Where necessary there are notes provided to explain anything new in the lists but in general this is simply an enormously expanded version of the Character Class section of the Rulebook. Nothing in this book is necessary for play or is “mandatory” in any way. Indeed, not everyone playing WHITEFRANK even uses character classes, especially when telling stories with very young players. However, for those players who like character classes and who understand the basic concept of what a class means in a role-playing game the expanded list should provide some more inspiration. As with many OSR games, a non- human species is treated as a class. This still allows more than one character class to be chosen, as has been demonstrated in other WHITEFRANK books – Elf Swordsman and so on. Some classes refer to items listed in the WHITEFRANK Item Catalogue. If you don’t have it and don’t want it – MAKE SOMETHING UP! Combinations and Family Lines Character class combinations should be taken as literally as possible and the various Attributes, Skills, Problems and Powers combined, heights and weights averaged, and so on. That process of cross-fertilisation is what makes classes fun in the first place. Otherwise what you are left with as a player is a caste system, which is not only offensive, it’s arbitrary. A Doghead who marries a Sphinx, should they be blessed with children, will produce Doghead-Sphinx children in appearance for example but the parents do not automatically pass on any class statistics because neither parent has Blueblood. For players who want some randomness in heredity, roll 1d6 for each child and consult the chart below: Offspring Inheritance – 1d6 Die Roll Effect 1 Child is a copy of father with same statistics. Appearance is that of father. 2 Child has appearance of father but does not inherit any statistics. 3 Child physically resembles a blend of both parents, more like father than mother, but has no inherited statistics. 4 Child physically resembles a blend of both parents, more like mother than father, but has no inherited statistics. 5 Child has appearance of mother but does not inherit any statistics. Sample6 Child is a copy of mother with same statistics. MAMUNA [PART 1] * Keywords: Slavonic, Oriental, etymology, mythology, folklore Abstract A specialist in Middle Eastern languages will likely be quick to associate Pol. mamuna ‘an ape-like mythological creature’ with Ar./Pers./Tkc. majmun ‘ape’. It is possible and indeed probable that this name is an Oriental borrowing applied to an ancient native belief, but a closer inspection reveals at least several other possibilities tangled in an ethnolinguistic web of potential conflations and contaminations. This paper presents the ethnographic background and some etymological ideas, though without as yet a definite answer. 1. Introduction The present paper is concerned with the character and the name ofmamuna , an evil spirit that often takes the shape of an ugly, hairy woman who abducts children and places her own in their stead. The episode would have gone unnoticed if it were not for the fact that the province was full of similar fables about other lakes, wells and fountains. It was certainly surprising to find out that such tales were not exclusive to that region, or even to the neighbouring Asturias and Galicia,1 but also a conventional phenomenon to all the modern Celtic countries of northern Europe. Curiously, in spite of the geographical and chronological distances that separate the insular Celts, in which I include Brittany, and their Iberian Romance-speaking relatives, motifs, characters and plots were very similar in both worlds. To know why this kind of relationship exists in all those territories became more than simple curiosity, but a goal to work for. Due to their high number of lakes, pools and tarns and the strong vitality of her ancient Celtic culture, Wales and her folklore offer excellent opportunities to the researcher who wants to study this topic in depth.
