feast of st teresa of calcutta 5 September: Feast of Teresa of Calcutta. Saint Teresa was born in 1910 as Agnes Bojaxhiu into a Catholic family in Yugoslavia. Her mother told her stories of , who inspired her greatly. At the age of 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin and took the name Teresa, in honor of St. Thérese of Lisieux and St. Teresa of Avila. She was sent to teach school in Calcutta, India. She taught until 1946, when she experienced a “call within a call.” She felt called to be God’s love in action: to serve the sick, dying, hun- gry and homeless while living among them. She received permission to leave the convent and sought medical training. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity (an order of religious women). ’s mission was simple and profound. She said: “We are put on this earth to do something beautiful for God.” The Missionaries of Charity are known for helping the poorest of the poor and loving the most unlovable. Today, they have more than 800 missions with over 5,000 religious sisters. Mother Teresa was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She died in 1997, having spent her life in the service of others. She was beatified in 2003. The process leading to her beautification was the shortest in modern history (Pope Saint John Paul II advanced the cause immediately upon her death). She was named a saint in 2015. A tiny nun with the biggest heart had changed the world. Some ways to celebrate at home: • Following St. Teresa’s example, pick a family action item from the following: What can we do to feed someone who is hungry? To love someone who is lonely? To care for someone who is sick? • Watch these St. Teresa videos available for free to our parish on FORMED • Marigolds are a symbol of celebration in India. Making your own out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners is a perfect feast day craft. Click here! • “Holy Heroes” audio CDs are excellent for teaching children about the . They have one on Saint Teresa here. • Enjoy an Indian-themed dinner in honor of Mother Teresa. You could opt for an Indian food restaurant or you could make your own Indian meal at home! Try chicken tikka masala with rice and naan bread (recipe idea). Enjoy drinking chai tea with milk and honey; mango lemonade; or pineapple coconut water. Hummus with naan and veggies will make a perfect snack or appetizer. Make blue and white cupcakes for dessert in honor of the habit St. Teresa chose to wear. • Post a favorite quote of Mother Teresa in a visible spot. Here are a few favorites: “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” “Don’t search for God in faraway lands. He is not there. He is close to you. He is with you. Just keep that lamp burn- ing, and you will always see him.” “Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.”

• Fr Smith highly encourages postponing the start of regular events until at least mid-September • Every ministry who wishes to have an event must submit an email to Fr Smith & Phil Head (cc: Maria Rauch) the plan they have to clean and sanitize every space used by them before anyone goes home, including the names and contact numbers of the volunteers who will make this happen. That com- munication must be received before any single event is put on the calendar. • Wearing masks and social distancing is encouraged at every event. If Fr Smith & Phil Head are not con- vinced this has been followed, we reserve the right to shut down an event even in the middle of it. • Ministry events should be communicated 3 weeks prior to the event date. Those ministry events happen- ing online (or for those wishing to have an event hosted online via Zoom by the parish) should contact Kylee Heap. We highly encourage online events to reach parishioners who are not yet returning to Mass. • Guidelines are subject to change!
