Match background

Italian giants FC Internazionale Milano will be looking to get off the mark in Group G after their Matchday 1 away defeat by Turkish champions Fenerbahçe SK while PSV Eindhoven will be in confident mood following their 2-1 home victory over PFC CSKA Moskva.

• This will be the first time these two clubs have met in UEFA club competition and the Milan outfit will be aware that they have struggled to exert consistent superiority over opponents from the . That dates all the way back to 1971/72 and Inter's first-ever meeting with Dutch opposition when, in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final staged in , AFC Ajax won 2-0 with scoring both goals.

• In those bygone days the Italian club had very little joy in these head-to-heads, losing three of the first four contests with the other game drawn. Their recent record is much improved however, winning three of the last five contests with two ending as draws. In a total of 15 fixtures their statistics have a neat symmetry: W5 D5 L5.

• At home the Nerazzurri have won four of the seven ties with two defeats. The best victory margin came when they beat FC Groningen 5-1 in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup second round in a game played at the Arena Della Vittoria.

• Last year's UEFA Champions League campaign began on a disappointing note for Inter as they lost both their first home and away games without managing to score a single goal. But after allowing FC Bayern München to return home with a 2-0 victory on Matchday 2, Roberto Mancini's team repaired matters significantly, beating both FC Spartak Moskva (2-1) and Sporting Clube de Portugal (1-0) to help them take second place in Group B.

• Their attempt to win a third UEFA European Champion Clubs' Cup, and their first since 1964/65, foundered in the first knockout round when after a 2-2 draw with Valencia CF at San Siro, their Spanish opponents progressed on away goals with the return leg finishing goalless.

• The loss to Bayern was only Inter's second at home in the competition in 16 matches, including qualifying, a sequence in which they have won eleven with three draws. The other reverse came at the hands of city rivals AC Milan in the 2004/05 quarter-final second leg.

Last updated 01.10.2007 11:08:47CET Match background 1 FC Internazionale Milano - PSV Tuesday 2 October 2007 - 20.45CET Eindhoven MATCH PRESS KIT Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan • PSV are still looking for their first win in Italy, after two draws and five defeats, though their more recent results encourage the view that the elusive victory is not far away. Their first visit came in the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round, when they lost 1-0 to AS Roma and they followed that with three more defeats. In the last three trips however, PSV have twice returned with draws while at home against Italian foes they reign almost supreme – just one defeat (to AC Milan) in seven fixtures.

• They know the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza pretty well having faced AC Milan there twice in the last three seasons. Their 2004/05 UEFA Champions League semi-final was an epic affair. Two goals put Milan in pole position after the first leg at home, but in Eindhoven Ji-Sung Park and levelled the tie at 2-2. After Milan had regained the advantage, Cocu then made it 3-3 but the away goals rule put the Dutch side out. The following season they were paired in the same section as the 2005 runners-up and this time held the Milan team 0-0.

• Last season 's side, who are on an unbroken run of eleven appearances in Europe’s premier club competition, made it to the quarter-finals before losing in both legs to eventual finalists Liverpool FC – a team they had also met in the group stage. The two defeats at Anfield were the only blemishes in the campaign away from home – they recorded victories at FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Galatasaray SK, and then gained a creditable 1-1 draw at the Arsenal Stadium to remove the team from the first knockout round.

Match facts

Inter

• Zlatan Ibrahimović celebrates his 26th birthday the day after the PSV game, on 3 October, while Santiago Solari is 31 four days later and Julio Cruz turns 33 on 10 October.

• Iván Córdoba and Julio Cruz will complete their two-game bans against PSV, while Maicon is serving the second of a three-match ban and Nicolás Burdisso the second of his five-game suspension.

• Inter defeated ten-man AS Roma 4-1 on Saturday to go three points clear of the Giallorossi at the top of Serie A. The visitors took the lead on 28 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Ludovic Giuly handled Ibrahimović's header. The Roma was sent off, while Ibrahimović made no mistake from the spot. Simone Perrotta equalised for the hosts on 53 minutes but a quick salvo from substitutes Hernán Crespo and Julio Cruz (57 & 60) sealed the points. Córdoba rounded off an emphatic win on 68 minutes.

