WELCOME

Welcome to the 15th European Symposium on Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour (ESSSB15) which takes place on August 27- 30, 2014 in Tallinn, Estonia. The ESSSB is a bi-annual event, which brings regularly together the international community of people – researchers, clinicians, volunteers – who care about suicidal people and have dedicated their work to prevent . It is very important to meet, share experiences and present recent achievements in order to accomplish the ambitious goal – to save lives all over the world. Participation in the conference will give the feeling of joint power that gives strength and new ideas for research and action.

The tradition of the ESSSB is to offer a high-level scientific programme – plenary and keynote lectures, lively debates, thematic symposiums, parallel sessions, workshops and posters – but also social events that connect conference participants in an informal way. Our intention this time was to emphasize and promote an integrated and hopeful approach to . Therefore the slogan of the ESSSB15 is “Suicide prevention is mental health promotion”. Suicide is a tragic event, but people working in the field of suicidology have understood long time ago that suicide is not merely an event – it is a process that starts long before a person becomes truly suicidal. Therefore mental health promotion in parallel with early recognition of warning signs and interventions that include both conventional and complementary treatments could be the keywords for effective suicide prevention.

We are very honoured to have you all here in Tallinn and we hope our joint efforts will make the difference.
