Schnapsen Die Regeln Das Leben ist DAS ZIEL In den weiteren Spielen wechseln sich die Spieler in den Rollen des Gebers und der Vorhand jeweils ab. Ziel des Spieles ist es, durch Stche und Ansagen wie Fahrrad fahren, möglichst rasch 66 Augen oder mehr zu sammeln. Anmerkung: Die in den Stchen enthaltenen Karten DAS SPIEL zählen nach ihren Augen, für ein gewonnenes oder Die Vorhand spielt zum ersten Stch aus. Zu Beginn verlorenes Spiel gibt es Punkte. um die Balance zu des Spieles herrscht weder Farb- noch Stchzwang: DIE KARTEN Der Geber kann entweder mit einer höheren Karte derselben Farbe oder einem Trumpf stechen – in DOPPELDEUTSCHE FARBEN diesem Fall gewinnt er den Stch. Er kann aber auch eine halten musst du in beliebige Karte abwerfen und den Stch der Vorhand überlassen. Die verbleibenden Karten bilden den Talon und werden • mit einer höheren Karte der angespielten Farbe als verdeckter Stapel quer auf die aufgeschlagene Karte stechen. -

A METROPOLITAN OPERA DISCOGRAPHY Frederick P. Fellers, comp. The Metropolitan Opera on Record: A discography of the commercial recordings. Westport, Connecticut: Greenwood Press, 1984. (Discographies, No. 9.) Pp. xix+ 101. $25.00. Just what belongs in a Metropolitan Opera discography? A few years back, in anticipation of the company's recent centennial, I pondered possible approaches. Most expansively--and most usefully for the growing field of performance history--one might tabulate all recordings ever made by people who performed at the Met. A mammoth undertaking, that; if it didn't quite do for vocalists what Creighton's census did for fiddlers on disc, it would probably bulk as large, and cost even more to produce. One might reasonably suggest restricting the listings to recordings of music the singers actually sang at the Met, but in practice that would make an extremely frustrating book: nothing less than a vast collection of partial discographies! And, although not as bulky as the first alternative, it would be almost as complex to compile--after all, the research would have to be equally comprehensive, simply to establish the completeness of the listings of Met-role recordings. Frederick Fellers' Metropolitan Opera discography has, sensibly, a more restricted aim: to list, in the words of the introduction, "all known commercial recordings made by the Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra, with and without soloists"--in effect, all recordings involving the permanent forces of the company, not merely its transient soloists. (He--! think wisely--doesn't tackle the copious literature of live-performance recordings, which entail different sorts of discographical problems.) Within this central area of Met recordings, Fellers has done useful and thorough work, and--as far as I can check data against my own collection and sources--done it meticulously and reliably. -

He is an accredited consultant on gaming terminology to the Oxford English Dictionary and regularly advises on the staging of card games in films and television productions. His many books include The Oxford History of Board Games, The Oxford History of Card Games, The Penguin Book of Word Games, The Penguin Book of Card Games and the The Penguin Book of Patience. His board game Hare and Tortoise has been in print since 1974, was the first ever winner of the prestigious German Game of the Year Award in 1979, and has recently appeared in a new edition. Pinochle From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Pinochle (sometimes pinocle, or penuchle) is a trick-taking Pinochle game typically for two, three or four players and played with a 48 card deck. Derived from the card game bezique, players score points by trick-taking and also by forming combinations of cards into melds. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Tim Carter Mark Katz Chérie Rivers Ndaliko Jocelyn Neal ©2017 Gina Bombola ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Gina Bombola: “Can’t Help Singing”: The “Modern” Opera Diva in Hollywood Film, 1930–1950 (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) Following the release of Columbia Pictures’ surprise smash hit, One Night of Love (1934), major Hollywood studios sought to cash in on the public’s burgeoning interest in films featuring opera singers. For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.