• Inter assistant coach Siniša Mihajlović said: "It was a very important game because we needed to regain confidence. This result and this performance is very important also for our future both in Serie A and in the UEFA Champions League."

• The Nerazzurri started without the injured Marco Materazzi and Patrick Vieira (both thigh) and Cristian Chivu (shoulder) while Maicon was suspended. Roberto Mancini moved Javier Zanetti to right-back and fielded Ibrahimović as a lone striker in front of a five-man midfield.

• "We were missing several important players and we decided to field three central instead of two as usual to have control of that crucial part of the pitch," Mihajlović said. "The tactic worked well. We are a physically strong side and it is taking a bit longer than others to reach peak form but we are on the right path."

• The penalty was Ibrahimović's seventh Serie A goal of the season.

• Ibrahimović and Olivier Dacourt were both substituted with injuries six minutes into the second half. The Swedish striker received a knock on his left foot while the French midfielder limped off with a groin problem. They will both undergo further tests alongside Chivu, a doubt for the PSV match with a shoulder injury.

Last updated 01.10.2007 11:08:47CET Match facts 2 FC Internazionale Milano - PSV Tuesday 2 October 2007 - 20.45CET Eindhoven MATCH PRESS KIT Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan • Nelson Rivas lost consciousness in training last weekend yet club doctor Franco Combi insists it is not serious, saying: "He's fine. The tests we have carried out so far are reassuring. For me, it's just a blackout. We have completed the neurological tests and they're fine."

• Inter returned to Serie A action on 23 September with a 2-2 draw at AS Livorno Calcio. Ibrahimović scored both goals for the Nerazzurri as Roberto Mancini's side twice came from behind to earn a draw despite ending with ten men following a late red card for Maicon.

• "We wanted to win and we would have if we had taken full advantage of a few of the many big chances we created in the first half," said Mancini. "However, it's normal to have difficult moments during the season. We have to try to improve and correct the mistakes we have made. We have great margins of improvement as we have great champions who are reaching peak physical condition. We know our strength and we will get back to winning regularly."

• Chivu (shoulder) as well as Materazzi and Vieira (both thigh) were all absent, although the first two are expected to return to action shortly. César Aparecido started on the right wing instead of Luís Figo while Adriano, who was not included in the UEFA Champions League squad, started in attack alongside Ibrahimović.

• "I have had a terrible 18 months so hearing the fans give you strength on and off the pitch is very important," Adriano said. "I know I can do a lot more and am working hard to do better and better. I'm sad because I can't contribute to these initial Champions League games, but now I will work hard to return."

• Chivu missed Inter's defeat at Fenerbahçe after dislocating his left shoulder during Romania's friendly international against Germany earlier this month. "Chivu, with a bit of pain and suffering, should play [against PSV]," Mancini said.

• Materazzi, meanwhile, suffered a thigh injury in August and was initially expected to be sidelined for four months after surgery although he could make an early return. "He is making progress but his muscle has to regain tone," Mancini said. "We will not take any risks with him but he could be ready to play against [SSC] Napoli on 6 October, or at least after the break for internationals."

• Three days after the Livorno draw Inter returned to winning ways with a 3-0 league defeat of UC Sampdoria. Ibrahimović scored in each half before Figo crowned victory with the third goal.

• "Our performance was almost perfect - I say 'almost' because perfection does not exist," said Mancini. "We started very well; we were eager to show we are improving and we did. I'm very satisfied with this performance."

• With Maicon starting a three-match ban captain Javier Zanetti returned to his old right-back role. Materazzi, Chivu and Vieira were still absent while Mancini rested Dejan Stanković so Dacourt and Esteban Cambiasso occupied central midfield with Figo and César on the flanks. Crespo partnered Ibrahimović in attack.

• Ibrahimović scored twice in a Serie A game for the third time this season having also managed the feat against Empoli FC and Livorno.

• New signing Vítor Hugo Gomes Paços, nicknamed 'Pelé', made his Inter debut against Sampdoria, playing 15 minutes as a substitute. "It was incredible to play at San Siro with so many champions," said the 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder.

