This article is the first account by a descendant from the island that builds on these studies to describe the social and cultural organization and taboos concerning ikat-dyeing and the weaving of kewatek in the twenty-first century. It also discusses recent government intervention and the actions of local ngos to sustain Adonara textile identification and to stimulate the weaving of these sarongs for economic household purposes. • Raja Lorenzo II a Catholic Kingdom in the Dutch East Indies
RESEARCH Don Lorenzo Diaz Vieira Godinho of Larantuka, Flores, became Raja on 14 September 1887 and was deposed on 1 July 1904. During his reign he was the hope of the local Jesuit mission and often the despair of colonial civil authorities. In the end, as the Dutch leached power from the rajas, Lorenzo’s reign marked the end of any pretence of independent power. Raja Lorenzo II A Catholic kingdom in the Dutch East Indies R. H. Barnes Metz did gain influence over him, but things did not turn out as expected. Civil Commissioner E. F. Kleian sent word that the local heads wished to pass over Lorenzo, who was too young to take over the urchased from the Portuguese in 1859, the small kingdom of Larantuka was one of the very few government, which had fallen into decay owing to Gaspar’s indolence. Instead, they appointed Gaspar’s PCatholic realms in the Dutch East Indies. Spread across the islands of Flores, Solor, Adonara and half-brother Dominggo (Ecoma Verstege 1877b). A shocked Father Metz wrote the Bishop that things, Lembata, it was interspersed irregularly with the holdings of five smaller Muslim kingdoms. Before the ‘definitely against my desires’, had taken a completely different course. Metz objected to the fact, as he Dutch took over, the Rajas of Larantuka regarded themselves as independent monarchs with a tributary saw it, that Dominggo was a bastard of Lorenzo I. He had confidentially told two Christians who had the relationship to the Portuguese Crown. They were surprised and appalled to be sold.

  • Status and Habitat Associations of Birds on Lembata Island, Wallacea, Indonesia, with Reference to a Simple Technique for Avifaunal Survey on Small Islands
Bird Conservation International (2002) 12:365–381. BirdLife International 2002 DOI: 10.1017/S095927090200223X Printed in the United Kingdom Status and habitat associations of birds on Lembata Island, Wallacea, Indonesia, with reference to a simple technique for avifaunal survey on small islands COLIN R. TRAINOR Summary The islands of Wallacea were surveyed most intensely by field ornithologists in the nineteenth century, and again in the 1990s. However, the status and habitat use of bird species on many islands remains unknown. This study examined birds in several natural and disturbed habitats on Lembata (also known as Lomblen) Island, Indonesia. A total of 78 bird species were recorded including six endemic to the Lesser Sundas, an additional three Wallacean endemics and a total of 27 resident forest species. Including published records, 91 bird species have been recorded for Lembata. Extrapolation from the cumulative number of new species in the 45 samples gave an expected Total Bird Richness of 103.4 species. The frequency of occurrence of Lesser Sundas endemic bird species, all Wallacean endemics and Lesser Sundas endemic subspecies, forest-dependent species and frugivores was greatest in closed canopy forest (at higher elevations). Conversely, generalist ‘‘Australo-Papuan’’ species, granivores and nectarivores occurred more frequently in lowlands (including human-modified habitats). Protected area proposals were made in 1982, but there has been no management of natural areas for biological conservation on Lembata. Conservation activities aiming to stem forest loss and fragmentation in an Important Bird Area in southern Lembata, which includes significant populations of the Flores Green Pigeon Treron floris (Globally Vulnerable), may be an important step.

