Il triangolo Comparetti-Halbherr-Pernier offre, nei frequenti scambi epistolari, uno spaccato affascinante e, per molti versi, estremamente attuale della rete di interessi politici e scientifici che avevano mosso, già all’indomani della scoperta di Gortina, l’appassionato roveretano a cercare una sede greca per le sue missioni archeologiche. Da Firenze Domenico Comparetti crea i presupposti politici e individua vari ambiti della ricer - ca scientifica, mentre a Halbherr il giovane Luigi Pernier 5 appare come una figura che possa unire la concretezza dell’attività sul campo ad un’indole diplomatica. “Luigi Pernier (…) si distingue per una speciale vocazione per questi studii di storia e di anti - chità” 6 Pernier era stato selezionato nel 1897 come allievo della Scuola Archeologica di Roma da una severa commissione composta da D. Comparetti, R. Lanciani, F. Halbherr, E. Loewy ed E. De Ruggiero. Il giudizio unanime di idoneità aveva confermato l’ottima prova che qualche mese prima Pernier aveva sostenuto discutendo la tesi di laurea di fronte, tra gli altri, a Giulio Beloch e con Lanciani come relatore.

    1 Commemorazione di Carlo Gasparri a Napoli ANTONINO DI VITA Antonino Di Vita è nato il 19 ottobre 1926 a Chiaramonti Gulfi (in provincia di Ragusa); si è spento a Roma il 23 ottobre 2011, poco dopo aver compiuto 85 anni. Ha frequentato l’Università a Catania, dove nel 1947 ha conseguito la laurea – con dignità di stampa - in Archeologia e Storia dell’arte greca e romana, avendo avuto come Maestri Guido Libertini e Santo Mazzarino. Seguendo quello che un tempo era in Italia l’itinerario formativo canonico di un archeologo, frequenta, come borsista, la Scuola Nazionale di Archeologia a Roma dove si diploma nel 1951, discutendo una tesi sulle "Sculture ellenistiche di Rodi e Coo", elaborata nel rituale terzo anno che un borsista passava alla Scuola di Atene. Inizia la carriera accademica all’Università di Roma La Sapienza come assistente volontario di Etruscologia presso Massimo Pallottino negli anni 1948 e 1949; attività che prosegue negli anni 1951-1955 come assistente di Archeologia Classica presso Achille Adriani all’Università di Palermo, dove insegnerà per incarico la stessa disciplina negli anni accademici 1951-1953. Negli anni successivi Antonino Di Vita lascerà l’Università per intraprendere la carriera di archeologo militante: entrato nel 1955 nel ruolo di quelle che all’epoca si chiamavano le Soprintendenze alle Antichità e Belle Arti, presterà servizio, come Ispettore e poi come Direttore, nelle sedi di Siracusa, di Roma - Etruria meridionale e Firenze. Th e article off ers a study of the Luigi Pigorini’s letters addressed to Federico Halbherr, nowadays kept at Rovereto. Th is documentation (consisting of 50 letters, mostly written in the period 1899-1905) is very interesting from several points of view: it adds new details on the fi rst works carried out by the Italian Archaeological Mission in Crete at the very beginning of the 20th century and on the close relationships between archaeological researches and political aff airs. Moreover, the letters written by Pigorini are a valuable tool to understand why Italian prehistorians were not interested to the Cretan Bronze Age, notwithstanding the important Minoan fi ndings carried out by the Italian Mission. Key words: Crete - Prehistory - Minoan - Italian Mission - Correspondence. Riassunto - Nicola Cucuzza - Fra archeologia e politica: lettere di Luigi Pigorini a Federico Halbherr nell’Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati. Nel “fondo Halbherr” dell’Accademia degli Agiati di Rovereto si conservano 50 lettere inviate da Luigi Pigorini a Federico Halbherr, datate quasi interamente al periodo compreso fra il 1899 ed il 1905. Le missive mostrano diversi dati di interesse, relativi ai primi anni di vita della Missione Archeologica Italiana a Creta, consentendo di verifi care la stretta connessione che le indagini archeologiche ebbero su un piano diplomatico e politico.