• Former Italy coach Enzo Bearzot celebrated his 80th birthday on 26 September. The man who led Italy to victory in the 1982 FIFA World Cup spent four seasons at Inter during his playing days, making 47 appearances for the club. "I would like to wish the happiest of birthdays to Enzo, who is a football legend, and thank him once more for all that he has given to the world of football and to Italian football in particular," said UEFA President Michel Platini.

• Two Inter players have been included in the 55-man shortlist for the FIFPro World XI Player Awards: Marco Materazzi and Zlatan Ibrahimović. The winners will be announced on 5 October.

• Timmy Simons is three appearances away from playing 75 matches in UEFA club competition.

• Dirk Marcellis and Mike Zonneveld will complete their respective two-game bans against Inter.

• PSV were held to a 1-1 draw at NAC Breda on Saturday. Edison Méndez and missed chances for PSV in a goalless first half and the home side took the lead when Patrick Zwaanswijk's header was deflected in by after 65 minutes. Joonas Kolkka and Anthony Lurling went close to doubling the lead before Perez delivered PSV's equaliser on 76 minutes, finishing from close range.

• PSV coach Ronald Koeman: "We wanted to start very aggressively to put NAC under pressure. We succeeded in the first 20-25 minutes but failed to score. After they made it 1-0 in the second half we had to take risks which paid off with the equaliser. NAC certainly could have scored again - the spaces became too big and we could not close them down any more. You have to be glad not to lose after all that. After scoring the equaliser, we should have been a little bit smarter. But we came from behind and have been lucky in the final phase, so I cannot be completely unhappy."

• The NAC goal meant that goalkeeper ' run of 515 minutes without conceding since the start of the season was ended. The game was Gomes' 100th league match for PSV in which he has kept 56 clean sheets.

• Otman Bakkal returned from a knee injury as a 59th-minute substitute for Ismaïl Aissati but for Alcides, also suffering with a knee complaint, the match came too soon. The duo hope to be fit for the Milan match. is still out with a broken toe in his right foot, sustained in the previous UEFA Champions League match against PFC CSKA Moskva, and is expected to be missing for six weeks.

• PSV returned to domestic action on 23 September with a 4-0 defeat of previously unbeaten league leaders . A first-half double from Perez and other goals from Méndez and , swept the Rotterdam outfit aside.

• Gomes kept his fifth clean sheet in five Eredivisie fixtures since the start of the season, setting a new club record in the process. The previous milestone was set at the beginning of 2002/2003 when four successive shut-outs were achieved.

• On 26 September PSV beat Jong Heerenveen 3-0 away in the Dutch Cup second round, but were later thrown out of the competition. Koeman's men coasted to victory, thanks to goals from Jonathan Reis on the stroke of half time and Perez and Koevermans after the break.

• Despite the win, PSV have been excluded from the tournament as Manuel da Costa was not eligible to play because of a one-match suspension he still had to serve because of two yellow cards in last season's competition. Jong Heerenveen have been reinstated.

• "This is a huge blunder that cannot be justified", PSV Eindhoven general director said. "I have immediately decided to make drastic changes in internal procedures regarding this kind of administrative affair. The last word has not been spoken about this. The Dutch Cup is a beautiful prize that we always want to win. Because of this we cannot win it now, and that is regrettable for players, staff, fans and sponsors alike."

• Simons recently signed an improved contract, keeping the midfielder at the club until summer 2011. His previous deal was due to expire in 2009 but both player and club agreed to add a further two years with the option of an additional 12 months.

Last updated 01.10.2007 11:08:50CET Squad list 2 FC Internazionale Milano - PSV Tuesday 2 October 2007 - 20.45CET Eindhoven MATCH PRESS KIT Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan Head coach FC Internazionale Milano: Roberto Mancini Date of birth: 27 November 1964 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria, S.S. Lazio, Leicester City FC Coaching career: ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano

Roberto Mancini became FC Internazionale Milano's eleventh coach since 1995 on 7 July 2004, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with S.S. Lazio, and is now considered one of the most stylish and promising trainers in Italy. As a player Mancini made his Serie A debut on 13 September 1981 for Bologna FC, going on to play for Sampdoria UC, S.S. Lazio and Leicester City FC.

