Although this year has thrown many obstacles our way, we feel that the “show must go on.” In response to the COVID-19 situation, this year will look a little different. For the safety of our members and our customers, this year will be an online pre-order only sale. Our mission stays the same: to support our community’s green spaces, and to educate our community in the areas of gardening, horticulture, conservation, and related topics. GCH members serve as volunteers, and our profits from the Bulb Mart are given back to WELCOME the community in support of our mission. In the last fifteen years, we have given back over $3.5 million in grants to the community! The Garden Club of Houston’s first Plant Sale was held in 1942, on the steps of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with plants dug from members’ gardens. Plants propagated from our own members’ yards will be available again this year as well as plants and bulbs sourced from near and far that are unique, interesting, and well suited for area gardens. -

The Crocosmia forum was created by the RHS bulb plant committee to assess Crocosmia in 2016. Those on the forum were: Lady Christine Skelmersdale (Chairperson), Mr Bob Brown, Mr Jamie Blake, Mrs Elizabeth MacGregor, Mr Mark Fox, Mr Mark Walsh and Mr John Foley to assess a total of 73 Crocosmia cultivars. It was judged that the forum made up from the RHS Bulb committee, members of the RHS Herbaceous Committee, the National collection holder and nursery specialists had sufficient and comprehensive knowledge to arrive at a sound conclusion on the cultivars awarded. Criteria for voting included: Be available to the public Must be of outstanding excellence for garden decoration or use Good constitution Not require highly specialist growing conditions or care Not be particularly susceptible to any pest or disease Stable in form and colour The Panel recommended the Society's AWARD OF GARDEN MERIT to: Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Babylon’ Hardiness rating: H4 Description: Large deep orange flowers with a paler centre. -

([email protected]) ABSTRACT The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will allow observations with a unique combination of spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution for the study of outer planet satellites within our Solar System. We highlight the infrared spectroscopy of icy moons and temporal changes on geologically active satellites as two particularly valuable avenues of scientific inquiry. While some care must be taken to avoid saturation issues, JWST has observation modes that should provide excellent infrared data for such studies. KEYWORDS Solar System Astronomical Techniques 1. ABSTRACT Canna indica L. is a tropical herb belonging to the family Cannaceae. It has been widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many complains. The phytochemical analysis of Canna indica showed that it contained various phytochemicals including alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, oils, steroids, tannins, saponins, anthocyanin pigments, phlobatinins and many other chemical compounds. The pharmacological studies showed that this plant exerted antibacterial, antiviral anthelmintic, molluscicidal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic immunmodulatory, antioxidant, cytotoxic, hemostatic, hepatoprotective, anti diarrheal and other effects. This review deals with highlight the chemical constituents and the pharmacological effects of Canna indica. -

INTRODUCTION The method was fully validated for the determination of aconitine from whole blood samples and applied in two cases of fatal poisoning. Plants of the genus Aconitum L (family of Ranunculaceae) are known to be among the most toxic plants of the Northern Hemisphere and are widespread across Europe, Northern Asia and North America. Two plants from this genus are of particular importance: the blue-blooded Aconitum napellus L. (monkshood) which is cultivated as an ornamental plant in Europe and the yellow-blooded Aconitum vulparia Reich. (wolfsbane) which is commonly used in Asian herbal medicine1 (Figure 1). Many of the traditional Asian medicine preparations utilise both the aconite tubers and their processed products for their pharmaceutical properties, which include anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cardio- Figure 1: Aconitum napellus (monkshood) (A) and tonic effects2-4. (Cannaceae), is used both as medicine and food. Traditionally, various parts of C. indica are exploited to treat blood pressure, dropsy, fever, inflammatory diseases etc. However, till date there is no reliable micropropagation protocol for C. indica. We present here a regeneration technique of C. indica with banana micropropagation medium (BM). BM supplemented with 3% sucrose, 0.7% agar, −1 and 0.17% NH4NO3 and different plant growth regulators like BAP (2 mg·L ) and NAA (0.5 mg·L−1) was found to be effective in inducing callus in C. indica. BM with BAP (2 mg·L−1) was ideal for somatic embryogenesis and plantlet regeneration. After a period of 3 months, regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred to the field conditions. Appearance of somaclonal variation among the regenerated plants is a common problem which could be assessed by DNA fingerprinting. -

