Unser erstes Zusammentreffen fand allerdings an Silve- ster 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia, statt, als er zusammen mit Steve Earl ein Konzert gab. Tony Brown und ich sahen uns die Show von den Seitenflügeln aus an und beobachteten Marty, wie er durch den ersten Set stol- zierte. Tony war damals der Vizepräsident der A&R-Abteilung von MCA RECORDS in Nashville und auf bestem Weg, der Top-Pro- duzent der Stadt zu werden. Er flüsterte mir zu: "Ich überlege, Marty unter Vertrag zu nehmen. Willst Du ihn zusammen mit mir produzieren?" Natürlich wollte ich, keine Frage. Ich war nicht so sehr von dem überzeugt, was Marty da machte. Doch ich mochte, wie er es tat. Der Typ besaß eine gewaltige Ausstrahlung und eine Präsenz wie Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Lester Flatt, Porter Wa- goner, Cash und viele andere… alle in einer Person vereinigt. Marty Stuart war ein junger und zugleich alter Profi. Als wir mit unserer Vorproduktion begannen und Songs für das erste Album aussuchten, lernte ich Marty kennen und erfuhr von seinem Aufstieg im Business als Mitglied der Bands von Lester Flatt und Johnny Cash. Marty kannte nahezu jeden. Wir teilten die ernsthafte Liebe zur Country Music und zu ihrer Geschichte, Tradition und den Musikern früherer Epochen. Sehr schnell emp- fand ich große Hochachtung und Respekt für Marty Stuart, beides hält bis zum heutigen Tag an. Als Musiker, Songschreiber, Hi- storiker, Sammler, Fotograf, Texter, Fernsehmoderator und Interpret ist Marty so etwas wie eine Ein-Mann-Armee zur Rettung der Country Music. Ich war damals nach Nashville gezogen, weil ich Platten genauso wie 'Hillbilly Rock' und 'Tempted' machen wollte. Auch nach 25 Jahren bin ich immer noch sehr stolz auf sie. Beide Alben spiegeln die Tradition und die Geschichte der Country Music wider. Mit dieser Wiederveröffentlichung von BEAR FAMILY auf Vinyl bekommen sie nun ihre eigene Geschichte.     Philadelphia ohn Marty Stuart né le 30 septembre 1958 à Philadelphia, Mississippi, USA, est un chanteur- compositeur américain de musique country. J Il crée une musique faite d’une fusion éclectique de rockabilly, honky tonk et musique country traditionnelle. Au début des années 1990, il connaît un grand succés avec la sortie de nombreux Hits. L’enfant prodige musical. Dès son plus jeune âge, passionné par la musique country il apprend à jouer de la guitare et de la mandoline. À l'âge de 12 ans, Marty Stuart commence à jouer avec le groupe bluegrass The Sullivan Family. Il fait la connaissance de Roland White, alors membre du groupe. Roland White En 1972 Roland White invite Marty Stuart à jouer avec lui avec le Nashville Grass sur un concert dans l’état de Delaware (sur la côte Est des États-Unis). Aprés cette prestation, Roland demande à Marty d’ être permanent dans le Band de Lester Flatt dont il fait partie. Marty est resté dans ce groupe jusqu'à ce que Lester Flatt cesse son activité en 1978 en raison d’une santé défaillante; il décède d'une insuffisance cardiaque à Nashville le 11 mai 1979, à l'âge de 64 ans. Marty et Lester Flatt Agé seulement de 14 ans Marty apparaît ainsi dans la 5 ème saison de ‘’ Hee-Haw’’, un spectacle de variétés de télévision américaine présentant de la musique country. The yellow­gray Asian sky is weighted with its own peculiar blend of smells…thick exhaust fumes of heavy traffic, dust, cow dung, spicy vegetable fritters in a stall beside the road. There is a deafening blast of bus horns, rickshaw motors, and cinema music. There is all the excitement of being in a gaggle of sixteen­year­old girls set loose on a rare, chaperoned, shopping trip in a city thirty miles away from our boarding school. In the middle of this…in the middle of the bustle and noise, the heat and smells…just for an instant, everything stands still. An indelible event imprints itself in my mind. A girlfriend and I are just rounding a corner in the crowded marketplace, when out of nowhere a bicycle veers toward us and a man jeeringly reaches out and grabs my friend’s breast. There are many memories that pile up one after another when I look at that snapshot. In a way I’m puzzled that I should even remember the event. It was so commonplace. It was such a non­event. Such things were an everyday part of what it meant to be white and female in that Islamic culture. So I wonder a bit why that photo has planted itself so fiercely in my mind. It’s almost as though it wants to wave itself in my face and insist, "Look at this! Look! Do you see what happened?" So, I’m stopping now and looking at it.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. “WHITE, BLACK, AND DUSKY”: GIRL GUIDING IN MALAYA, NIGERIA, INDIA, AND AUSTRALIA FROM 1909-1960 by SALLY STANHOPE Under the Direction of Christine Skwiot ABSTRACT This comparative study of Girl Guiding in Malaya, India, Nigeria, and Australia examines the dynamics of engagement between Western and non-Western women participants. Originally a program to promote feminine citizenship only to British girls, Guiding became tied up with ef- forts to maintain, transform, or build different kinds of imagined communities—imperial states, nationalists movements, and independent nation states. From the program’s origins in London in 1909 until 1960 the relationship of the metropole and colonies resembled a complex web of in- fluence, adaptation, and agency. The interactions between Girl Guide officialdom headquartered in London, Guide leaders of colonized girls, and the colonized girls who joined suggest that the foundational ideology of Guiding, maternalism, became a common language that participants used to work toward different ideas and practices of civic belonging initially as members of the British Empire and later as members of independent nations.