He won two Serie A titles (one each with Sampdoria and Lazio) six Coppa Italias (four with Sampdoria, two with Lazio) and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups (one with Sampdoria, one with Lazio). For the Italian national team, Mancini won 36 caps and scored four goals. He then started his coaching career as assistant to future England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at ACF Fiorentina in spring 2001. After leading Fiorentina to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Inter saw him as the man to end a Serie A title drought stretching back to the 1988/89 season and for the second time, having done so when appointed at Lazio, Mancini replaced Zaccheroni. He immediately led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory, Inter's first domestic honour since that 1989 Scudetto. Then, after Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points penalty, Inter were finally crowned champions of Italy again. Mancini repeated that success in 2006/07 although he has yet to make a major impact in the UEFA Champions League.

PSV Eindhoven: Ronald Koeman Date of birth: 21 March 1963 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: FC Groningen, AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona, Feyenoord Coaching career: Netherlands (assistant coach), FC Barcelona (assistant coach), BV Vitesse, AFC Ajax, SL Benfica, PSV Eindhoven

Ronald Koeman bounced back quickly from a disappointing end to his reign at AFC Ajax in February 2005, taking up the vacant position at SL Benfica following the departure of legendary Italian Giovanni Trapattoni. He guided the Lisbon club to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League and third place in Portugal before accepting the challenge of following at PSV Eindhoven in May 2006. Despite a difficult domestic campaign, Koeman had the last laugh by winning the Eredivisie title on the final day of a thrilling 2006/07 season.

Ajax's fortunes suffered a steady decline after Koeman got off to a brilliant start at the Amsterdam ArenA, winning a domestic double in 2001/02. Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV as the Netherlands' top team, and Koeman resigned after UEFA Cup elimination. It was no surprise he found his way to Eindhoven, as Koeman was a member of the PSV side that overcame Benfica in the 1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, converting the opening kick in PSV's 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory after 120 goalless minutes.

As well as being an accomplished sweeper, Koeman was a free-kick expert, and it was from a dead-ball that he scored FC Barcelona's winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final. Koeman and brother Erwin started out at their father's old club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFA European Championship. It was a momentous year, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved the way for a move to Barça in 1989 where he would win another four Spanish titles.

Kyros Vassaras is a regular in the UEFA Champions League. He was also one of the UEFA EURO 2004™ fourth officials, before taking charge, on home soil, of the Olympic final between Argentina and Paraguay.

The travel agent, who is married with a son, from Thessalonikj started refereeing in 1984, eleven years before his first top-flight match. "My father Antonios was a FIFA referee," he said. "I watched him from a very young age. He told me I should start refereeing as early as possible, as this would give me the chance to take part in major competitions if I was good enough. But he was tough with me – he encouraged me, but he would have told me to stop if he had thought I wasn't going to make a career out of it. After two years, he told me that I was on the right road, and he gave me every help."

The water sports enthusiast received his FIFA badge in 1998 and has been involved in the 1998 UEFA European Under-16 Championship, the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship, in which he took charge of the final, and the 2002 World Cup finals, in addition to serving as a fourth official at UEFA EURO 2000™. His most high-profile club fixtures to date are first-leg contests in the 2004/05 and 2006/07 UEFA Champions League semi-finals. The first saw AC Milan win 2-0 against PSV Eindhoven and the second was Manchester United FC's win 3-2 against eventual winners AC Milan. A domestic highlight was the 2007 Greek Cup final that saw Larissa FC win 2-1 against Panathinaikos FC.

EXCO meeting UEFA President Michel Platini has outlined his reasons for writing to European government heads to express his concern about the threat posed by "the malign and ever-present influence of money" within European football. "We are asking the political authorities to help us," Mr Platini said after the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Istanbul last Thursday. "Football is an enormous social resource which has taken on an enormous dimension, but it exists in no treaty. A lot of money has come into football because of its popularity, but since a lot of money has come into the game, not many rules have come alongside this money, and this is what I regret. We are approaching political people to help us to be able to regulate ourselves in the interests of football."

