American Helvetia Philatelic Society VOL. XXV, NUMBER 3 MAY 1999 American Helvetia Philatelic Society Chinese-Swiss Joint Issue by David E. Durham Intercountry joint issues have become frequent, but this one caught my attention especially. From Switzerland is the view of Lake Geneva ; from China is a scene of "Slender West Lake" not far from Shanghai . On the Swiss side is the familiar Chillon Castle, occupied since the bronze age as a good military site and mostl y developed as a castle during the 11th and 12th centuries ; and on the Chinese side are one or two of th e magnificent pagodas which are even older than Chillon. Linking the two sides is Bridge 24 - 24 meters long, 2 .4 meters wide, with 24 jade balusters and with 24 steps on each end . This beautiful issue is the joint creation of artists Xu Yan Bo and Bernadette Baltis . The Swiss inscription s are only in French, as Chillon is in the French part of the country .     Wichtigste Lebensdaten von Oskar Marcus «Oski» BIDER (1891–1919)1 (Verfasser:2 Johannes Dettwiler-Riesen, 3600 Thun – Mai 2019) Über Oskar Marcus Bider wurde eine reichhaltige Dokumentation in Büchern und aviatikhistorischen Artikeln veröffentlicht. He believes the "P.I.P. Ferney" mark is a handstamp of the Fischer Post. It is overstruck (or understruck?) by a feint PsP$ boxed cancel, possibly. Also an octagonal T.3. and a double circle September 27 1822 (Paris receiver?) and a mystery circle with a line across. There is a manuscript 8 on the front and also on the reverse, -plus a small 28 at the top left hand front. Does the diagonal line through the address have any significance? Would readers like to comment possibly? John enclosed a copy of the contents which is an interesting view on life in 1822. The writer Jean-Jaques-Caton Chanviere was a Swiss theologian, protestant pasteur, born and died in Geneva. In 1816 he was given the chair of theology, dogmatic and moral which he occupied _IIntAl 1864.. Ric wrote extensively as is shown by the letter addressed to John Bowring, who was a philologist and trav- eller, spoke more than 100 languages and was a disciple•öf"Jeremy Bentham, hinself a disciple of Hobbes and Helvetius: Now look that lot up in your encyclopaedia Who else is sitting on a letter sent by someone famous and they have never read the contents? Sie befassen sich hauptsächlich mit dem "Aviatiker" Bider. In diesem Kapitel geht es darum, neben dem Aviatiker auch den Menschen Oskar Bider und seine Verbundenheit mit seiner Familie und mit Langenbruck darzustellen. Dies geschieht aufgrund eines regen Briefverkehrs, den Bider mit seinem Grossvater in Langenbruck und mit Onkel und Tante in Liestal geführt hat. * * * * * Vater und Mutter des Fliegers mit ihren Kindern. Oskar im Hintergrund Die Familie Die Bider stammen ursprünglich aus Bärenwil, wo sie bis ins 18. Jahrhundert als Landwirte tätig gewesen waren. Ihre Namen wurden zu jener Zeit als Bider, Bieder, Biedert, Biderd und Biderb geschrieben. 1820 einigten sich die Biderfamilien darauf, sich fortan Bider zu schreiben. Oskar Biders Vater, Jakob Bider, hatte 1889 Frieda Marie Glur von Wynau geheiratet. Frieda war die Tochter des Langenbrucker Lehrers Albert Glur, der in den Jahren 1866-1904 an der Dorfschule unterrichtete. Albert Glur erhielt 1885 für seine Verdienste um die Gemeinde das Bürgerrecht. Er war der Grossvater der drei Bider-Kinder Georg, Oskar und Helen. Dieser Umstand wirkte sich nach dem frühen Tod der Mutter für die Kinder segensreich aus. Vater Jakob war, wie seine Vorfahren, ein geschickter Händler und Kaufmann, und er hatte es auch zu einem gewissen Wohlstand gebracht. Ihm gehörte das Haus Nr. 4 an der heutigen Oskar Biderstrasse, ferner die Flieger-Leutnant Oskar Bider, der vorher Kav.Kpl. gewesen war Bärenmatte samt Scheune - der Ort, wo heute die Skilift-Station steht - und das Haus an der Hauptstrasse, wo er mit seiner Familie wohnte.
