The resl is all of the same plane. Others show other crimes and all them are intensely realistic. That is what makes them so great a menace to society. The commission of the crime is portrayed so faithfully that il is as if one were to witness it in real life. Japanese and Cholos are among the principal patrons of these places. It is a piece of wood — not a highly worked thing, not ingeniously wrought, though it is an artefact of human labour rather than a natural body. Or is it? In the engraving, the piece of wood disappears: it is visible towards the bottom of the image, a sober pointed stump, but it is quickly subsumed by a second, enveloping entity that swirls about it in an embroidering corkscrew. What elements are here intertwin- ing? The legend beneath the engraving identifies the artefact thus: “Navis, prope Hispaniolam ann Dom 1659. Naufragium passae, asser, a clavo ferreo transfixus, corallio aspero candicante I. B. Obsitus, & a fundo maris anno 1687 expiscatus.” It describes a stake or spar from a ship wrecked off Hispaniola in 1659, which is transfixed by both an iron bolt and rough whitish coral, fished out of the depths in 1687. This collector’s item is neither the cliché of exemplarily beautiful coral nor straightforwardly a historical relic, but an intertwining of the two: the “transfixing” of a remnant of maritime technology by an aquatic agent. It exhibits the very proc- ess of encrustation. The spar is juxtaposed with the image of a jellyfish, and more proximately, engravings of Spanish silver coins, also encrusted with coral: “Nummus argenteus Hispanicus … incrustatus”, one of the labels reads.1 Still another illustra- tion, in a separate engraving, bears the legend “Frustum ligni e mari atlantico erutum cui adhaerescunt conchae anatiferae margine muricata” — a piece of “drift wood beset with bernecle [sic] shells”.

    Ocean Imaginings The Sea All through the nineteenth century, scientists studied the sea to learn more about its composition, its depths, its currents, the phenomena of tides and waves, its flora and fauna. There were numerous large-scale scientific expeditions to all four corners of the world, some of them including artists. François- Auguste Biard sailed on 1838-1840 expedition of the corvette La Recherche to Scandinavia, Lapland and Spitzberg led by the naturalist Paul Gaimard. Biard returned with extraordinary landscape paintings exalting the fantastical aspect of the Arctic setting, including Greenlanders Hunting Walrus: View of the Polar Sea (1841). The jumbled shapes of Biard's blocks of ice are echoed in Théodore Gudin's depiction of the raging sea off the coast of Belle-Ile, chosen by the biologist Alfred Frédol to illustrate Le Monde de la mer (The World of the Sea, 1865), one of the earliest popular science books. The American artist Edward Moran's painting The Valley in the Sea 1(1862) is more forward-looking. At the time, exploration of the sea-bed had not yet begun and an attempt to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable (in 1858) had ended in failure. Moran offers a purely imaginary vision of the bottom of the oceans, based on traditional elements of terrestrial scenery, but his depictions of its fauna and flora are based on the first works of science published on the subject. The Salon of the Venuses Moran's picture was exhibited in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Phildadelphia in 1862. The following year, Parisian art-lovers were offered a very different vision of the sea.

In some places a rough & incomplete summary is given, along with selected quotes. The listings are generally in the order that they are mentioned within a contact. Some topics are not listed as they are not easily labeled, such as incidents or discussions related to spiritual teachings & development, responsibility, psychology and similar matters.
