Smoothing out the ridges

I expect by the time you read this it will be tipping it down with rain and there will be flood warnings! The recent long hot dry spell brought back memories of the drought in 1976 which was followed by floods. The new appointed minister for drought became the floods minister. Things have a habit of correcting themselves. On one of the hottest days of the year the psalm that was set was Psalm 65

10 You drench the furrows and smooth out the ridges; you soften the ground with showers and bless its increase.

11 You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty.

The psalms remind us that God provides in His own good time. Have a good Summer and bring your brolly!

August Gardening

It is very difficult not to link gardening and the weather, whatever the time of the year. This year. more than ever, there seems no let up in this very hot and dry Summer which is, as far as one can tell, likely to stretch well into August. Perhaps school holidays may bring a change. Two facts which you may find interesting. June 2018 was the driest June month since 1985, the year I began recording rainfall. Only 0.1 of an inch. In June 2009 there was very very heavy rain on 27th when in just over a two hour period 2.83 inches fell.

At least weeds at last seem to have stopped growing as has grass, so not much mowing to do. Rambler roses, these are the type that grow on new shoots each year with lots of sprays of small flowers, generally flower in late July/early August but have flowered early this year, need the flowering shoots cut off at ground level. Onions should be dry and ripe ready for harvest, make sure beans are picked as often as possible as they will soon go old and stop growing, especially if the hot weather continues.

August is the month to take cuttings of geraniums if you have some really fine ones. Ideally chose a stem about as thick as a little finger, snap off a leaf joint three or four inches below the growing point, trim off any leaves at the bottom of the cutting, leave for a day, push into pots of compost, 4 or 5 in a five inch pot, place in a shady spot and keep moist. Do water pots, larger containers and hanging baskets often do not let them dry out and if possible enjoy the hot weather if it continues.

News from Aston Sandford

Dedication of Altar Frontal, Vestments, etc

If you have ever visited Aston Sandford Church you will have seen that the altar, pulpit and lectern are dressed in beautiful Thai silk with appliquéd gold crosses and gold fringes. These magnificent pieces were worked by Betty Tuckett in the early 1980s as were the coordinating altar kneelers worked in tapestry which depict the village, Christmas and Harvest; the kneelers later won commendation in a national competition. All these lovely pieces were dedicated in a service on Friday 12th July 1985 by the Rev Robert Faulkner; it was in fact the last service the Rev Faulkner took at Aston Sandford – he was about to retire after 25 years as Vicar of – and thereafter Aston Sandford became part of the benefice of Haddenham.

But what our church did not have was a complete set of frontals, falls, markers to be changed according to the Church’s season. We are immensely grateful to a most generous donor who has funded the purchase of the outstanding pieces. These, together, appropriately, with a beautifully worked pew cushion and three kneelers, were dedicated by Canon Cavell Cavell Northam at our service on Sunday 17th June. He said:

“About 50 years ago Educationalists came up with a brilliant new idea: it was called Visual Aids. Things children could see to help them understand what was being taught. In fact Church has been using this technique for thousands of years, through the use of Pictures, Stained glass, Symbols and Vestments to teach the Faith.

“One of these is the use of Colours used at the Holy Communion Service, to mark Church’s Seasons of the Year –

- Green is the colour all around us in the trees and the fields and is the everyday colour of Church. It is used throughout the long Trinity season in the Summer; - Purple is the Penitential (saying sorry) colour and is used during the solemn seasons of Lent and Advent; - Red, the Royal Colour, is used to celebrate the feasts of Christ the King and also Palm Sunday, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem as a King riding on a donkey. Red is also the colour of blood reminding us of the Blood of the Martyrs and of Christ’s Crucifixion. Red is again the colour used on Whitsunday to remind us of the flames of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost; - White is the happy, rejoicing, colour of the Church used at Christmastide, Eastertide, Harvest & Saints Days; - Gold is the colour used at the two great Festivals of the Church, on Christmas Day and Easter Day.

______Parish News 9 August 2018

“This morning it gives me very great pleasure to dedicate the new Altar frontals, Lectern and Pulpit falls, along with Burses, Veils, Bible markers and Stoles which have been purchased for us following an extremely generous donation from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. We will now be able to use the correct colours for all our services in future. We will also dedicate a new pew cushion and kneelers which have been worked in tapestry by Alan Paterson.