Pitjev Received: 13 December 2017 / Accepted: 24 August 2018 The final publication ia available at Springer via http://doi.org/10.1007/s10569-018-9853-5 Abstract The Kuiper belt includes tens of thousands of large bodies and millions of smaller objects. The main part of the belt objects is located in the annular zone between 39.4 au and 47.8 au from the Sun, the boundaries correspond to the average distances for orbital resonances 3:2 and 2:1 with the motion of Neptune. One-dimensional, two-dimensional, and discrete rings to model the total gravitational attraction of numerous belt objects are consid- ered. The discrete rotating model most correctly reflects the real interaction of bodies in the Solar system. The masses of the model rings were determined within EPM2017—the new version of ephemerides of planets and the Moon at IAA RAS—by fitting spacecraft ranging observations. The total mass of the Kuiper belt was calculated as the sum of the masses of the 31 largest trans-neptunian objects directly included in the simultaneous integration and the estimated mass of the model of the discrete ring of TNO. The total mass −2 is (1.97 ± 0.30) · 10 m⊕. The gravitational influence of the Kuiper belt on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune exceeds at times the attraction of the hypothetical 9th planet with a mass of ∼ 10 m⊕ at the distances assumed for it. -
The New Kirstenbosch Bulb Terrace
- Growing indigenous Working with the seasons The new Kirstenbosch Bulb Terrace by Graham Duncan, Kirstenbosch Heavy winter rains, inadequately drained soils and insufficient winter light lev els experienced in many parts of Kirstenbosch preclude the display of a wide vari ety of our spectacular wealth of winter-growing bulbous plants in the garden itself. In addition, the depredations of molerats, and more importantly, marauding por cupines place further constraints on bulbs that can be displayed to the public. For these reasons the more fastidious species are cultivated under cover in the Kirstenbosch bulb nursery and displayed in containers, in season, inside the Kay Bergh Bulb House of the Botanical Society Conservatory. Although bulbous plants that are able to stand up to the rigours of general gar den cultivation are displayed in many parts of the garden, no section is specifical ly dedicated to bulbs. However, with the recent completion of the Centre for Home Gardening, an area known as the Bulb Terrace has been specifically provided for the display of both winter- and summer-growing bulbs. We hope these displays will draw attention to the many bulbous species suitable for home gardens. Passing through the Centre for Home Gardening towards the garden, the Bulb Terrace comprises eight broadly rectangular beds on either side of the sloping main bricked walkway adjacent to the new Kirstenbosch Tearoom. Summary An assessment of safety considerations with respect to human usage of complementary medicine preparations made from the substance Aconite (any part of the plant Aconitum napella, otherwise known as Monkshood), has been undertaken. The available toxicological data was reviewed, and levels of intake of the known toxic constituents, the alkaloids aconitine, mesaconitine and jesaconitine, known to be associated with adverse effects and possible fatality in humans, were determined. From this assessment, concentration levels of the known toxic alkaloids below which no toxic effects would normally be associated with their internal ingestion or use, was determined. Levels of ingestion of these toxic components which could normally be deemed as completely safe, were then ascertained. This assessment was then applied to an evaluation of homoeopathic Aconite-containing preparations available in the marketplace, to select ‘cut off points’ below which general sales classification is deemed appropriate. These calculations were based upon both concentration levels of the toxic alkaloids, as well as the maximum recommended pack size of preparations containing them. Aconite: an introduction Aconite (a preparation made from either the roots or herb of the European shrub Aconitum napellus, or other Aconitum species ), has long been used both as a traditional herbal medicine as well as a homoeopathic remedy. -
