Acknowledgments This thesis was born from my desire to read more and look for the feminine voice—even the one attributed to women by men. True to the motivation that originated this three-year project— simply wanting to learn—I have found more satisfaction in the search than in the accomplishment. The preparatory research for this thesis was extensive, and the topic took form as I discovered texts and the authors’ stories. I am fortunate to have a strong committee: Dr. Diana Dominguez, an authority in Medieval literature, and Dr. James Frost and Dr. Lyon Rathbun, among some of the most capable experts and educators in Rhetorical Theory. In addition, Dr. Bobbette Morgan, a champion of education, served as the Graduate Faculty Representative given that my thesis proposes an option for further study in this discipline. When I came to the university with a twenty-two year-old degree in business from UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico), having been out of the work force for a little less than that, and the simple but genuine ambition to learn, Dr. Dominguez believed in the essence of my drive. She guided me through the process of admissions and recommended me to Dr. James Frost to work as a graduate assistant when I expressed my intention of having an unabridged educational experience. Dr. Frost gave me the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom by placing me under the supervision of Dr. John Foreman, Dr. Therese Gallegos, and Ms. Ela Newman, who showed me their solid commitment to education, their irreproachable work ethic, and their passion for English. Abstract This study demonstrates how The Lais of Marie de France (12th c.) by Marie de France, The Mirror of Simple Souls (14th c.) by Marguerite Porete, and Christine de Pizan’s The Book of City of Ladies (15th c.) serve as the three progressive steps in the transformation of the rhetorical theory and the feminine literary voice, redefining woman from the idea of inferior entity written by men over centuries into the concept of an intellectual and virtuous female human being. The development of a strong feminine literary voice starts as de France feminizes the masculine language she borrows from masculine oral tradition to write narrative poetry, enriched with a feminine perspective. A century later, Porete assumes solely feminine language—through the voice of a female soul that she makes available to the male soul—in a theological treatise that annuls the role of the Church to attain spiritual purity during this life. Subsequently, Pizan, in the fifteenth century, writes the first directly-stated defense for womankind, applying feminist literary criticism to important paternalistic texts, assuming an exclusively feminine voice, and providing a reinterpretation of history and mythology. The first chapter of this thesis discusses the historical development of the concept of woman written by men, including a brief account of Sappho’s literary merit as the last of a group of women who produced literature before the fifth century B.C.E.     THE QUEEN OF TROUBADOURS GOES TO ENGLAND: ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE AND 12TH CENTURY ANGLO-NORMAN LITERARY MILIEU EUGENIO M. OLIVARES MERINO Universidad de Jaén The purpose of the present paper is to cast some light on the role played by Eleanor of Aquitaine in the development of Anglo-Norman literature at the time when she was Queen of England (1155-1204). Although her importance in the growth of courtly love literature in France has been sufficiently stated, little attention has been paid to her patronising activities in England. My contribution provides a new portrait of the Queen of Troubadours, also as a promoter of Anglo-Norman literature: many were the authors, both French and English, who might have written under her royal patronage during the second half of the 12th century. Starting with Rita Lejeune’s seminal work (1954) on the Queen’s literary role, I have gathered scattered information from different sources: approaches to Anglo-Norman literature, Eleanor’s biographies and studies in Arthurian Romance. Nevertheless, mine is not a mere systematization of available data, for both in the light of new discoveries and by contrasting existing information, I have enlarged agreed conclusions and proposed new topics for research and discussion. The year 2004 marked the 800th anniversary of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s death. An exhibition was held at the Abbey of Fontevraud (France), and a long list of books has been published (or re-edited) about the most famous queen of the Middle Ages during these last six years. 1 Starting with R. The succinct, poignant formulation of an idea has commonly achieved its purpose very effectively in many different life situations, and this in all cultures. Those texts, whether proverbs, aphorisms, epigrams, riddles, memorial verses, and the like are still with us today, but in recent years the interest in and familiarity with them seems to have faded, at least in the public. Only a few decades ago, it was very normal for students or other individuals to have memorized many of such short statements and to know how to apply them to their own lives. Many of them were regarded so highly that they populated the back pages of ordinary kitchen calendars and other publications for easy and public consumption. In foreign language classes, it was standard practice to work with some of those short texts, but today they often seem to be too conservative, naive, meaningless, and hence to be virtually irrelevant because of their putatively overly traditional, perhaps outdated values.1 In fact, they seem to be belittled today and hardly enjoy the respect they really deserve.

    The Influence of Marie de France and Chretien de Troyes in Medieval Romance and Story-Telling Patricia Green Bellaire High School INTRODUCTION Medieval Literature and History in the High School Classroom Teaching medieval literature and history to high school students is a challenge since it is important to make the subject matter relevant to the students’ lives, many of whom think that yesterday is history. Themes and stories can spark interesting class discussions. This curriculum unit can be used in the English or social studies classroom. This unit is especially conducive for teaching cross-curricular units between the two departments. Arthurian legends are taught freshman, sophomore and senior years, so this unit can be used for several preps. Middle and elementary school teachers can modify or simplify the lessons to suit their students. The four-fold method of interpreting a story can give students insight into how medieval people thought. It is customary to use one’s own experiences to interpret a work; however, the realization that medieval people did not think the same way that people in the twenty-first century do can be a valuable lesson in a culturally diverse classroom. Viewing the world through another’s perspective can be enlightening and interesting to the high school students. The British versions of the Arthurian romances are usually taught to high school students. This curriculum unit concentrates on the French writers. The unit also includes the comparison of women’s and men’s perspectives on similar stories in the stories by Marie de France and Chretien de Troyes. The curriculum unit emphasizes the King Arthur Legends from a female viewpoint in the Lais of Marie de France and the male point of view in Arthurian Romances by Chretien de Troyes.

ABSTRACT This thesis charts the history of the cult of St Æthelthryth of Ely, arguing that its longevity and geographical extent were determined by the malleability of her character, as narrated within the hagiographical texts of her life, and the continued promotion of her shrine by parties interested in utilising her saintly power to achieve their goals. Arranged chronologically and divided into five distinct periods, the thesis demonstrates that this symbiotic relationship was key in maintaining and elongating the life of the cult. Employing digital humanities tools to analyse textual, archaeological, material, cartographic, and documentary sources covering the cult’s eight-hundred-year history, the study charts its development firstly within East Anglia, and subsequently across the whole country, and internationally.

Mª Victoria Casado Varela Tutora: Tamara Pérez Fernández 2014-2015 ABSTRACT Saint Æthelthryth of Ely (c. 630-679) was one of the most popular saints in Anglo-Saxon England. She experienced a wide range of vital circumstances as a woman, thus providing us with an extraordinary opportunity to study the different roles reserved for Anglo-Saxon women such as those of virgin, wife, queen and abbess. This dissertation provides, in the first place, a general overview of several of the most relevant Anglo-Saxon female roles. Secondly, this dissertation explores how her figure is portrayed in several representative medieval texts, and whether Saint Æthelthryth submited or challenged social expectations in terms of the aforementioned roles. Afterwards, a comparative analysis of Saint Æthelthryth’s portrayals in all those texts is provided. This comparison allows us to conclude whether there were any changes in the depiction of the saint’s figure throughout the centuries and to see the causes underlying that shift.
