The families were ultimately linked by marriage when Hope Dowling, a Turnbull descendant, married Malcolm Gibson. Hope Dowling married Malcolm Frank Gibson, a pastoralist of Meadow Bank, Campbell Town, on 11 May 1921 at St Andrew’s Church, Campbell Town. There is a considerable quantity of material relating to Malcolm Gibson (1891-1961) and some for his father Frank William Gibson (1863-1913) and his grandfather William Henry Gibson (1837-1906). William leased Meadow Bank and Frank, a pastoralist of Wanstead, near Campbell Town, subsequently purchased the property. Malcolm succeeded his father at Meadow Bank, where he bred Merino sheep. He was one of the State’s leading show-horse exhibitors and breeders and a member of the Midland Hunt Club for many years. The Gibson papers provide a detailed record of farming activities at Meadow Bank for some 60 years, including information on employees. The financial records demonstrate the interaction between the property and Campbell Town businesses. Hope Gibson was the daughter of Lewis and Alexandra May (known as May) Dowling. Her father, Lewis Dowling (1867-1951), managed Quorn Hall, Campbell Town, for many years and some Quorn Hall records are included. Her mother, May, was a daughter of William and Amelia Turnbull and William was a son of Rev. Dr Adam Turnbull. Hope shared an interest in show-horses with her husband. A successful equestrian, she contributed the chapter ‘A horse for a hack’ in Zita White’s book, A Race of Horsemen (Brisbane, 1962). Hope continued to live at Meadow Bank after Malcolm’s death in 1961, until her passing thirty years later, on 19 July 1993. A considerable amount of her correspondence and financial records are included in the collection. Rev. Dr Adam Turnbull (1803-1891), medical practitioner, public servant and Presbyterian minister, arrived in Van Diemen’s Land in 1825. The subject of an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, he was Presbyterian minister at Campbell Town from 1854 to 1874. After he retired he lived at Ivy Cottage, Glenelg Street, in the town until the time of his death. His records form an important component of the collection. There are also records for some of his Campbell Town descendants. Ada Susanna Turnbull, one of William and Amelia Turnbull’s eight daughters, was the last member of the Turnbull family to live in the town: she died there in 1951. Dates of birth and death have been obtained from the records, printed indexes to the Examiner (held in the Launceston Library), Victorian Great War Index 1914-1920 on microfiche and from publications listed in Other Sources. The collection was donated to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in August 1993.
