Seguendo quello che un tempo era in Italia l’itinerario formativo canonico di un archeologo, frequenta, come borsista, la Scuola Nazionale di Archeologia a Roma dove si diploma nel 1951, discutendo una tesi sulle "Sculture ellenistiche di Rodi e Coo", elaborata nel rituale terzo anno che un borsista passava alla Scuola di Atene. Inizia la carriera accademica all’Università di Roma La Sapienza come assistente volontario di Etruscologia presso Massimo Pallottino negli anni 1948 e 1949; attività che prosegue negli anni 1951-1955 come assistente di Archeologia Classica presso Achille Adriani all’Università di Palermo, dove insegnerà per incarico la stessa disciplina negli anni accademici 1951-1953.