  • Ombudsman Ntt Soroti Angkutan Ekspedisi Lewat Feri Tanpa Tiket

  • 6 Kupang and the Five Loyal Allies, 1658-1700S |
6 Kupang and the fi ve loyal allies, 1658-1700s the formation of the five allies The Dutch post in Kupang was typical of the fortified trading offices that dotted the map of maritime Southeast Asia. It was a coastal stronghold situated by a river, which had an inter-dependent relationship with the local inhabitants populating the hinterland. A fortress strong enough to deter local adversaries housed a rudimentary administration staff that attempted to follow the statutes and orders from Batavia as well as it could, considering the limited resources available. The commander, or opperhoofd, headed a council consisting of four trusted Dutchmen, and managed both the administrative and purely commercial affairs. The commercial side of his duties was accentuated by the fact that along with his position as opperhoofd, he was also onderkoopman (under-merchant). The opperhoofden were normally appointed by Batavia, and for the most part were people with no previous experience of Timor. However, mortality rates were high at this distant post as there were illnesses from which the Dutchmen were unable to protect themselves. Many opperhoofden died in office after a few years or even months, and were succeeded by a locally residing Dutchman, the second in command, on a temporary basis. All this did little to foster continuity in Fort Concordia, whose soldiers could usually be counted in numbers of two digits. Rather, such continuity would be found among the allied princes on Timor and Solor. In line with the usual lines of development for VOC offices, a small settlement slowly evolved around Fort Concordia, which hardly seemed to merit the name ‘town’ until late in the eighteenth century.

  • Community Diversity and Unity in Witihama, Adonara1
Community Diversity and Unity in Witihama, Adonara1 R. H. Barnes (University of Oxford) Abstract For fourteen months in 2000-2001, I conducted research in the District of Witihama, east- ern Adonara. Witihama is a religiously mixed community, made up of Muslims and Catholics. However, both groups also practice blood sacrifice and carry out ceremonies required by adat. Muslims and Catholics are closely related by ties of marriage and descent. In the recent historical past, as well as in the ancient legendary past, the community has a remembered history of bloody warfare and murder, not linked to questions of modern religious allegiances, which provide incentives to take precautions to maintain community harmony and peace. Mindful of sectarian conflict elsewhere in Indonesia, Catholics and Muslims maintain close ties of cooperation and solidarity. On holidays like Christmas, Easter and Idul Fitri, for ex- ample, they hold community meetings to express mutual friendship. Members of the District have suffered from conflict elsewhere in Indonesia, for example during the fighting between Suku Batak and the ‘Flores people’ in 1999 in Batam, in the Moluccas and in the violence in Dili, East Timor. Refugees from these other conflicts came and went while I was there. There have been attempts at sectarian provocation in Witihama by people from elsewhere in the past, leading to their expulsion. There was an unexplained incident in which a hand grenade exploded in Witihama killing one child and injuring two others, causing considerable con- sternation within the community. Rumors of plans to bomb the Catholic church were taken seriously. Efforts to place East Timorese refugees in the Kabupaten of Flores Timur were strongly resisted on grounds of safety and local peace.

  • Tropical Cyclone Seroja Brought Floods and Landslides
www.svdcuria.org Tropical Cyclone Seroja brought floods and landslides: SVDs give an account and update A tropical cyclone named Seroja hit the islands in the Province of Nusa Tenggara Timur: Flores, Timor, Sumba and the small islands, and the neighboring country East Timor. According to CNN, on April 4, the powerful cyclone unleashed torrential rains causing flash floods in different areas. As a result of the La Niña phenomenon, the Tropical Cyclone Seroja hits Indonesia bringing heavy rains, flooding homes and destroying properties, and claiming several victims' lives. In neighboring East Timor, a two-year-old child was among the casualties in a landslide in Dili. A witness told Reuter news that roads have collapsed and trees have fallen, making it challenging to access some areas. It is believed that the havoc brought by Cyclone Seroja is the worst in 40 years. Heavy rains and strong wind are still forecasted in the coming days. Father Superior General Paulus Budi Kleden and Bro. Carlos Ferrada, the JPIC Coordinator, has received updates from the Province of Indonesia Timor (IDT), Indonesia Ende (IDE), Indonesia Timor (IDT), and the Region of Timor Leste (TLS). Fr. Suban Gapun, the regional of TLS and his vice, Fr. Manoj Manuel Khadary, describe the ravaging tropical cyclone Seroja hitting the region around Dili. Our formation house, still under construction, in Manleu-ana has been spared from any damages, but the first floor of the regional house in Dili was flooded. 13 people have lost their lives, including a Salesian Frater who was at home for Easter. Five of the victims are from our parish in Hera.
