Rethinking the Postwar Era: Soviet Ukrainian Writers Under Late Stalinism, 1945-1949 by Iuliia Kysla A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Iuliia Kysla, 2018 Abstract This dissertation advances the study of late Stalinism, which has until recently been regarded as a bizarre appendage to Stalin’s rule, and aims to answer the question of whether late Stalinism was a rupture with or continuation of its prewar precursor. I analyze the reintegration of Ukrainian writers into the postwar Soviet polity and their adaptation to the new realities following the dramatic upheavals of war. Focusing on two parallel case studies, Lviv and Kyiv, this study explores how the Soviet regime worked with members of the intelligentsia in these two cities after 1945, at a time when both sides were engaged in “identification games.” This dissertation demonstrates that, despite the regime’s obsession with control, there was some room for independent action on the part of Ukrainian writers and other intellectuals. Authors exploited gaps in Soviet discourse to reclaim agency, which they used as a vehicle to promote their own cultural agendas. Unlike the 1930s, when all official writers had to internalize the tropes of Soviet culture, in the postwar years there was some flexibility in an author’s ability to accept or reject the Soviet system. Moreover, this dissertation suggests that Stalin’s postwar cultural policy—unlike the strategies of the 1930s, which relied predominantly on coercive tactics—was defined mainly by discipline by humiliation, which often involved bullying and threatening members of the creative intelligentsia. -

A Clash of Civilizations? the Extent of Inter-Civilizational Differences in Approaches to Cultural Property
________________________________ A Clash of Civilizations? The extent of inter-civilizational differences in approaches to cultural property. _______________________________ Name: Victoria Kelly Student Number: 5944244 Supervisor: Maartje Weerdesteijn Word Count: 15,000 ________________________________________________________________ Abstract This paper discusses to what extent can inter-civilizational differences in approaches towards cultural property be observed? It regards the work of Professor John Merryman and his Internationalist vs. Nationalist framework and asks if there is room for a bridging paradigm between the two in the form of a civilizational approach. The theory of Samuel P. Huntington is utilised for the analysis of a civilizational theory of world order in relation to cultural property, his divisions of civilizations are used along with his categorisation of “core states”. The paper implements the case study of Palmyra to demonstrate how the preservation, promotion and destruction of cultural heritage sites has heightened the inter-civilizational distinctions between cultural property approaches. Ukrainian Hamlet and «Hamletizing» Ukraine: «Will You Play Upon This Pipe?»
ІІ. Рецепція художньої спадщини Ренесансу в культурі наступних епох УДК: 821.111:821.161.2’42 Torkut Nataliya, Cherniak Yurii (Zaporizhzhia) Ukrainian Hamlet and «hamletizing» Ukraine: «Will you play upon this pipe?»

A Worthy Warrior Queen: Perceptions of Zenobia in Ancient Rome
A WORTHY WARRIOR QUEEN: PERCEPTIONS OF ZENOBIA IN ANCIENT ROME A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of The School of Continuing Studies and of The Graduate School for the Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies By Gayle Young, B.A. Georgetown University Washington, D.C. June 2, 2009 WORTHY WARRIOR QUEEN: PERCEPTIONS OF ZENOBIA IN ANCIENT ROME Gayle Young, B.A. Mentor: Dr. Charles McNelis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Ancient Rome had a longstanding history of conflict with Eastern queens beginning, before its very foundation, with Dido and most famously exemplified by Cleopatra. Literature suggests powerful women from the East were particularly feared and loathed. Yet the Palmyrene ruler Zenobia, who claimed descent from Cleopatra and briefly conquered Egypt, was reportedly admired and, once vanquished by Aurelian, was allowed to retire comfortably to a villa in Tivoli. By examining surviving historical texts of the 3 rd century, and comparing them with surviving historical and literary texts from the Augustan age, this thesis will postulate why the Roman perception of Zenobia appears to have differed so radically. It will conclude that Aurelian, who was markedly sensitive to his public image, waged a propaganda campaign that emulated that of Augustus in some respects, but ultimately differed because he needed for Zenobia to be admired in order to justify his victory over a woman. ii CONTENTS ABSTRACT ……………………………………………………………………….….. ii LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS ……………………………………………….…….. iv INTRODUCTION …………………………………………………………………… 1 CHAPTER I.
