Independent of age or social status, any woman can become a mother for priests. This type of motherhood is not only for mothers of families, but is just as possible for an unmarried girl, a widow, or for someone who is ill. It is especially perti- nent for and religious sisters who have given their lives entirely to God for the sanctification of others. John Paul II even thanked a child for her motherly help: “I also express my gratitude to Bl. Jacinta for the sacrifices and prayers of- fered for the Holy Father, whom she saw suffering greatly.”(13 May 2000)

Every priest has a birth mother, and often she is a spiritual mother for her children as well. For example, Giuseppe Sarto, the future Pius X, visited his 70-year-old mother after being ordained a bishop. She kissed her son’s ring and, sud- denly pensive, pointed out her own simple silver wedding band saying, “Yes, Giuseppe, you would not be wearing that ring if I had not first worn mine.” Pope St. Pius X rightfully confirms his experience that, “Every vocation to the priesthood comes from the heart of God, but it goes through the heart of a mother!”

One sees this particularly well in the life of St. Monica. Augus- PRAYER TO OFFER tine, who lost his faith at the age of 19 while studying in Car- thage, later wrote in his famous “Confessions” regarding his COMMUNION FOR PRIESTS mother: “For love of me, she cried more tears than a mother would over the bodily death of her son. Nine years passed in Heavenly Father, for the glory which I wallowed in the slime of that deep pit and the dark- ness of falsehood. Yet that pious widow desisted not all the of Your Holy Name, we offer hours of her supplications, to bewail my case unto Thee where You Jesus, the Incarnate Word, her prayers entered into Thy presence.” whom we have received in the

MATERNIDAD ESPIRITUAL

Congregatio Pro Cleris ARCHBISHOP’S CATHOLIC APPEAL

Each year St. Matthew parishioners have an opportunity to show our support for Archbishop Sample by giving to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal (ACA). The ACA supports the Archdiocese's ministries in west- ern Oregon - including pastoral ministries and care for the priesthood.

Pastoral ministries spread the word of Jesus to all people in every step of their spiritual journey. Pastoral ministers actively bring the love of God into people's lives by providing supportive care to those who are sick or suffering, people with disabilities, people who are deaf, and those in prison. Parishes, ethnic vicariates and campus min- istries throughout western Oregon also benefit from the ACA.

The ACA also provides for the Holy Orders by caring for retired priests, educating the next generation of priests, and supporting the permanent diaconate.

Our parish goal is $91,424. If you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please fill out a commitment card located on the table as you enter the Church and mail it directly to the Pastoral Center in the enve- lope attached to the commitment card. You may also go directly to https://advance.archdpdx.org/ aboutaca to give online. We would like 100% participation in showing our support of Archbishop Sam- ple and our in western Oregon. Thank you and may God continue to bless the Archdio- cese of Portland.

THE PRIESTHOOD OF MARY

It is clear and evident that God wanted to grant Mary a special and unique participation in the priesthood of Jesus and within the entire mystery of our salvation; she was chosen to give life to the Divine Word, to give him the human nature by which he could carry out his messianic ministry through his redemptive sacrifice.

The Son was not given to Mary so that she could possess him, but rather so that she could give him to us. When her Son was just forty days old, she went to the temple in Jerusalem to fulfill the requirement of the law that God had given to his people through : “It is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every first-born male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord’” (Lk 2:23).

All Jewish women would go to the temple to offer their first-born sons to God. It was a beautiful rite, and they would undoubtedly carry it out in a heartfelt manner. But in the case of Mary, it was rather differ- ent. She who had conceived this Son by the work of the Holy Spirit, was filled with the Holy Spirit and in the light of “the One who spoke through the prophets,” began to grasp that mystery surrounding her ex- traordinary maternity and the destiny of the fruit of her womb. “Mary kept all these things in her heart” (Lk 2:51).

Thus we see the Mother taking on her priestly role, offering to God what is truly hers, flesh of her flesh and blood of her blood, son of her womb and of her heart.

She offered the Lamb of God, the Holy Victim, the perfect offering, the same way all priests do today be- fore the altar, but with a much greater right to do so because the offering is an integral part of her. And her offering was more perfect because the holiness of her soul and the immensity of her love were so superior.

Jesus is our life and Mary gave him to us. Mary gave us life in Jesus, and one who gives life is a mother. Mary is our mother because God chose to associate her intimately with the mystery of our “new birth in Christ.” Illumined by the Holy Spirit, she became more and more aware of this call to universal maternity. She accepted her years in solitude on earth in order to be, the principal example of faith, love, and hu- mility among Christ’s disciples, as well as the faithful witness of all that pertains to Jesus.

Just as the glorified Jesus remains forever as the Eternal High Priest, so also Mary, taken up into heaven, participates with greater rights than anyone else in that joyful , which takes place in that sub- lime temple where the blessed dwell forever.

That is why those of us here on earth, who offer Christ under the species of bread to the Father, unite ourselves with the eternal “presentation” by which Mary offers her first born to God, not in the temple of Jerusalem, but in the definitive temple where the resplendent presence of God is manifested.

Love for Sacred Scripture

The distinctive feature of ’s spirituality was undoubtedly his passionate love for the word of God en- trusted to the Church in sacred Scripture. All the Doctors of the Church – particularly those of the early Christian era – drew the content of their teaching explicitly from the Bible. Yet Jerome did so in a more systematic and distinctive way. Exegetes in recent times have come to appreciate the narrative and poetic genius of the Bible and its great expressive quality. Jerome instead empha- sized in sacred Scripture the humble character of God’s , set down in the rough and almost primitive cadences of the Hebrew language in comparison to the refinement of Ciceronian .

He devoted himself to the study of sacred Scripture not for aesthetic reasons, but – as is well known – only be- cause Scripture had led him to know Christ. Indeed, ig- norance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.
