When, free from every worry, from all business, I shall spend all my moments by your side, to have nothing to do but to love you.” -A love letter from Napoleon Bonaparte to his wife Josephine de Beauharnais, 1796 For Autumn Winter 2021 Stephen Jones presents his love affair with France through hats. ‘French Kiss’ is a romance beginning almost 40 years ago, when Stephen began commuting between London and Paris, collaborating with the most incroyable of French designers; Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaïa. Stephen fondly remembers his parties at the legendary clubs Le Palace and the Nouvelle Eve, where his hats became the lingua franca of the 80’s. Furthermore, in September 2021 Stephen marks ¼ of a century of being the Directeur Creation Chapeau at Christian Dior in Paris. The Model Millinery collection illustrate chapters of this narrative of love; French savoir-faire, Parisian chic, and the allure of the boudoir; From a deconstructed ‘Napoleonette’ felt bicorne and ‘Bibi’, an haute couture velvet croissant, to ‘French Kiss’, a cocktail hat of silken lips and whirling tongues. The Miss Jones and JonesBoy hats encapsulate French je ne sais quoi, from twinkling berets perfectly angled to kiss under the Eiffel tower, to trilbies sprinkled with raindrops ready for a louche promenade in the Jardin de Tuileries. ‘‘French Chic is wearing black.     THE EVOLUTION OF ‘IMMERSIVE’ EXHIBTIONS AT THE V&A MUSEUM, LONDON – 2008-2021 By Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh 1. Introduction GCDN members have expressed interest in the potential of ‘immersive’ exhibitions and related ‘experiences’ as programmatic elements that can meet their ambitions for broadening the base of their audiences. Audience analysis does demonstrate that these ‘experiences’ offer the opportunity of a cost-effective option with the ability to attract larger and more diverse audiences. As a result, there is particular curiosity about whether there is a basic underlying methodology, which can, however, create varied outputs that are faithful to the character and mission of their own districts. A comprehensive study of immersive exhibitions would require a book, so, as a starting point, this review examines the experience of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London – where we and colleagues have curated a series of immersive exhibitions over the last fifteen years. It stresses this was an evolutionary journey where skills, opportunities and confidence built up over time. However, the growth of a (semi-) commercial immersive exhibition market over this period means that GCDN members may have the opportunity of short circuiting such a process by connecting to an increasing number of ‘off the peg’ products, systems and creators in the post-Covid world. Sections 2, 3 and 4 trace the evolution as it happened, not simply as a matter of record but also to illustrate the interplay of opportunities, technology, sponsorship and other factors that impacted what was produced. Skira 2010) On the 26th of May 2011, Museo Salvatore Ferragamo will inaugurate a new exhibition and museum layout in Florence’s historic Palazzo Spini Feroni, the brand’s headquarters since 1938. The first two rooms of the museum will be devoted to the history and work of Salvatore Ferragamo, with a rotating display of his most creative women’s shoes, styles that best reflect his work, in order to satiate the curiosity of the many Ferragamo fans and lovers of women’s shoes. The remaining rooms will host the exhibitions organised by the museum, covering a plethora of new aspects with one common denomi- nator: taking inspiration from the story of Ferragamo and his celebrated shoes. SALVATORE FERRAGAMO: INSPIRATION AND VISION. THE WORKS ON DISPLAY This project is the most complex ever to be undertaken by Museo Salvatore Ferragamo. ABSTRACT This study utilized in-depth interviews with curators of fashion and dress departments at large-scale museums in the United States and the United Kingdom to further explore the methods employed by curators of fashion and dress exhibitions. The objectives were to understand the various types of fashion and dress exhibitions and the goals of the curator responsible for the exhibitions; to understand the developmental process of dress and fashion exhibitions through the viewpoint of fashion and dress curators; and to understand the recent history of curatorial work within fashion and dress departments at various English and American museums.     Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones 24 February – 10 May 2009 Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones is a collaboration between the V&A and one of the world’s foremost hat designers, Stephen Jones. The exhibition will display more than 300 hats chosen with the expert eye of a milliner. On display will be hats ranging from an Egyptian Anubis mask dating from 600BC to a 1950s Balenciaga hat and couture creations by Jones and his contemporaries. To show the universal appeal and delight of wearing hats, Jones has included a wide variety of styles including top hats, berets and a child’s plastic tiara. Displayed in a magical, box-hedged, Baroque garden setting, Hats an Anthology will be the V&A’s first exhibition devoted to hats, with many pieces from its extensive hat collection on display for the first time. Inspiration , the first section of the exhibition, will open with Prince Albert’s top hat and Queen Victoria’s bonnet, and looks at how the past has inspired countless designers. It will show historic and contemporary interpretations of hat styles such as the tricorn, bowler, baseball cap, bonnet, skull cap and many more. It will also look at common themes explored by milliners such as exoticism, modernism and the natural world. Creation will show how hats are made and the traditions, innovations and practices at the heart of millinery. This area will be set up like a milliner’s workroom with patterns, sketches, materials and millinery blocks. The Salon will reflect the milliner’s public showcase, featuring spectacular hats that show the craft at its sartorial best.