Altar Frontals, Burses and Veils Let us pray. Blessed are you, Lord God of the Universe, all things come from you and are woven through with the wonder of your beauty, so that we might be drawn ever more deeply ourselves into your presence. You have set this table before us so that we might celebrate even in this world the great feast of heaven and know your presence in our very lives through the sacrament of the Holy Communion.

Bless + now we pray these Altar Frontals, Burses and Veils as a sign of the splendour of that feast and of the beauty of your presence, to your glory and to the renewing refreshment of your people, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Stoles O Lord God Almighty, Who didst command Moses, Thy servant, to see to the making of Vesture for the worship of the former Covenant, and didst inspire him with wisdom to perfect Thy wish; Vouchsafe to Bless + these Stoles to Thy Holy Service. Clothed with them, may thy Ministers be filled with the sevenfold grace of the Holy Spirit and endowed with the stole of charity, that serving Thee faithfully they may be rewarded finally with a blessed immortality. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord; Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, God, eternally. Amen.

Bible Markers, Lectern and Pulpit Falls Blessed be your name, O Lord our God, Bless + these Bible Markers, Lectern and Pulpit Falls. You are the fount and source of every blessing! You have revealed yourself to your human creation in many and diverse ways. Our memory of your revelation is maintained and reverenced in

the Scriptures proclaimed from this Lectern and Pulpit. Look with delight upon us today as we renew our commitment to read and hear You in the words of our salvation. Help us to absorb its wisdom and live its inspired truth. Encourage us with the help of the Holy Spirit to use these sacred

writings for our prayer and inspiration, for the increase of our own faith and devotion, and for the building up of your Kingdom. Through your Word may we be transformed into the very likeness of Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

Pew Cushion and Kneelers Almighty God, Giver of Comfort and Strength, Thou hast fashioned us in Thine own image and remade us by your love in Jesus Christ. We thank you for the creativity, skill and time that has been offered in the making of this pew cushion and kneelers. May they be a blessing to those who made them and to those who will use them, that in their use Thy servants may be encouraged to hear Thy voice in Worship, Readings and Prayer and be inspired to go forth and Serve Thee in their lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Letter from Aston Sandford….continued Correction:

The piece from Aston Sandford in the July magazine was inadvertently truncated at the end of the article. The correct piece should have been as follows. Please accept our apologies:

Postscript on John Dover At the end of my piece on John Dover in last month’s edition I mentioned that there was some confusion as to the date of death of his heir, John Guy Dover: it is widely believed that he died in 1909, but I had found a record suggesting he died in Great Missenden in 1929. Last month, at our Annual Churchyard Working Party, spurred on by my researches into the Dovers, a group of us decided to tackle John Dover’s neglected and overgrown grave mentioned at the beginning of that article. Imagine my thrill when hidden below decades worth of ivy growth I unearthed a hitherto unrecorded small second slab at the foot of the large one – dedicated as follows - ALSO IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN GUY DOVER WHO DIED NOV 1929 AGED 77 YEARS The month is eroded but it does appear to be an abbreviated November; all of which ties up nicely with the record of death at Great Missenden, where his widow Ada continued to live. It may be that this was a commemorative stone and that he was buried elsewhere. Ada died in 1933, and left £19,778.

Stone Open Gardens

The Church would like to thank all those who generously opened their Gardens on the 1st July, as well as all those who came to view the stunning gardens.

The afternoon was a wonderful success with over £500 being made to go towards the general day to day running of the church.

The hot weather did not deter visitors, with several walking from one end of the parish to the other to view the gardens and to enjoy the cream teas that were served at the church.

I would like to personally thank not only the garden owners but also the members of the church who all worked so hard to make this such a wonderful success.

Raymond Medhurst Churchwarden

Teddy Bear Parachute Drop and Barbeque

If you had come down to the church on July 15th you would have met a whole host of teddies, piggies, sheep and a stick man enjoying a very pleasant afternoon of parachuting from the church tower whilst their owners relaxed and enjoyed a free BBQ expertly prepared by Clive Corbould.

Thank you to all the Social Committee Members for organizing such a fun afternoon.

An A-Z OF Dinton by Andrew Wild (continued)

W is for Waldridge. Waldridge is the most southerly point within the Parish, and is almost 3 miles from Dinton village centre. There was once a mediaeval village there, but now just Waldridge Manor and a nearby farm. Dinton Fete was, for several years, held within the grounds of Waldridge Manor, by kind permission of the owners.

W is for War Memorials and War Graves. Dinton’s war memorial is situated in a corner of the churchyard, and is in the form of a cross. Ford also has a memorial close to the village crossroads. Most of the casualties relate to WW1, when the Government took the decision that it would be impractical to repatriate the bodies. Hence the vast cemeteries in France and Belgium (and elsewhere for later conflicts). There are 5 war graves in Dinton churchyard.

