  • Press Informations About Bavarian Forest National Park
Nationalparkverwaltung Bayerischer Wald PRESS INFORMATION Bavarian Forest National Park Profile Location The Bavarian Forest National Park is located in eastern Lower Bavaria, close to the border with the Czech Republic. This large protected area is managed by the Nationalparkverwaltung Bayerischer Wald (Bavarian Forest National Park Administration), a special authority directly subordinate to the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection. Together with the neighbouring Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic, the Bavarian Forest National Park makes up part of the largest interconnected protected area of forest in Central Europe. Foundation On 11 June 1969, the Bavarian Parliament voted unanimously in favour of the resolution approving the establishment of a national park in the area between the mountains of Rachel and Lusen. On 7 October 1970, a large protected area some 13,000 hectares in size was opened in Freyung-Grafenau County as Germany’s first national park. Expansion On 1 August 1997, the National Park was extended by 11,000 hectares in the Falkenstein-Rachel area of Regen County. Size 24,250 hectares, 17,516 hectares of which is natural zone – 72.3 percent of the overall surface area (as of 2019). Philosophy Guided by its principle of “Letting nature be natural”, the National Park leaves forests, bogs, streams and mountaintops to develop into a boundless woodland wilderness according to their own laws. This approach helps the commercial woodlands of yesterday become the primeval forest of tomorrow – fostering unique biodiversity in the process. Rare animals like the lynx, capercaillie, Ural owl and other species native to primeval forests, like saproxylic beetles, can then resettle in the region over time.

  • Bayerisch Eisenstein's Historic Train Station
Our Family History Bayerisch Eisenstein’s Historic Train Station (The Bavarian-Bohemian Frontier Station) © Susan McNelley Bayerisch Eisenstein (Photo by SAM, 1998) Whether arriving by car or by train, visitors to Bayerisch Eisenstein or nearby Železná Ruda shouldn’t miss the train station at Bayerisch Eisenstein. This building at the edge of the village has the distinction of being the only train station in Europe that straddles an international border. This station and the connecting rail line have a long and interesting history. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Bavaria and Bohemia began to consider building a rail line which would link the Bavarian rail system with the Bohemian railway network. It was expected that this would stimulate local industry and improve commerce between the two countries. It was also suggested that this line would become a major rail line between Munich and Prague. In 1872, the Bavarian Eastern Railway Company was given the concession to build a railway line from the existing line in Plattling to Bayerisch Eisenstein. The construction of the new line proved to be exceedingly challenging because of the steep climb from the Danube River valley to the Bavarian forest and because of the number of valleys to be crossed. Construction was begun in 1873 and completed in late 1877. At Bayerisch Eisenstein, a seven-track turntable house with granite walls was constructed in the style typical of the East Bavarian Railways. This roundhouse remains today and houses the Bavarian Local Railway Museum. At the same time in 1 Our Family History Bohemia, the rail line from Pilsen to Markt Eisenstein (now Železná Ruda) was finished and put into service, following the completion of a 1,747 meter (2 km-long) tunnel through Špičák mountain.

There were scarce data on wolf occurrence in the first half of the 20th century. Eight animals escaped from capti- vity in 1976. Altogether 16 animals were shot during following years 1976–1989. Since 1990 there is incre- ase of findings with different level of reliability. Data indicate the occurrence of only single individuals, most likely males, and not any population. Reproduction could not be confirmed. The origin of the indivi- dual wolves is unclear. Some findings indicate animals escaped from captivity, but also a natural immigra- tion from the east (the Carpathians) seems to be possible. The wolf occurrence in the area under study co- rresponds well with the population increase in Slovakia. The dead animals, which were analysed morphometrically, relate to wolves, but the genetic analysis is still missing. Bohemian Forest is seen as an area with sufficient natural carrying capacity for the permanent occurrence of wolf.
