Kekoolani Family Genealogy No. 2 The Second Chiefly Lineage of Lillian Kaeo Kanakaole Kekoolani and her Great Grandchildren 98 Generations This genealogy is similar to Genealogy No. 1, The First Chiefly Genealogy of Lillian Kanakaole Kaeo Kekoolani. It is the same up to generation 67. There it branches off and follows the lineage of the Maui high chiefs and kings, until rejoining Genealogy No. 1 at Generation 89 (Makakkaualii). The generations in our genealogies are calculated at 25 years each. This is a Maui and Big Island genealogy so in the time before Wakea and Papa, the generations are given as they appear in the Kumulipo Chant, the most esteemed genealogy in the eyes of these chiefs. MAY 20, 1897 LEE AND SHEPARD, BOSTON ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 1897 The Kumulipo Translated By Queen Liliuokalani. This edition created and published by Global Grey 2014. GLOBAL GREY NOTHING BUT E-BOOKS TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION THE FIRST ERA THE SECOND ERA THE THIRD ERA THE FOURTH ERA THE FIFTH ERA THE SIXTH ERA THE SEVENTH ERA THE EIGHTH ERA THE NINTH ERA THE TENTH ERA THE ELEVENTH ERA THE TWELFTH ERA A BRANCH OF THE TWELFTH ERA THE FOURTEENTH ERA THE FIFTEENTH ERA THE SIXTEENTH ERA KALAKAUA AND LILIUOKALANI'S GENEALOGY 1 The Kumulipo Translated By Queen Liliuokalani INTRODUCTION THERE are several reasons for the publication of this work, the translation of which pleasantly employed me while imprisoned by the present rulers of Hawaii. It will be to my friends a souvenir of that part of my own life, and possibly it may also be of value to genealogists and scientific men of a few societies to which a copy will be forwarded. The folk-lore or traditions of an aboriginal people have of late years been considered of inestimable value; language itself changes, and there are terms and allusions herein to the natural history of Hawaii, which might be forgotten in future years without some such history as this to preserve them to posterity.

  • Miki Basin Industrial Park Exhibit a Archaeological Inventory Survey
Miki Basin Industrial Park Environmental Assessment Exhibit A Archaeological Inventory Survey Archaeological Data Recovery Plan And Archaeological Data Recovery Report (Including Cultural Impact Analysis) September 24, 2019 Kurt Matsumoto, COO Pulama Lāna‘i 733 Bishop Street Suite 2000 Honolulu, HI 96813 Re: Archaeological Inventory Survey for the Miki Basin 200 Acre Industrial Development TMK (2) 4-9-002:061 (portion) Dye, DiVito and Maly (May 9, 2018) Mr. Matsumoto: This letter confirms that, although not titled as such, the Archaeological Inventory Survey cited above included research compliant with guidelines for development of a cultural impact assessment study (CIA), required by the Hawai‘i Supreme Court’s holding in Ka Paakai O Ka Aina v. Land Use Commission, State of Hawai‘i, 7 P.3d 1068, 94 Hawai‘i 31 (2000). The study includes descriptions of traditional knowledge of place, and traditional and customary practices as documented in Hawaiian language accounts from Lāna‘i. There also cited important historical accounts penned by foreign residents and visitors, documenting the changes in land use, access and residency from the 1840s to the 1950s. As a result of the rapid decline of the native Hawaiian population on Lāna‘i, and early control of nearly all the land on the island by non-native business interests, little documentation pertaining to the extent to which traditional and customary native Hawaiian rights might be exercised in the petition area survived the passing of time. No native tenant kuleana (property rights) or Royal Patent Grants were issued for lands within the petition area. By the 1870s control of the petition area lands was held under one individual, who also posted notices advising against trespass.

  • Keopuolani, Sacred Wife, Queen Mother, 1778-1823
ESTHER T. MOOKINI Keopuolani, Sacred Wife, Queen Mother, 1778-1823 KEOPUOLANI, DAUGHTER OF KINGS, wife of a king, and mother of two kings, was the last direct descendant of the ancient kings of Hawai'i and Maui and the last of the female ali'i (chief) whose mana was equal to that of the gods. From May 1819 to March 1820 she was the central figure in the kingdom's history. Her husband, Kameha- meha, had already united the islands under his rule. On May 8 or 14, 1819, he died in Kailua, Kona. It was during the mourning period that the ancient kapu system collapsed, and Keopuolani was instru- mental in this dramatic change. Six months later, when her first-born son, Liholiho, heir to the kingdom, was challenged by Kekuaokalani, his cousin, Keopuolani, the only female ali'i kapu (sacred chief), con- fronted the challenger. She tried to negotiate with him so as to pre- vent a battle that could end with her son's losing the kingdom. The battle at Kuamo'o was fought, Kekuaokalani was killed, and Kameha- meha IPs kingdom was saved. Three months later, the first of the American Protestant missionaries arrived in Kailua, Kona, with a new religion and a system of education. Keopuolani was the first ali'i to welcome them and allowed them to remain in the kingdom. Information about her personal life is meager and dates are few. There is no known image of her, although there was a sketch done of her by the Reverend William Ellis, a member of the London Missionary Society, who lived in the Hawaiian kingdom for two years, Esther T.

  • Ola Nā Iwi1 Building Future Leaders by Linking Students to the Past
OLA NĀ IWI1 BUILDING FUTURE LEADERS BY LINKING STUDENTS TO THE PAST Ola Nā Iwi is a place-based curriculum resource packet that provides K-12 teachers with both primary and secondary sources—texts, images, videos, links and more—centered on the royal, and other, burials at the Waineʻe Cemetery of Waiola Church in Lāhainā, Maui. These materials can be used to create place-based lesson plans that address current Hawai‘i Department of Education Content and Performance Standards. These curriculum packets seek to highlight Native voice by accessing both Hawaiian and English- language resources, textual and oral, of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. A genealogy of voice links current-day practices with past understandings. Four central themes are threaded throughout the resources and essays: Kuleana - the rights and responsibilities that fall to each of us Native Agency - histories should reflect the active engagement of Native Hawaiians in the events that affected their lives, land, and lāhui Nation Building - the creation, under Native rule, of a near fully literate, progressive, sovereign nation Ka Poʻe Aloha ʻĀina - a nation of men and women devoted to the defense of their aliʻi, their nation, and their ʻāina The resources provided are meant to assist kumu in preparing lesson plans and classroom exercises that complement and contextualize field trips to Waineʻe Cemetery in Lāhainā. They can be used as preparation for the excursion and/or summarization and further study upon return. Resources related to the cemetery and burials at Waineʻe, Lāhainā, Maui can be used to teach interdisciplinary lessons about the land, people, and governance of Hawaiʻi in both past and present.
