Osmanli'dan Cumhuriyet'e Gaziantep Ermenileri T.C. İstanbul Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Tarih Anabilim Dalı Yüksek Lisans Tezi OSMANLI’DAN CUMHURİYET’E GAZİANTEP ERMENİLERİ Hazırlayan Ramazan Erhan GÜLLÜ 2501060106 Tez Danışmanı Prof. Dr. Ali ARSLAN İstanbul 2009 ÖZ Bir yerleşim yeri olarak, mevcudiyeti tarih öncesi çağlara kadar uzanan Antep şehri, içinde birçok uygarlığın izlerini barındırır. Halife Hz. Milli Mücadele sırasında Fransızlarla birlikte Türklere karşı savaşan Ermeniler, 1921 Ankara Anlaşması’yla Fransızların bölgeden çekilmesinin ardından, 1922 yılında Antep’i terk ederek önce Suriye’ye, oradan da dünyanın değişik yerlerine göç etmişlerdir. Anahtar Sözcükler: Antep, Ermeni, İsyan, Fransız, Milli Mücadele ii ABSTRACT As a settlement place, Aintab whose roots date back to the prehistory accommodates the traces of many civilizations in itself. During the 16th and the 17th centuries the Armenians, though in small numbers, also began to settle down to Aintab which joined to the Islamic geography in the period of the Caliph Ömer and became a Turkish territory with several Turkish tribes getting established in the region beginning from the 11th century. The Armenian population increased in time, in paralel with the migrations it received in years and various reasons such as the geographical situation of the city and the economic condition; moreover, by the 19th century, approximately, one out of five of the city’s total population had became Armenian. The Turks and the Armenians lived as two harmonious groups who presented cultural interaction mutually in Aintab until the middle of the 19th century as well as the other parts of the country. It isn’t come across any problem, which stems from either religious or ethnical reasons between the Armenians and their Muslim neighbours in Aintab until the 1850s. However, beginnig from these years, some troubles, which broke out throught the Ottoman Empire owing to several reasons, began to ocur between the Muslims and the Armenians who lived in Aintab. Despite of the fact that these troubles caused to begin a chilliness between two communities, it did not turn into a reciprocal clash until 1895. In 1895; however, the Armenians gave a start to a revolt in Aintab besides to many places of the country; thus, it lead to an armed battle between the Turks and the Armenians for he first time. The affairs of two communities did not seperate despite of the revolt in 1895. Because, not only did all the Armenians not participate in the revolt, but the Muslims did not attribute all the troubles created by some comiteers to whole Armenian community. However, the affairs would follow always an unfavourable course from that time. In 1915, this time, a similar revolt attempt was prevented by the authorities having found out beforehand; thus, they did not let a new clash. Initially, the iii Armenians of Aintab were excused from the law of “dispatch and settling” put out by the Ottoman Goverment at the same year; but afterwards, they were made to dispatch in apprehension of a similar chaos. The Armenians of Aintab, who were made to dispatch, returned to the city in 1918; yet, apart from them thousands of Armenians, who were originally from different cities, were also brought to the city which were under English invasion by English pressure. The invasions which began at the end of World War I were the last stage of the Turk-Armenian affairs in Aintab. During English invasion, local Armenians took on the guidance and translation stuff of the invadors completely. French invasion period and the Armenian’s joining to the French army was the eventual event which broke off all the relations between the Turks and the Armenians in Aintab. Almost all the Armenians of Aintab took part on the line of French during the war; besides, the districts of Armenian were turned into front lines against the Turkish ones. After the French’s retreat from the region with the Covenent of Ankara in 1921, the Armenians who battled with the French against the Turks during the Turkish National Struggle, having left Aintab, in 1922 migrated firstly to Syria and then to various parts of the world. Key Words: Aintab, Armenian, Revolt, French, National Struggle iv ÖNSÖZ Bugün dünyanın en sorunlu bölgeleri olan Ortadoğu, Kafkaslar ve Balkanlar’da uzun yıllar hüküm süren Osmanlı Devleti’nin sınırları içinde farklı din ve ırklardan birçok millet yüzyıllarca huzur içinde yaşadı. • A View of the History of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine
A VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE ISTANBUL FACULTY OF MEDICINE Prof. Dr. Nuran Yıldırım The Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics Attributing the roots of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine to the Fatih Darüşşifa after a great deal of discussion, the 500th anniversary of medical education in Istanbul was celebrated in 1970. The soundest documents showing that medical education was carried out in the Fatih Dârüşşifa were the appointment papers (rüus) of medical students for the dârüşşifa in the 60 years between 1723 and 1783. These nine rüus, which were recently published, clarify that there were positions for six medical students in the dârüşşifa, and that whenever a vacancy came up, a new medical student would be appointed by the chief physician to undergo a systematic medical training. 1-Archival document concerning Ismail Efendi‟s appointment in place of Derviş Mehmet in Fatih Darüşşifa after his death. With the opening of the Süleymaniye Medical Medrese, medical education in Istanbul, which had started with the Fatih Dârüşşifa, became institutionalized. The opening of a medical medrese for the first time in the Ottoman State is accepted as being an important step in our history of medical education. The Süleymaniye Medical Medrese (Süleymaniye Tıp Medresesi) was a medrese for specializing, or a “post-graduate” course, as only students who had completed their classic medrese education could continue. Not only did the physicians that were trained join the scholarly classes, but at the same time they could be qadi or rising even to the level of sheikh-ul-Islam or grand vizier.

