NARRATIVE TEMPLATE for a (credit) Traditional Associate Degree: Associate in Arts (A.A.) and Associate in Science (A.S.)

Item 1. Program Goals and Objectives The Associate in Arts in Graphic and Interactive Design provides a broad range of educational opportunities for aspiring . The curriculum pairs traditional design proficiencies including , , and branding with skills that include (UI) and (UX) Design, , , and motion graphics. Students develop a variety of conceptual and technical skills preparing them for a wide range of job opportunities and transfer to baccalaureate institutions.

While developing conceptual and technical skills, students are encouraged to expand soft skills essential in the industry. We added Design Thinking as an important component to the curriculum and courses are built to allow for collaboration, peer evaluation, portfolio review and project iteration.

Students who successfully complete the Associate Degree in Graphic and Interactive Design will be prepared for a wide range of job opportunities including entry- positions in , Web Design, and others. In addition, students will receive transfer credit to continue their studies at 4-year institutions.

Item 2. Catalog Description

The Associate in Arts (AA) in Graphic and Interactive Design provides a broad range of educational opportunities for aspiring designers. The curriculum pairs traditional design proficiencies with User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) skills by providing training in a variety of subjects including typography, illustration, branding, wireframing and prototyping, web design, and motion graphics. Students develop a variety of conceptual and technical skills preparing them for a wide range of in- demand job opportunities and transfer to baccalaureate institutions.

SLOs

Upon completing the program, the student will be able to:

1. Employ processes of traditional and interactive design, including requirements elicitation, prototyping, evaluation, and project iteration. 2. Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing a variety of graphic imaging, sketching, and prototyping applications. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of how the cognitive, sensory, and physical capabilities of users inform the design of interactive products. 4. Select, adapt, and apply suitable design approaches and techniques to define design problems and implement user-centric solutions. 5. Produce a high-quality portfolio of graphic and interactive design projects. 6. Exemplify efficient and constructive peer communications and teamwork in both remote and face-to- face environments.

Item 3. Program Requirements

a) Complete Major Field and Supporting Courses with a grade of C or better. b) Complete Ohlone GE (Plan A), CSU GE (Plan B), or IGETC for CSU (Plan C) General Education requirements. These requirements are specified in the Ohlone College catalog. c) Complete at least 60 degree-applicable units with a 2.0 grade point average. d) Complete at least 12 units at Ohlone College.

Advisory Committee Recommendations The Associate Degree in Graphic and Interactive Design is based on market-driven research, student demands, as well as faculty and advisory board recommendations. During the department’s last advisory board meeting, consisting of industry professionals and UC and CS professors, recommended the development of a design curriculum that is more centered in UX/UI design. We offer a more generic Multimedia AA degree and a Game Design and Animation AA degree.

This is a program modification of an already existing AA degree which we have offered for 13 years. The change is an expansion that reflect industry changes and labor market demands.
