    DIGITAL SWITCHOVER DSO — the Swedish experience Per Björkman Sveriges Television AB One of the most interesting, complicated, intriguing and political questions for the upcoming years in Europe will be the question of how to handle the spectrum in the UHF band (470 - 862 MHz). Up to now, this has been the frequency space used for analogue television but with the approaching analogue switch-off, this will change. In Sweden, the last analogue transmitter was shut down a year ago and the process for a new spectrum allocation is up and running at full speed. This article takes a closer look at the situation in Sweden. In Sweden, digital terrestrial transmissions started relatively early. Sweden was actually the second European country to launch DDT services, in March 1999, just a couple of months after the UK. During the subsequent years, it was expanded to five multiplexes (muxes), providing national coverage. Mux 1 is the Public Service (PS) bouquet with an outstanding coverage of 99.8% of the Swedish population. Muxes 2 - 4 cover some 98% of the population and Mux 5 about 70%. Today there are 30+ channels in the digital terrestrial network, most of them on subscription from the pay- TV operator Boxer. However, there is also a free-to-air choice comprising the PS channels and some commercial and local channels. In 2005, the close-down of the three analogue channels started. SVT had two channels – SVT1 on VHF and SVT2 on UHF – and the commercial broadcaster TV4 had one channel in the UHF band. During the close-down period, SVT, TV4, Teracom and the “Swedish Digital Commission” joined forces and launched a massive information campaign to prepare all households for the coming switchover.

    Tuesday 13 November 2007 RE: Response to the proposed BSkyB digital terrestrial television services consultation I wish to start by personally thanking you for allowing me to respond to the plans that British Sky Broadcastings plans to launch their Picnic platform on Digital Terrestrial Television, including the launch of the following services: z Sky Sports One; z A children's channel/Sky Movies SD One; z A factual channel/Sky News/Sky One; z Sky News (if BSkyB is given permission to launch a fourth service on DTT using MPEG-4 encoding); z Broadband up to 16Mbps and a telephony service. I wish to begin by giving an idea of my thoughts on the proposal by BSkyB before I answer the questions in the consultation document. Introduction 1. Regarding the use of by BSkyB and NDS Group, the VideoGuard conditional access technology for its pay television services. According to the press release that was released by BSkyB on the 8th of February 2007,1 the service will use a highly secure conditional access system similar to the one BSkyB uses for its digital satellite services, Sky Digital and FreesatFromSky. I also understand that Sky has also stated that viewers will require a new set-top-box to access the new service. In the past, since the launch of the Sky satellite television service in February 1989 via the Astra satellite, BSkyB have always used NDS Group technology to encrypt and protect their own branded services, with both the VideoCrypt and VideoGuard conditional access systems for their Sky analogue and digital satellite services respectively.

    Telenor’s new satellite, THOR 5, successfully launched Telenor Satellite Broadcasting is pleased to announce the successful launch of its new geo stationary satellite, THOR 5. The satellite was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 12.34 (CET), on 11 February and the launch was declared a success after the satellite separated as planned from the Proton Breeze M launch vehicle at 21.56 (CET) the same day. "I was delighted to see THOR 5 successfully being launched", said Cato Halsaa, CEO of Telenor Satellite Broadcasting. On its third launch of the year from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, and first with an Ariane 5, Arianespace will orbit satellites for two European operators: THOR 7 for the private Norwegian company Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc), and SICRAL 2 for Telespazio, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defense and the French defense procurement agency DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement, part of the Ministry of Defense). The year’s first mission with the Ariane 5 heavy launcher once again illustrates Arianespace’s assigned task of guaranteeing independent access to space for European operators from both the private and public sectors. Since being founded in 1980, Arianespace has placed 224 satellites into geostationary transfer orbit for customers from Europe. THOR 7 THOR 7 will be the second satellite orbited by Arianespace for the private Norwegian operator Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc), after THOR 6 in October 2009. Built by Space Systems/Loral using an LS-1300 platform, THOR 7 will weigh approximately 4,600 kg at launch. It is fitted with 21 active Ku-band and 25 Ka-band transponders and will be positioned at 0.8° West. THOR 7 will provide TV broadcasting services for central and eastern Europe. Its payload will also provide broadband communications for the maritime industry, along with spotbeams covering European waters. Offering a design life of 15 years, THOR 7 is the 47th satellite built by Space Systems/Loral (or its predecessor companies) to be launched by Arianespace.
