Taking their cue from the original book town, Hay-on-Wye, in Wales, rural French communities once in danger of disappearing have reclaimed their economic future and their heritage. Founded in 1961, Hay-on-Wye has served as a model for other towns to establish a used book trade, organize literary festivals, and promote the practice of traditional book arts that include calligraphy, binding, paper-making, and printing. In the French villages du livre of Bécherel (Bretagne), Montolieu (Languedoc), Fontenoy-la-Joûte (Lorraine), Montmorillon (Poitou-Charentes), and La Charité-sur-Loire (Bourgogne), ancillary enterprises such as museums, bookstores, cafés, and small hotels now occupy buildings that had stood vacant for years.

French novelists, meanwhile, have increasingly turned to first person narratives; autobiographies and especially autofictions continue to dominate current publication lists. Equally concerned with identity questions, these same texts have often been accused of solipsism, and their authors described as narcissists of little talent. In this dissertation, I argue that the debates surrounding national identity and the problematic construction of a written personal identity are, in fact, intimately related.

The literary interview can be regarded as a hybrid genre for several reasons. First, it belongs to both This research on the literary interview is part of the Interuniversity Attraction Pole (IAP) project Literature and Media Innovation (LMI, lmi.arts.kuleuven.be/). A first version of this paper was presented at the international symposium “Les entretiens d’e´crivains: Enjeux et mutations d’un genre dialogique/Writers in Conversation: A Dialogic Genre; Issues and Transformations,” held at KU Leuven and Universite´ catholique de Louvain in Belgium (December 5 – 7, 2011), with the support of the Research Fund – Flanders (FWO) and Fonds de la Recherche Scien- tifique – FNRS. Accordingly, the depiction of real literary figures in visual media like photography or the cinema has become more and more frequent, leading writers to take part, more or less voluntarily, in modern celebrity culture. Through the study of visual artefacts created around French writers between the 1850s and the present, this project seeks to examine the role of visual culture in the fashioning of writers’ artistic and social identities. The writers considered, Charles Baudelaire, Colette, Romain Gary and, to a lesser extent, Frédéric Beigbeder, lived through times when the world of visual media was undergoing major changes due to the advent of new technologies, respectively, photography, cinema and television.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological meant to photograph and reproduce this document have bean used, the quality it heavily dependant upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. I 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. Whan an image on the film is obliterated with a large round Mack mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You w ill find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. Whan a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper le ft hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equaf"sections With a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again - beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
