Only once before has the reigning Emperor of Japan ventured forth from his beautiful island realm to travel abroad. It is as old as written history and survives into modem times. Victims appear as heroes in Buddhist, Shinto, and Shinto-Buddhist cults and in numer- ous works of Japanese literature, theater and the arts. In a number of articles I have pub- lished on this subject,' I tried to offer a religious interpretation, emphasizing the need to placate political victims in order to safeguard the state from their wrath. Unappeased political victims were believed to seek revenge by harming the living, causing natural calamities, provoking social discord, jeopardizing the national welfare. Beginning in the tenth century, such placation took on a national importance. Elsewhere I have tried to demonstrate that the cult of political victims forced political leaders to worship their for- mer enemies in a cult providing the religious legitimization, that is, the mainstay of their power.' The reason for this was, as I demonstrated, the attempt leaders made to control natural forces through the worship of spirits believed to influence them. -

Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1993 20/2-3 The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’s Subjugation of Silla Akima Toshio In prewar Japan, the mythical tale of Empress Jingii’s 神功皇后 conquest of the Korean kingdoms comprised an important part of elementary school history education, and was utilized to justify Japan5s coloniza tion of Korea. After the war the same story came to be interpreted by some Japanese historians—most prominently Egami Namio— as proof or the exact opposite, namely, as evidence of a conquest of Japan by a people of nomadic origin who came from Korea. This theory, known as the horse-rider theory, has found more than a few enthusiastic sup porters amone Korean historians and the Japanese reading public, as well as some Western scholars. There are also several Japanese spe cialists in Japanese history and Japan-Korea relations who have been influenced by the theory, although most have not accepted the idea (Egami himself started as a specialist in the history of northeast Asia).1 * The first draft of this essay was written during my fellowship with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and was read in a seminar organized by the institu tion on 31 January 199丄. 1 am indebted to all researchers at the center who participated in the seminar for their many valuable suggestions. HUMANITIES INSTITUTE JAPANESE HISTORY Paul Clark, Ph.D Course Description: This course offers an introduction to the history of Japan from pre-history to the present. We will trace the history of Japan in several different epochs. First, we will investigate how Japanese civilization emerged and how early governments were constituted. Second, we will consider the Yamato Clan and the Nara and Heian periods. Third, we will study the rise of the period dominated by warriors, the first shōgunate and the feudal era. Fourth, we will consider how and why the bakufu (tent government--shōgunate) lost its vitality in the late 18th century and why it was unable to deal with the international crisis which led to its demise. We will discuss the irony of how a military coup d’état, initiated by samurai, led to the dissolution of a samurai-based society and to the construction of the modern Japanese state. Along the way we will study how democracy in the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa eras failed and led to the militarism of the Pacific War. Fifth, we will discern whether or not the American occupation of Japan led to substantive changes within Japanese culture, economics and government. Finally, we will discuss Japan today. In particular, we will examine modern Japanese society, the government and the enduring problem of the economic recession. About the Professor The course was prepared by Paul Clark, Ph.D. who is an East Asia area specialist and Associate Professor of History at West Texas A&M University. Dr. Clark is the author of The Kokugo Revolution: Education, Identity and Language Policy in Imperial Japan (2009) and is the recipient of a 2006 Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship. -

Of Mice and Maidens: Ideologies of Interspecies Romance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan Abstract Interspecies marriage (irui kon'in) has long been a central theme in Japanese literature and folklore. Frequently dismissed as fairytales, stories of interspecies marriage illuminate contemporaneous conceptions of the animal-human boundary and the anxieties surrounding it. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of animal studies yb examining otogizoshi (Muromachi/early Edo illustrated narrative fiction) concerning elationshipsr between human women and male mice. The earliest of these is Nezumi no soshi ("The Tale of the Mouse"), a fifteenth century ko-e ("small scroll") attributed to court painter Tosa Mitsunobu. Nezumi no soshi was followed roughly a century later by a group of tales collectively named after their protagonist, the mouse Gon no Kami. Unlike Nezumi no soshi, which focuses on the grief of the woman who has unwittingly married a mouse, the Gon no Kami tales contain pronounced comic elements and devote attention to the mouse-groom's perspective. -

