www.svdcuria.org Tropical Cyclone Seroja brought floods and landslides: SVDs give an account and update A tropical cyclone named Seroja hit the islands in the Province of Nusa Tenggara Timur: Flores, Timor, Sumba and the small islands, and the neighboring country East Timor. According to CNN, on April 4, the powerful cyclone unleashed torrential rains causing flash floods in different areas. As a result of the La Niña phenomenon, the Tropical Cyclone Seroja hits Indonesia bringing heavy rains, flooding homes and destroying properties, and claiming several victims' lives. In neighboring East Timor, a two-year-old child was among the casualties in a landslide in Dili. A witness told Reuter news that roads have collapsed and trees have fallen, making it challenging to access some areas. It is believed that the havoc brought by Cyclone Seroja is the worst in 40 years. Heavy rains and strong wind are still forecasted in the coming days. Father Superior General Paulus Budi Kleden and Bro. Carlos Ferrada, the JPIC Coordinator, has received updates from the Province of Indonesia Timor (IDT), Indonesia Ende (IDE), Indonesia Timor (IDT), and the Region of Timor Leste (TLS). Fr. Suban Gapun, the regional of TLS and his vice, Fr. Manoj Manuel Khadary, describe the ravaging tropical cyclone Seroja hitting the region around Dili. Our formation house, still under construction, in Manleu-ana has been spared from any damages, but the first floor of the regional house in Dili was flooded. 13 people have lost their lives, including a Salesian Frater who was at home for Easter. Five of the victims are from our parish in Hera. The damages on houses and properties are still to be evaluated. Most of the parishes and Religious institutes have offered their places as shelters. Our SVD and SSPs Sisters are doing what they can by providing necessities such as medication and food for the families affected. A confrere from IDT shares information he received regarding West Timor including Kupang. These areas have experienced heavy rains and strong winds. As a result, thousands of houses have been flooded. Some buildings of our university Widya Mandira are damaged. We are waiting for the information from the Provincial whom we cannot contact because of the loss of internet connection due to the disaster. A confrere from the IDE province reported the massive floods and landslides in the islands of Adonara and Lembata. In Adonara, forty people are reported dead and several people are still missing. The two confreres working on the island are fine, but a direct communication with them was still not possible. In the island of Lembata, where we have an SVD parish and an SVD house, the situation is also critical. The local authorities have confirmed that twenty people are found dead and some are still missing. Our confreres there are safe. The IDE-JPIC Team is organizing a solidarity campaign to aid the victims of the Tropical Cyclone. From IDR, our confrere shares to the General JPIC Coordinator about the heavy winds still causing damages. The roof of Provincialate house has been damaged with punctured holes. He also related that out of caution from flying debris, the members of the community remained indoors. Regarding the Sumba Island which belongs to the IDR where we have several parishes and one school, there is still no information available due to the communication problems. As news and updates will continue to be received by the General JPIC coordinator's office, we will deliver them to you. In Father Superior General's name, we extend our condolences and support to all those families who have lost a loved one. We pray for all the victims who lost their properties and are now in shelters. We encouraged all our confreres and SSpS Sisters to continue their unconditional support and attention to those in need.     MEDIA RELEASE: New emergency measures in Indonesia put most vulnerable at risk 6 July 2021 Indonesian President Joko Widodo has recently announced new emergency measures to contain the latest COVID-19 surge in the country. The populous South-East Asian nation has been reporting an average of more than 20,000 infections daily for the past week, as more infectious virus variants spread in the community and put the hospital system under strain. The measures apply only to Java and Bali, and include tighter restrictions on movement and air travel, a ban on dining in restaurants and the closure of all non-essential offices. The new emergency measures aim to reduce the pressure on a hospital system that has been pushed to the brink. Currently, 93 per cent of beds in Jakarta’s hospitals are occupied, and some emergency wards have been forced to set up tents in car parks to make space. “These new emergency measures will help reduce the spread of the virus, but we’re concerned about the impact on vulnerable communities who don’t have the means to feed themselves and their families during this health crisis,” said Fr.     Lessons learned in outback Western Australia Andrew Marshall Research, Bureau of Meteorology Introduction The Northern Australia Climate Program (NACP) is a partnership between the Queensland Government (with funding from the Drought and Climate Adaptation Program), Meat and Livestock Australia, and the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) to bring together expert climate scientists, advisors, and regional producers to deliver innovative research, development, and extension outcomes for helping the grazing industry manage drought and climate risk across northern Australia. In the last week of May 2021, I was fortunate to represent the Bureau's involvement in the research component of the project with a climate roadshow to the Gascoyne and Pilbara shires of outback Western Australia (Figure 1). The focus of the trip was to help producers find, understand, and use forecasting information through the dissemination of weather and climate knowledge relevant to their specific region. My role was to discuss important climate drivers and their impacts through a series of workshops held at outback stations, to enable producers to make more informed assessments of seasonal climate forecasts. Reciprocally, participants provided practical advice and feedback for improving the Bureau's delivery of forecast information for these arid regions. Alongside me were Dr Chelsea Jarvis from USQ, and two 'Climate Mates' employed by the program to liaise with pastoralists – Alys McKeough for the first half of the trip to Wyloo, and Jardine Macdonald for the second half. They organised a detailed and exciting roadshow comprising ten station visits over eight days, totalling more than 2,000 km and 27 hours of driving (Figure 2).

This article is the first account by a descendant from the island that builds on these studies to describe the social and cultural organization and taboos concerning ikat-dyeing and the weaving of kewatek in the twenty-first century. It also discusses recent government intervention and the actions of local ngos to sustain Adonara textile identification and to stimulate the weaving of these sarongs for economic household purposes. Fokus kajian disertasi ini adalah menganalisis sikap Kerajaan Larantuka terhadap kebijakan politik kolonial Belanda, Misi Katolik Belanda, penduduk negeri pegunungan, dan kerajaan lokal sekitarnya.Kerajaan Larantuka yang dipimpin oleh raja-rajanya melakukan strategi politik sekutu dan seteru dalam mempertahankan kedaulatannya menghadapi kekuatan-kekuatan yang mengancamnya. Selama Abad ke-17 hingga abad ke-18, Kerajaan Larantuka bersekutu dengan Portugis dan para Kapiten Mayor dari keluarga Portugis Hitam, keluarga da Hornay dan da Costa untuk menghadapi kekuatan Belanda VOC dan Kerajaan Muslim Lima Pantai Solor Watan Lema .Pada abad ke-19, Kerajaan Larantuka dipaksa menerima hasil perjanjian Portugal dan Belanda yang dimulai sejak 1851 dan disetujui pada 20 April 1859. Perjanjian tersebut berisi penyerahan wilayah Flores dan Kepulauan Solor-Alor kepada Belanda. Sejak saat itu, Kerajaan Larantuka menjadi kerajaan bawahan Pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Belanda kemudian mengikat kontrak dengan Kerajaan Larantuka pada 28 Juni 1861, namun Korte Verklaring tersebut masih memberikan keleluasaan Kerajaan Larantuka untuk menjalankan pemerintahan secara otonom/zelfbesturende.Raja-raja Larantuka sejak 1851 melakukan perubahan strategi politik sekutu dan seterunya sebagai upaya tetap mempertahankan kedaulatannya.

    RESEARCH Don Lorenzo Diaz Vieira Godinho of Larantuka, Flores, became Raja on 14 September 1887 and was deposed on 1 July 1904. During his reign he was the hope of the local Jesuit mission and often the despair of colonial civil authorities.