  • Mythistory in a Nationalist Age
MYTHISTORY IN A NATIONALIST AGE: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SERBIAN AND GREEK POSTMODERN FICTION by TATJANA ALEKSIĆ A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Comparative Literature written under the direction of Professor Marie Josephine Diamond New Brunswick, New Jersey May, 2007 © 2007 Tatjana Aleksić ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Mythistory in a Nationalist Age: A Comparative Analysis of Serbian and Greek Postmodern Fiction By TATJANA ALEKSIĆ Dissertation Director: M. Josephine Diamond The dissertation is a study of postmodern Serbian and Greek novels that reflect the most recent historical trauma in the Balkans. The texts I analyze in specific chapters are Eugenia Fakinou’s The Seventh Garment (1983), Milorad Pavić’s The Dictionary of the Khazars (1984), Rhea Galanaki’s The Life of Ismail Ferik-Pasha (1989), and David Albahari’s Bait (1996). The appropriation of the term ‘mythistory’ as a key concept in defining the postmodern narratives analyzed in my dissertation derives from the absence of a clear distinction between mythological and historical national origins. In the Serbian texts analyzed interrogations of history feature as the dominant narrative mode, while even in historically informed Greek texts mythical subtext often figures as the cardinal referent. A possible reason for such a broad appropriation of myth lies in the claim of late 18th-century Greek nationalists to the classical glory of Ancient Greece. This liaison enabled the closure of the gap between the classical period of, predominantly mythically informed, Greek antiquity and post-Ottoman Greek modernity.

  • Letters from Vidin: a Study of Ottoman Governmentality and Politics of Local Administration, 1864-1877
LETTERS FROM VIDIN: A STUDY OF OTTOMAN GOVERNMENTALITY AND POLITICS OF LOCAL ADMINISTRATION, 1864-1877 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Mehmet Safa Saracoglu ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Carter Vaughn Findley, Adviser Professor Jane Hathaway ______________________ Professor Kenneth Andrien Adviser History Graduate Program Copyright by Mehmet Safa Saracoglu 2007 ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on the local administrative practices in Vidin County during 1860s and 1870s. Vidin County, as defined by the Ottoman Provincial Regulation of 1864, is the area that includes the districts of Vidin (the administrative center), ‛Adliye (modern-day Kula), Belgradcık (Belogradchik), Berkofça (Bergovitsa), İvraca (Vratsa), Rahova (Rahovo), and Lom (Lom), all of which are located in modern-day Bulgaria. My focus is mostly on the post-1864 period primarily due to the document utilized for this dissertation: the copy registers of the county administrative council in Vidin. Doing a close reading of these copy registers together with other primary and secondary sources this dissertation analyzes the politics of local administration in Vidin as a case study to understand the Ottoman governmentality in the second half of the nineteenth century. The main thesis of this study contends that the local inhabitants of Vidin effectively used the institutional framework of local administration ii in this period of transformation in order to devise strategies that served their interests. This work distances itself from an understanding of the nineteenth-century local politics as polarized between a dominating local government trying to impose unprecedented reforms designed at the imperial center on the one hand, and an oppressed but nevertheless resistant people, rebelling against the insensitive policies of the state on the other.

ABSTRACT The main focus of this study is to examine the modernization of the Ottoman navy during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, exploring naval administration, education, and technology. Giving a summary of the transformation of shipbuilding technologies and bureaucratic institutions of the Ottoman naval forces between 1808 and 1861, it analyses the structure of the Ottoman navy, its level of development in comparison to previous periods of time, and the condition of the vessels making up the naval fleet from 1861 to 1876. It also intends to evaluate the character of existing administrative structures at the outset of Abdülaziz’s reign in 1861 and the nature of subsequent changes, including structural reorganization of the Imperial Naval Arsenal, the Ministry of Marine, and the Naval Academy, as well as advancements in military training and seafaring; all within the context of the impact of these changes on the military, political, and economic condition of the Empire during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz.
