Ever since I was a little boy I have been a fan, and some might even say that I became somewhat obsessed, for which I cannot really blame them. Moreover, I have always had a special interest in mixed language songs, so linking the two subjects seemed only natural. Thanks to a rather unfortunate turn of events, this thesis took a lot longer to write than was initially planned, but nevertheless, here it is. Special thanks are in order for my supervisor, Tony Foster, who has helped me in many ways during this time. I would also like to thank a number of other people for various reasons. The second reader Lettie Dorst. My mother, for being the reason I got involved with the Eurovision Song Contest. • Guida Junior Eurovision 2016

Thorsen signed the consolidation order, permitting Nanuet Hebrew Center and Montebello Jewish Center to become Congregation Shir Shalom. May we all have a bright and prosperous future ahead as we begin this new and exciting adventure. We look forward to seeing you at our services, and at many future events. Sincerely, Gail Kaiser & Jeff Schragenheim Co-Presidents, Nanuet Hebrew Center Fred Robinovitz President, Montebello Jewish Center June 2, 2021 Dear Friends, We wanted to personally share with you some updates as to the status of the consolidation of Nanuet Hebrew Center and Montebello Jewish Center. The Steering Committee and all of the joint subcommittees have been hard at work to make sure that this consolidation process moves along in a steady and timely manner. Here are the most current updates from each of the Consolidation Subcommittees: • The Legal Subcommittee has submitted the Agreement of Consolidation to the New York State Attorney General's office and the Supreme Court of Rockland County for approval of the consolidation. Since the consolidation is almost upon us, and the committee wanted to take a detailed and thorough approach to writing the new constitution. It was agreed that, in the interim, for no more than the first six months, Congregation Shir Shalom will operate under Montebello Jewish Center’s by-laws. Once the new constitution is complete, it will be voted upon by the entire, newly consolidated congregation. • The Finance Subcommittee continues the process of formulating a joint budget.

  • Keshet Chaim
Company Biography Keshet Chaim (Hebrew for Rainbow of Life) is an American-Israeli contemporary dance company, dedicated to celebrating the inclusive spirit of Israeli culture and Judaism throughout the world. Founded in 1983 by Artistic Director Eytan Avisar, Keshet Chaim creates, develops and presents original choreography which fuses contemporary Israeli dance with Jewish folk dance traditions from across the Diaspora. Influenced by the multi-ethnic roots of the Jewish movement, music, art, poetry and culture, Keshet Chaim combats prejudice and anti-Semitism through entertainment, community outreach, children’s workshops, and dance education. Keshet Chaim “forges a unique identity…one of the few touring American dance groups committed exclusively to Israeli culture and dance,” according to the LA Daily News. Performance highlights: In the early years Keshet Chaim performed in two tours in Israel, including the Karmiel Festival, 1984 Summer Olympics, LA Music Center, Los Angeles Festival, Shrine Auditorium, CAJE convention, International Hadassah convention and Universal Amphitheatre. In 1991, Keshet Chaim toured Mexico and cities across Florida. In 1993, the company toured San Diego, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Utah, and a weekend at sea on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. The company was featured at the L.A. Dance Roots Festival and the L.A. County Holiday Show, broadcast live from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on KCET, and an intercultural program at the Church on the Way. In 1994, Keshet Chaim performed as part of Dance Kaleidoscope at the Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles. 1995 featured performances at Poway Performing Arts Center, Valley Jewish Festival, University of Southern California, and the opening ceremonies for the International Maccabiah Games, as well as creating dance education programs for the LA Unified School District.

Time has become harder and harder to keep track of during the pandemic, but for me, Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, is something I feel in my kishkes. It is the time of year most closely connected with dreams, miracles and thanksgiving. True, this Chanukah will be like no other, celebrated in isolation, either alone or only with close family members. Needless to say, 2020 has been the year of adapting — “Zooming” Seders, attending socially distant B’nai Mitzvah and, of course, streaming Shabbat services direct to our living rooms. By this point, celebrating Chanukah virtually seems like no big deal. Yet perhaps more than ever, we need Chanukah. We need to be reminded that this is a time of miracles, to gather ‘round the menorah and share stories of strength and survival, to publicize brightly from our windows that with the glowing candles we recognize God’s presence in our lives, that miracles happen, and that anything is possible. Hidden in the sound of this month’s name, Kislev, are the Hebrew words- Kis: pocket and Lev: heart. A heart in the pocket, like the song says, “I got sunshine in my pocket.” Kislev asks us to reach down deep and put a comforting hand on our heart and its desires, so that we can bring them into the light.