W is for Water. The most prominent water feature in Dinton is the River Thame, which flows very roughly from east to west in the North of the Parish. As for many country areas, there are, in addition, many ditches and streams, which ultimately drain into the River Thame. Because of the lie of the land in Dinton, many of these (e.g. the Westlington Bourne) flow in the opposite direction, i.e. west to east, before curving round near Ford, to join a stream which eventually flows to the south of Haddenham and joins the River Thame near Thame. There are few ponds; the Biggin is probably the largest and there is another just next to Pasture Farm.

W is for Wellington Bomber. On 9th January 1944, a Wellington bomber set out from Upper Heyford on a training flight for bombing practice. The starboard engine failed and the crew abandoned the aircraft which crashed into Moat Farm, Ford. One body was found in the farmyard and another at the Biggin, the other four members of the crew survived. There is a memorial to the airman at Ford crossroads. (JH)

W is for Wesleyan Chapel. Old maps show that where Staddlestones now is, at the bottom of New Road, was a Methodist (Wesleyan) Chapel.

W is for Westlington. Westlington is a bit of a mystery, which I will leave readers to ponder over. The 1885 Ordnance Survey map, clearly shows Westlington to be the whole of the settlement to the west of the area where the Village Hall now stands. And Dinton is shown as just the area around the church. And the 1922 Ordnance Survey map shows exactly the same. On top of that, we have Westlington Farm situated directly opposite the Village Hall. This evidence strongly suggests that much of what we now regard as Dinton, was once called Westlington. (Westlington is a derivation of West Dinton). I have no idea how or why things have changed – was it intentional? I would be interested to hear any views on this.

______Parish News 18 August 2018

W is for Westlington Farm. As noted above, this old, thatched, farmhouse is sited near the Village Hall and is a stone’s throw away from the 7 Stars. It is now a private residence but was a working farm into the 1970’s. Its’ cattle sheds were on the plot of land behind the brick wall in High Street.

W is for Wychert. Wychert (meaning “white earth”) is a mixture of chalk and clay, found just beneath the surface in Haddenham and in a few nearby villages, including Dinton. It is used for constructing walls and cottages, usually on a stone base – a grumpling. It has to be kept dry, so walls are tiled and cottages are usually thatched, with a large overhang.

W is for Wychert Way. The Wychert way is a 12-mile-long, waymarked, circular walk taking in Haddenham, , Cuddington, Dinton, Ford, Aston Sandford and Kingsey. There are some “links” which mean that you don’t have to walk the full 12 miles all in one go.

X is for Xylophone. The Dinton Xylophone Ensemble was an active musical group in the Parish in the 1920’s. They had a full range of instruments – bass, alto and soprano, and were led by the legendary Tim Parnham, performing concerts across the Vale. Sadly, the instruments were damaged by woodworm in 1931/2 when stored in a farmer’s barn, and they never played again.

Y is for Yew. Britain only has 3 native conifers – yew, juniper and scots pine. Yew trees can grow to a great age; Britain’s oldest tree is probably the Fortingall yew, in Scotland and this could be 9,000 years old. Yews are conifers, but don’t have cones, they have berries instead. They are often found in churchyards and are poisonous to grazing animals. There are several yews in Dinton churchyard and in some private gardens.

Z is for Zero (= nothing). I can think of nothing beginning with “Z” that is particularly pertinent to Dinton. Although some Zydeco music was once played at a Cajun concert, so perhaps that just creeps in.

Footnote There will be a short addendum in next month’s Parish Magazine, covering topics which were initially overlooked.

UPDATE ON STONE CHURCH FACILITIES

We have come a long way towards having the kitchenette/WC approved by the Diocesan Advisory Committee. The DAC’s main functions are to give advice on the architecture, archaeology, art and history of places of worship and is the first stage of the Faculty Jurisdiction, which is the Church of ’s planning permission procedure.

We cannot get any further with the application until we have resolved the problem concerning the 12th Century Norman capital in the church, which is situated next to the screen door. A capital is the top part of a stone column. This is in urgent need of repair before we can proceed, and we may have to apply for a faculty to remove part of the screen in this area, so that it can be inspected. The DAC have requested that we engage the services of a Conservator to assess the damage and estimate the cost of repair. We are now looking into this and we will keep you updated as to how this unfortunate problem is progressing.
