Systematics, Barcoding and Ecology of Fungi from Waxcap Grasslands in Britain
Project report to DEFRA 1: 3 December 2010 Systematics, barcoding and ecology of fungi from waxcap grasslands in Britain Collaborations An important component of the project is to bring together professional scientists and specialist volunteers to contribute specimens and ecological data, and later on to explore ways of improving the existing recording and monitoring schemes. The project will provide valuable data to aid decision-making for conservation management, for example designation of SSSIs and establishment of red data lists. The first action was therefore to publicize the project to potential collaborators, and emails and verbal communications took place both directly with known collectors/recording groups and through the British Mycological Society. Excluding those named in the project application, 33 individuals/recording groups have provided specimens and/or identification data. Our initial request was for all species of Hygrocybe and Geoglossaceae. While a number of these are common and widespread, there are concerns that existing species concepts are too broad and are masking cryptic taxa. Along with specimens that we have collected ourselves, we have received a total of 213 collections belonging to 34 species/varieties of Hygrocybe and four species of Geoglossaceae. The collections have come from 27 different vice-counties in England, Wales and Scotland. Much of the field season was poor for waxcap species, although a number of species fruited abnormally late in the year. With this in mind, we are very happy with the response we have received from field workers, and there has been a widespread welcome for our project. We are confident that our field collaborators will continue to support our work throughout the project period and beyond. -

40 (2): (2016) 249-259 Original Scientific Paper Diversity of macromycetes in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in Belgrade Jelena Vukojević✳, Ibrahim Hadžić, Aleksandar Knežević, Mirjana Stajić, Ivan Milovanović and Jasmina Ćilerdžić Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, Takovska 43, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia ABSTRACT: At locations in the outdoor area and in the greenhouse of the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, a total of 124 macromycetes species were noted, among which 22 species were recorded for the first time in Serbia. Most of the species belong to the phylum Basidiomycota (113) and only 11 to the phylum Ascomycota. Saprobes are dominant with 81.5%, 45.2% being lignicolous and 36.3% are terricolous. Parasitic species are represented with 13.7% and mycorrhizal species with 4.8%. Inedible species are dominant (70 species), 34 species are edible, five are conditionally edible, eight are poisonous and one is hallucinogenic (Psilocybe cubensis). A significant number of representatives belong to the category of medicinal species. These species have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine of Far Eastern nations. Current studies confirm and explain knowledge gained by experience and reveal new species which produce biologically active compounds with anti-microbial, antioxidative, genoprotective and anticancer properties. Among species collected in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, those medically significant are: Armillaria mellea, Auricularia auricula.-judae, Laetiporus sulphureus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Schizophyllum commune, Trametes versicolor, Ganoderma applanatum, Flammulina velutipes and Inonotus hispidus. Some of the found species, such as T. versicolor and P. ostreatus, also have the ability to degrade highly toxic phenolic compounds and can be used in ecologically and economically justifiable soil remediation. -

1 Tyntesfield Waxcaps 2005 -2013 A paper presented at a Symposium on Grassland Fungi in Formal Landscapes (7-8 November 2014) at Sheffield Hallam University John and Doreen Bailey 6 Durbin Park Road Clevedon BS21 7EU [email protected] Introduction Tyntesfield is a Gothic Revival country house, on a ridge a few miles to the SW of Bristol. There was an earlier manor house, but the present buildings date from developments in the 1860s by William Gibbs, who, at the time, was one of the richest men in the UK. His money was based on the importation of guano from South America1,2. The house remained in the ownership of the Gibbs family until the death of Richard Gibbs in 2001. With no one in the family able to take on the Estate, it was put up for open auction. After a frantic few months the National Trust purchased the Estate in 2002. At this time the Tyntesfield Estate comprised 650 hectares. The present NT house and garden, now called simply Tyntesfield, is only 218 hectares, the remaining farmland and woodlands having been sold. Initial visits Our first visit in 2002 was as one of those privileged to be among the first to view the House. We made another visit in 2003. Both visits were made in November, and we well remember being impressed by seeing mushrooms as we disembarked from the bus. But, being largely ignorant of such things we took no action. However, in 2004, as a retirement present, I was presented with a book “Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms of the World” and our real interest in fungi began. -

Over 25 år tidligere havde jeg set planten ovenfor Tretten efter anvisning af købmand Nustad i Tretten og et gensyn med skogranke – og behørig fotografering – stod meget højt på min ønskeliste. På min vej op i kløften var der gode botaniske grunde til talrige hvil, og efter 800 m henad og 300 m opad fandt jeg igen en plads til min rygsækstol. Jeg vendte mig om, satte mig ned og så, at jeg var gået lige forbi en stor og meget flot bevoksning af skogranke. MushRumors The Newsletter of the Northwest Mushroomers Association Volume 25, Issue 4 December 2014 After Arid Start, 2014 Mushroom Season Flourishes It All Came Together By Chuck Nafziger It all came together for the 2014 Wild Mushroom Show; an October with the perfect amount of rain for abundant mushrooms, an enthusiastic volunteer base, a Photo by Vince Biciunas great show publicity team, a warm sunny show day, and an increased public interest in foraging. Nadine Lihach, who took care of the admissions, reports that we blew away last year's record attendance by about 140 people. Add to that all the volunteers who put the show together, and we had well over 900 people involved. That's a huge event for our club. Nadine said, "... this was a record year at the entry gate: 862 attendees (includes children). Our previous high was in 2013: 723 attendees. Success is more measured in the happiness index of those attending, and many people stopped by on their way out to thank us for the wonderful show. Kids—and there were many—were especially delighted, and I'm sure there were some future mycophiles and mycologists in Sunday's crowd. The mushroom display A stunning entry display greets visitors arriving at the show. by the door was effective, as always, at luring people in. You could actually see the kids' eyes getting bigger as they surveyed the weird mushrooms, and twice during the day kids ran back to our table to tell us that they had spotted the mushroom fairy. There were many repeat adult visitors, too, often bearing mushrooms for identification. -
