Timeline / 1860 to 1900
Timeline / 1860 to 1900 Date Country Theme 1860 - 1900 Tunisia Cities And Urban Spaces Following development of the Port of La Goulette, new districts relating to trade and industrial activities are born. The neighbourhood is given the name of “Little Sicily”, which is suggestive of its role as host to a poor immigrant population mainly from southern Italy. 1860 Tunisia Great Inventions Of The 19th Century The restoration of the Aqueduct of Zaghouan is completed, running water arrives in Tunis. 1860 - 1863 Tunisia Economy And Trade Restoration of the Zaghouan Aqueduct, Tunisia’s largest water-service network, allows supply to the capital and its suburbs. 1860 Romania Fine And Applied Arts 7 November: on the initiative of painter Gheorghe Panaitescu-Bardasare, a School of Fine Arts and an art gallery are founded in Ia#i. 1860 France Travelling First trip by Napoleon III to Algeria; the second will take place in 1865. 1860 - 1870 Jordan Reforms And Social Changes By the 1860s, population density has decreased drastically. The border of the sawn cultivated land had been pushed westwards under the pressure of the nomadic tribes from the east. Several reasons are suggested for this decline, including maladministration and the taxation policies of the Ottoman Empire. Some of the regions south of Ajlun, including Amman area, and along the escarpment of the Jordan valley were almost completely abandoned. Recovery starts during the last quarter of the 19th century. 1860 Italy Cities And Urban Spaces The unification of Italy leads to urban expansion outside the old city walls, which have lost their defensive value. -

Classical Athens, its culture, and its monuments inspired, to a large extent, the government's initial architectural direction. As time went on, how- ever, a more complex combination of internal and external influences came to define the political, social, and cultural orientation of the new nation. Focusing on the major architectural production and its concomitant theo- retical framework during the first century after liberation, it is my aim here to examine the shifting definitions of national Greek architecture within t}e context of these historical parameters. This examination reveals close parallels between the development of a national architectural ideol- ory and identity, on the one hand, and the broader construction of a na- tional cultural image on the other. -

Retrofit of Stone Masonry Buildings in Greece I

ARHITECTURĂ RETROFIT OF STONE MASONRY BUILDINGS IN GREECE I. DAMAGE PATTERNS AND PREVENTIVE RETROFIT/REPAIR MEASURES BY MARIA BOŞTENARU-DAN1,*, GREGORY G. PENELIS2 and GREGOR BOURLOTOS3 1“Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism, Bucharest 2Penelis Consulting Engineers SA, Thessaloniki, Greece 3Karlsruhe University, Germany Received: September 5, 2012 Accepted for publication: September 28, 2012 Abstract. This paper concerns the retrofit of seismic retrofit of stone masonry buildings in Greece. Unlike the study of historic buildings, which is in most cases done for masonry buildings since reinforced concrete is not considered historical enough, for benefit-costs studies of seismic retrofit more studies were conducted for reinforced concrete buildings, as these are more common. First seismic retrofit measures for common masonry buildings are presented, using steel and reinforced concrete. The focus lays in division of seismic retrofit measures in singular steps and to organize them in order to make possible the determination of the individual costs of the partial works. The measures are divided into preventive measures on undamaged buildings and repair measures on damaged buildings. The measures are compared to those used in the practice of monumental buildings, considering two buildings in Athens, where concrete and FRP were employed. These buildings belong to a wider stylistic European movement of the 19th century Neoclassicism, as foreign architects settled to Greece that time. Key words: stone; masonry; monuments; retrofit; historic buildings; Greece. *Corresponding author: e-mail: [email protected] 20 Maria Boştenaru-Dan, Gregory Penelis and Gregor Bourlotos 1. -
