Johnson Doctor of Philosophy in German Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Anton Kaes, Chair This dissertation explores the relationship between domestic interiors and urban exteriors in Weimar literature and film. Interiors have been neglected in scholarship about Weimar Großstadtliteratur (big-city literature); scholars have focused on the street scene and the psychological effects of industrial capitalism, urbanization, and commodification. While many architecture and design theorists of the time engaged with interiors as part of a plan to modernize and thus create a new city—and society—the interiors they imagined for the Neues Wohnen (New Dwelling) are conspicuously absent from contemporary novels and films. One finds instead interiors like those of the previous century. I argue that the persistence of nineteenth-century interiors in novels and films about Weimar Berlin uncovers the tensions inherent in modern city living. The expectation of what it was like to “live” in the fictional home differs from the New Dwelling of “real- world” homes. Despite their differences, both ways of dealing with modernity seek understanding and control of the urban environment. -

This dissertation explores the musical relationship between these two troubled countries and aims to explain the similarities and differences in their approaches to collective singing. The discussion of the very complex and problematic relationship between the German left and the Soviet government sets the framework for the analysis of music. Beginning in late 1920s, as a result of Stalin’s abandonment of the international revolutionary cause, the divergences between the policies of the Soviet government and utopian aims of the German communist party can be traced in the musical propaganda of both countries. -

Wichtigste Lebensdaten von Oskar Marcus «Oski» BIDER (1891–1919)1 (Verfasser:2 Johannes Dettwiler-Riesen, 3600 Thun – Mai 2019) Über Oskar Marcus Bider wurde eine reichhaltige Dokumentation in Büchern und aviatikhistorischen Artikeln veröffentlicht. Sie werden hier nicht im Einzelnen vorgestellt. Hingegen wird eine erweiterte Liste über wichtige Lebensdaten Biders vorgestellt (ohne Gewähr). Weiter wird auf einige bisher wenig bekannte Aspekte in seinem ereignisreichen Leben hingewiesen («Sozialhistorisches»). Das meiste da- von wurde vom Verfasser im Vorfeld zum Jubiläumsjahr 2013 von Biders Alpenflug (1913) zusam- mengetragen (Dorffest Ende Juni in Langenbruck BL). Inzwischen ist vieles auf einer privaten Website der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht worden (vgl. « oskar-bider-archiv.ch »). 1 Oskars Jugendzeit 1891: • 12. Editor: Peter Hobbs, Six Tyning End, Widcombe Hill, Bath BA2 6AN Tel: 01 225-31 09 71 No. 1 January 2003 INTERESTING ENTIRE LETTER FROM FAMOUS SWISS THEOLOGIAN J-J-C Chanviere (1783-1871) John Millener acquired this 1822 item from Geneva with a nice "P,7_P,/FERNEY" hard- stamp in red and various other marks on an entire to Paris. He believes the "P.I.P. Ferney" mark is a handstamp of the Fischer Post. It is overstruck (or understruck?) by a feint PsP$ boxed cancel, possibly. Also an octagonal T.3. and a double circle September 27 1822 (Paris receiver?) and a mystery circle with a line across. There is a manuscript 8 on the front and also on the reverse, -plus a small 28 at the top left hand front. Does the diagonal line through the address have any significance? Would readers like to comment possibly? John enclosed a copy of the contents which is an interesting view on life in 1822. The writer Jean-Jaques-Caton Chanviere was a Swiss theologian, protestant pasteur, born and died in Geneva. In 1816 he was given the chair of theology, dogmatic and moral which he occupied _IIntAl 1864.. Ric wrote extensively as is shown by the letter addressed to John Bowring, who was a philologist and trav- eller, spoke more than 100 languages and was a disciple•öf"Jeremy Bentham, hinself a disciple of Hobbes and Helvetius: Now look that lot up in your encyclopaedia Who else is sitting on a letter sent by someone famous and they have never read the contents? Die bisher solitären Veranstaltungen, die während der Langen Nacht der Museen am jeweils letzten Samstag im August stattfanden, sind nun eingebettet in ein umfangreiches Monatsprogramm. So wird die Reihe KINEMATOGRAFIE HEUTE: PHILIPPINEN vom 7. bis 25. August 13 Filme des Neuen Philippinischen Kinos präsentieren, darunter mehrere Produktionen, die zuvor in Berlin noch nicht gezeigt wurden. Die ersten drei Wochen im Juni stehen hingegen ganz im Zeichen der Retrospektive CINEROMANI – POETIK UND POLITIK, die Roma-Filme in einem filmhistorischen Überblick vorstellt, und im Juli dominiert das Werk Slatan Dudows, eines der wichtigsten kommunistischen Filmemacher, den Spielplan des Zeughauskinos. Dazwischen finden sich filmhistorische Kostbarkeiten wie zum Beispiel die Reisewerbefilme, die wir am 27. und 28. Juni zeigen werden; die seltenen sowjetischen Dokumentar- filme mit Aufnahmen aus den Gulags (25., 29. und 30. Juni) oder die deut- schen Kultur- und Werbefilme aus den 1940er Jahren, die im Rahmen von BERLIN.DOKUMENT gezeigt werden. Wir wünschen Ihnen einen abwechs- lungsreichen Kinosommer! Ihr Zeughauskino 2 1813 – AUF DEM SCHLACHTFELD BEI LEIPZIG Die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig brachte am 19. Oktober 1813 nicht nur den Sieg der Verbündeten Österreich, Preußen, Russland und Schweden über Napoleon. Sie war mit über 500.000 Soldaten sowie mehr als 120.000 Toten und Verwundeten auch eine der größten und blutigsten Schlachten der europäischen Geschichte. Anlässlich des 200. Jahrestags der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig präsentiert das Deutsche Historische Museum die Ausstellung 1813 – AUF DEM SCHLACHT- FELD BEI LEIPZIG, die auch den historischen Kontext rund um die Napoleonischen Kriege und die Befreiungskriege beleuchtet.
