p Issues of Gender Representation in Modern Greek Art The Case of Thaleia Flora-Caravia’s Photographic Images and Self-Portraits Despoina Tsourgianni ABSTRACT There is a recent trend, mainly in the fi eld of historiography but also in art history, toward the exploration of female autobiographical discourse, whether it concerns writ- ten (autobiographies, correspondence), painted (self-portraits), or photographic data. On the basis of the highly fruitful gender perspective, this article seeks to present and interpret the numerous photographs of the well-known Greek painter Thaleia Flora- Caravia. These photographic recordings, taken almost exclusively from the painter’s unpublished personal archive, are inextricably linked to the artist’s self-portraits. This kind of cross-examination allows the reader to become familiar with the mosaic of roles and identities that constitutes the subjectivity of female artists in Greece in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. VINICIO CAPOSSELA From Tefteri: A Settling of Scores (non- fiction) Translated from the Italian by Elettra Pauletto Athens, March 2012 The word “crisis” comes from the Greek kríno, which means to sep- arate, sort, divide. Crisis is a concept that lends itself well to rebetiko— a type of music born of separation—and to Greece, from which Europe is pulling away, driven by the disdain that lies at the root of all rejection. People often speak of Greece with language that evokes tragedy, which, as a genre, was invented there. The word “tragedy” comes from the Greek tragudi, or song, and at its root is tragos, which means goat. Tragodia, song of the goat. Once the cultural mother of Europe, Greece has become a scapegoat for her sins. Europa, daughter to a king of Crete, seduced by Zeus. Europa of the “wide eyes,” land of the west, ever facing the setting sun. Since ancient times, Greek creations have been permeated with a sense of universality. Taken together, this body of work tells the story of man, the anthropos. And it tells the story of man and destiny, of what is happening to Westerners in this moment of “crisis,” of choices. Let’s travel there, a small tool in hand— a thyrsus, perhaps— and accompanied by music born of catastrophe. Greeks still use the word Katastrofis to describe the Greco- Turkish war of 1922, the destruction of Smyrna, and the exodus of the Greeks from Asia Minor. These million and a half refugees were the ones who, following the treaty of Lausanne, returned destitute to a motherland that no longer wanted them; brought back with them the music and customs of other places; and gathered in suburban neighborhoods, changing the social fabric of 1920s Athens (then dubbed the “Paris of the Eastern Mediterranean” by the young Greek state, which wanted to westernize Greek culture). -
A Bronze Pail of Athena Alalkomenia
A BRONZE PAIL OF ATHENA ALALKOMENIA (PLATES 31-34) T HE remarkable archaic Greek bronze vessel published here (P1. 31, a) was l.4 purchased in Mantinea in Arcadia in the spring of 1957 and donated to the Museum in Tegea where other antiquities from the same region have their abode. It had been found by a local shepherd some distance to the north of the ruins of Man- tinea but, unfortunately, the exact location of the discovery could not be ascertained.' The major part of the vessel is preserved, including about half of its upper profiled edge and one attachment for the handle which passed through its upper ring. The whole of this ring is still filled with iron and it is evident that the missing handle was made of this material. The carefully proportioned body has a height of 0.241 m. to the upper edge of the lip. Its largest diameter, 0.215 m., is slightly smaller than the total height and exactly the same both at the outer edge of the lip and at the greatest width of the body which, in turn, occurs precisely half way between that edge and the bottom of the vessel, 0.12 m. distant from both. The upper face of the lip inclines outward slightly to allow overspilling liquid to run off, as it were, from an architectural cornice. The proportion of diameter to height, the rounded bottom and the contraction of the width under the lip combine to give the impression of an elastic curvilinear rhythm to the generally ovoid form. -

Aidōs tends it with pure river water, and those who by their nature always use moderation [sōphrosunē] in all things, instead of having learned it, they can pick flowers, but it is not lawful [themis] for the kakos. Philē mistress, for your golden locks accept this headband from my reverent hand. I alone among mortals have this privilege: I keep company with you and make conversation, hearing your voice although not seeing your face. -

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

Wave-Based Acoustic Modeling of the Epidaurus Theatre
Wave-based acoustic modeling of the Epidaurus theatre Konstantinos Kaleris, George Moiragias, Gavriil Kamaris and John Mourjopoulos Audio & Acoustic Technology Group, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, University of Patras, Greece. Summary The acoustics of the ancient theatre of Epidaurus have been evaluated in the past via measurements and models. However, the topic still remains open especially with respect to the contributions of the specific architectural elements to the theatre's excellent acoustic performance. Here, the study focuses on 3 novel aspects for a better understanding of the theater's acoustics: (a) introduces a wave-based acoustics simulation of the Epidaurus theatre based on a flexible but simplified 3D geometric model (b) matches temporal and spectral features of measured and modeled responses, The wave model considers direct, reflected, diffracted and mixed reflection - diffraction sound paths for calculating the theatre's acoustic Impulse Response (IR) in several listening positions, from the front rows of the lower tier to the last rows of the upper tier. For exact tuning of the model, such simulated IR discrete temporal features due to the calculated sound paths are examined through time-distance matching, allowing thus direct comparison to the theatre's measured IRs and further interpretation of the effects of each of the architectural features of the theatre. In order to precisely match the simulation to measurements, the acoustic behavior of reflecting and diffracting surfaces/edges is incorporated in the model through application of special filters, developed according to the spectral characteristics of the reflection and diffraction features of the measured IRs. From the study it is deduced that sound diffraction plays a major role in the theatre's acoustics, assisting signal reception especially at the distant positions. -