Methodology for Analyzing the Genealogy of Ancient Japanese Clans Methodology for Analyzing the Genealogy of Ancient Japanese Clans Masanobu SUZUKI Abstract The genealogies of ancient Japanese clans were created to declare their political positions and claim legiti- macy for their service to the great kings in the Yamato sovereignty. Their genealogies, which include a great deal of semi-fictional content, and they are closely related to the “logic of rule”. In other words, they are representa- tions of the view of the world created by the ancient clans and used to support each other. By analyzing the genealogies, we can understand the actual situations of the ancient clans that we were not able to illuminate by using well-known historical materials. In addition, we can reveal the formation process of ancient Japan. How- ever, these points are not well known to Japanese researchers, much less to foreign researchers. Furthermore, until now, the history of genealogical studies was compiled as necessary in case studies, or classified from a research- er’s own particular viewpoint. Therefore, in this article, I have presented previous research in chronological order and by various categories, confirmed each category’s respective significance, and advocated three methodologies for analyzing the genealogies. PART ONE GENERAL THEMES THE STRANGE SURVIVAL AND ITS MODERN SIGNIFICANCE Imatani Akira When Did the Present Dynasty Start? Most scholars agree that the traditional account, according to which the imperial dynasty was founded in 660 BC by Emperor Jimmu, is a myth, and that the fi rst nine emperors on the offi cial list are legendary fi gures. Even so, the imperial family of Japan is the longest reigning dynasty in the world, as it has been on the throne for either 1,500 or 1,700 years. The reason for the two different fi gures is that we are uncertain whether the lineage broke in the early sixth century between Emperor Buretsu and Emperor Keitai. If, as some scholars claim,1 Keitai started a new line in the sixth century, then the present dynasty is about 1,500 years old; on the other hand, if there was a genealogi- cal link between Buretsu and Keitai, then the dynasty started about 1,700 years ago in the fourth century. In the latter case, its founder was probably Mimaki Iri Biko, known as Emperor Sujin, whose title Hatsukuni Shirasu Sumera Mikoto (‘The Emperor who First Ruled the Land’) suggests this. Archaeological research into the kofun, the burial mounds of the fourth to the seventh centuries, has made great advances in recent years. It is now the prevailing view that the Hashihaka burial mound in Nara Prefecture may be the tomb of the person referred to as Himiko in the Wei zhi woren zhuan, or the ‘Account of the People of Wa,’ in the Annals of the Kingdom of Wei. -

FUSŌ GOBUSSHIN RON - ENGLISH TRANSLATION – - Fascicle 1 - Translation Treatise on Japan's Protecting Buddha's and Gods - Preface. Anciently, the Great Priest Furi Qisong1 (1007-1072) hid himself near the West Lake for thirty years. Broadly he perused the instructions from Lu2, widely he searched the Indian scriptures, and he wrote down [his findings] in Fujiaobian 輔教編 ("Compilation in aid of the Teaching") and Fei Han 非韓3 ("Refuting Han [Yu]"), thirty chapters in all. He came to the aid of the teachings of Śākya[muni, which] were already on the verge of collapsing. I was forced to withdraw4 to the village Nanmoku,5 [where] I 1 Song Mingjiao dashi is the Chinese priest Furi Qisong 佛日契嵩, a.k.a. Mingjiao-dashi. (N.B. The Japanese pronunciation of the name 契嵩 is "Kaisū.") Amongst other things, he was an exponent of the sanjiao heyi 三教合一 ("Unity of the Three Teachings"). Bussho kaisetsu daijiten lists six titles under his name. 2 The words "the instructions of Lu" are evidently opposed to the words "Indian scriptures," i.e. Buddhist texts. The same applies to the seven loci one can find through the "SAT Daizōkyō Text Database"; here, too, the words are opposed to zhufen 竺墳, (six times) and shidian 釋典 (one time). The term evidently refers to the Confucian corpus (perhaps to Lunyu?). The Vicissitudes of the Miroku Triad in the Lecture Hall of Yakushiji Temple J. Edward Kidder, Jr. The Lecture Hall (Ko¯do¯) of the Yakushiji in Nishinokyo¯, Nara prefecture, was closed to the public for centuries; in fact, for so long that its large bronze triad was almost forgotten and given little consideration in the overall development of the temple’s iconography. Many books on early Japanese Buddhist sculpture do not mention these three images, despite their size and importance.1) Yakushiji itself has given the impression that the triad was shielded from public view because it was ei- ther not in good enough shape for exhibition or that the building that housed it was in poor repair. But the Lecture Hall was finally opened to the public in 2003 and the triad became fully visible for scholarly attention, a situation made more intriguing by proclaiming the central image to be Maitreya (Miroku, the Buddha of the Fu- ture). The bodhisattvas are named Daimyo¯so¯ (on the Buddha’s right: Great wondrous aspect) and Ho¯onrin (left: Law garden forest). The triad is ranked as an Important Cultural Property (ICP), while its close cousin in the Golden Hall (K o n d o¯ ), the well known Yakushi triad (Bhais¸ajya-guru-vaidu¯rya-prabha) Buddha, Nikko¯ (Su¯ryaprabha, Sunlight) and Gakko¯ (Candraprabha, Moonlight) bodhisattvas, is given higher rank as a National Treasure (NT). In view of the ICP triad’s lack of exposure in recent centuries and what may be its prior mysterious perambulations, this study is an at- tempt to bring together theories on its history and provide an explanation for its connection with the Yakushiji.
