue: Various locations around Canberra Time: Bus will be departing Church Street bus bay at 7am sharp Thursday morning and returning at 4:30pm Friday afternoon Cost: $200 Payment link: https://www.trybooking.com/418581 Dress: Neat, tidy and comfortable clothing, including enclosed footwear suitable for walking. Alternatively, payment is available at the office via Cheque/Cash or Eftpos. Students are not excluded from any activity where payment is a difficulty. Please contact Ms Amanda Wilson if you would like to discuss alternative arrangements for payment. Please note normal school rules apply. If any student brings banned substances to the excursion or behaves in an extreme manner parents must be prepared to drive to Canberra to collect their child. Please complete the below permission slip including online confirmation payment receipt and return to the school office. Final payment is Friday 19 October 2018; no notes or payments will be accepted after this date. Canberra 2018 Questacon Australian War Memorial National Gallery of Australia Telstra Tower On the 8th and 9th of November 2018, Year 10 students will be participating in an overnight excursion to Canberra. The excursion will provide valuable opportunities to experience, first-hand, the knowledge and understanding learned in HSIE, Science, English and Visual Arts as students will be engaged in targeted programs at the Australian War Memorial, Questacon and the National Gallery of Australia. Students will also experience an evening tour of Telstra Tower. Cost of $200 per student includes: ● Coach transport to and from Canberra, and between venues ● Participation in educational programs at the Australian War Memorial, Questacon, National Gallery, and Telstra Tower ● Overnight accommodation at Canberra Park Resort. Each room sleeps up to four students and has its own ensuite and reverse-cycle air conditioner, and all students’ doors are in view of staff rooms. Bed linen, pillows and towels are provided. ● Dinner on Thursday evening, and breakfast and lunch on Friday Educational Rationale Australian War Memorial: In History, Year 10 students will be studying the topics ‘Australians at War - WWI and WWII’, and ‘The Holocaust’. A tour of the Australian War Memorial will complement and enhance their studies of history, whilst helping students to understand the impact of the wars on Australian society.Students will undertake a guided tour,viewing primary sources and hearing accounts of the experiences of Australian soldiers during the WWI and WWII. The War Memorial has a range of exhibitions and galleries that cover the topics being studied. A visit in 2018 will be of added significance, with this year marking 100 years since the end of WWI. The War Memorial will be adding exhibitions to mark this significant occasion. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to build on their knowledge of history through visiting one of Australia’s major landmarks, and to understand the significance of war to Australia’s national identity. National Gallery of Australia: Education programs offered at the National Gallery of Australia aim to engage and inspire students across many learning areas including the visual arts and design. Programs are aligned to the Australian Curriculum and designed to help students to critical and creative thinking skills through making and responding to works of art. Students will be involved in workshops that allow them to explore Australian history, culture and national identity through the Australian art collection, which includes the largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in the world. This excursion to Questacon will provide students with a unique hands-on opportunity to explore and interact with many of the scientific outcomes presented in stages 4 and 5. The timing of the excursion coincides with the Physics program in Term 4. This will complement many of the theories and classroom activities your son/daughter will be studying. Expectations of Students A high standard of behaviour at school is required in order for students to attend the excursion. Repeated poor behaviour will result in students losing the right to attend. While on excursion students will be representing St Joseph’s and are expected to adhere to the Behaviour Management Policy and Outside Classroom Expectations. Students will: - Wear clothes that are neat, clean and tidy - Be punctual - Be courteous and respectful to others and their property - Follow ‘hands off’ rule - Be polite, respectful and listen attentively to whoever is speaking - Line up in bus lines for coaches - Follow the instructions of the Venue Instructors and Teachers - ̈Participate positively in all learning activities - Follow the Student Responsibility Agreement for Digital Devices - Leave transport and venues clean and free of rubbish In addition: - No student will be permitted to bring water bottles. Bottled water will be provided for students. - Random bag inspections will take place as required to ensure the safety and well being of all students. - If students do not adhere to the behaviour expectations or bring any school prohibited substances to the excursion parents will be expected to arrange for the collection their child from Canberra. .
