Academic Editor: Reinhard Länger Received: 18 August 2015; Accepted: 27 May 2016; Published: 27 May 2016 Abstract: The value of root and rhizome anatomy for the taxonomic characterisation of 59 species classified into 34 genera and 12 subtribes from the Asteraceae tribes Cardueae and Cichorieae was assessed. In addition, the evolutionary history of anatomical characters was reconstructed using a nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence-based phylogeny of the Cichorieae. Taxa were selected with a focus on pharmaceutically relevant species. A binary decision tree was constructed and discriminant function analyses were performed to extract taxonomically relevant anatomical characters and to infer the separability of infratribal taxa, respectively. The binary decision tree distinguished 33 species and two subspecies, but only five of the genera (sampled for at least two species) by a unique combination of hierarchically arranged characters. Accessions were discriminated—except for one sample worthy of discussion—according to their subtribal affiliation in the discriminant function analyses (DFA). However, constantly expressed subtribe-specific characters were almost missing and even in combination, did not discriminate the subtribes. -

Most members of the alliance are endemic to the oceanic archipelagos in the phytogeographic region of Macaronesia. They display extensive morphological, ecological, and anatomical diversity, likely caused by the diverse habitats on islands and rapid adaptive radiation. As a premier example of adaptive radiation and insular woodiness of species endemic to oceanic islands, the alliance has been the subject of intensive evolutionary studies. While phylogenetic studies suggested that it is monophyletic and its major lineages radiated rapidly early in the evolutionary history of this group, genetic mechanisms of speciation and genomic evolution within the alliance remain to be investigated. We first attempted to address chloroplast (cp) genome evolution by conducting comparative genomic analysis of three representative endemic species (Sonchus acaulis, Sonchus canariensis, and Sonchus webbii) from the Canary Islands. -

El-Amier Email: [email protected] Abstract: The family Asteraceae is the largest and the most cosmopolitan of the world particularly in semiarid region of the tropics and subtropics. In this present study investigate the ecology and edaphic factor effect of five species namely: Nauplius graveolens (Forssk.) Wiklund, Picris asplenioides L., Reichardia tingitana (L) Roth, Sonchus oleraceus L. and Urospermum picroides (L.) F.W. Schmidt. The study area is located in some selected governorates in the northern part of Nile Delta and Eastern Desert regions of Egypt. The total number of the recorded plant species in the present study was 182 species belonging to 144 genera and related to 37 families. Asteraceae contributing 18.13%, of all recorded species in the study area, followed by Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Fabaceae and Brassicaceae. The vegetation structure was classified by TWINSPAN classification into four groups. Group I was dominated by Retama raetam, group II was codominated by Diplotaxis harra and Bassia muricata, these groups represent the vegetation type of the inland desert. -

Most flowering plants have been shown to be ancient polyploids that have undergone one or more rounds of WGDs early in their evolution, and many lineages have since undergone additional, independent and more recent genome duplications. It was suggested that the paleopolyploidy events were crucial to the radiation and success of angiosperms, but evidence for proposed ancient genome duplications remains equivocal. Plant genomes are highly dynamic and usually go through intense structural rearrangements and gene loss following duplication. Old(er) WGDs can not