Turning to the issues of violence and racism in stadiums, Mr Platini repeated the policy of zero tolerance towards those who engage in such conduct. "We can take strong decisions – if we have to exclude supporters from stadiums or suspend clubs, we will, until the day that we have people in the stadiums who come to watch football, not to cause problems." Mr Platini also said he would applaud any referee who, in agreement with the match delegate, decided to stop a game because of racist conduct in stadiums. "Some things are fundamental in life," he explained. "A football match is important but there is conduct that we cannot tolerate in the stadiums."

Coach symposium UEFA Champions League playing trends was a key theme at the seventh UEFA Symposium for Coach Education Directors in London from 24-26 September. UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh reviewed last season's competition, based on thoughts by the Technical Study Group, which included Arsène Wenger, Marcello Lippi, Gérard Houllier and Valeri Gazzaev as well as the participants at the recent UEFA Elite Club Coaches Forum in Nyon.

Roxburgh said: "The UEFA Champions League is a benchmark for football standards and a yardstick for coaches." The central core was the small margin between winning and losing – in the knockout stage, two thirds of games were decided by a single goal and Wenger was quoted as saying: "In 2006/07 each of the 16 teams could have gone to the final." Among the trends noted were the importance of quick breaks and counterattacks, the high proportion of late goals – in the final 15 minutes – how adaptable teams needed to be, the vital importance of concentration, how well-organised every side was, and the crucial nature of specialist set-piece takers, combination play, pressing, keeping the ball and individual flair.

Healthy hearts Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard and his former manager Gérard Houllier joined UEFA in supporting the World Heart Federation's World Heart Day initiative on Sunday. "More than skill, technique or athleticism, football is about heart," said Gerrard. "That's why I'm encouraging everyone to team up for healthy hearts for this year's World Heart Day - to eat healthily, take regular exercise and avoid smoking." Sports psychologist Jacques Crevoisier added: "Working at the very top level of football, I know the importance teamwork plays. By working together you are much more likely to achieve your goals."

Key dates The 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage will be played over six matchdays - 18/19 September, 2/3 October, 23/24 October, 6/7 November, 27/28 November and 11/12 December. The first knockout round will follow over two legs on 19/20 February and 4/5 March after the draw in Nyon on 21 December. The draw for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be staged on 14 March. The last eight will be played on 1/2 and 8/9 April before the semi-finals on 22/23 and 29/30 April. The 2008 UEFA Champions League final will be played in Moscow on 21 May, before UEFA EURO 2008™ kicks off in Austria and Switzerland on 7 June.

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders AC Milan will be keen to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League, taking to the field at Olympiacos CFP on 18 September 2007 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The custodian shattered the record held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Only five other teams have ever gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point namely SK Rapid Wien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first group stage).

Levski also conceded 17 goals in their six outings last term, just two short of the record number let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign.

The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 13 domestic league winners from last season, but only Group G of the eight groups features four domestic title-holders - namely PSV Eindhoven, FC Internazionale Milano, Fenerbahçe SK and PFC CSKA Moskva. Alongside the 13 champions, there are ten runners-up and six third-placed finishers. The holders AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Valencia CF are the only clubs in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic league championship.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation in the UEFA Champions League to 12, a record in the competition. PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP and Real Madrid CF are making their eleventh consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal FC.

Last updated 01.10.2007 11:08:56CET Competition facts 1 FC Internazionale Milano - PSV Tuesday 2 October 2007 - 20.45CET Eindhoven MATCH PRESS KIT Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2006/07 knockout stage, Real Madrid CF surpassed Manchester United FC's record of nine consecutive seasons (which ended in 2005/06) in advancing past the group stage. Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. Madrid, have won the competition three times in the last ten years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However, in the last three seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs, S.S. Lazio, Rosenborg BK and VfB Stuttgart did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2006/07 season.

Past masters: Six clubs competing in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition when it started during the 1992/93 season. Olympique de Marseille were champions, beating AC Milan in the final, while PSV Eindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva, FC Porto and Rangers FC all participated in the group stage. In addition, VfB Stuttgart, AEK Athens FC and FC Barcelona were knocked out in the two rounds preceding the group stage that marked the competition proper.

Long road for debutants: Six clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cup second qualifying round including one of this season's two debutants, SK Slavia Praha. They are joined by Rangers, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, FC Steaua Bucuresti, Beşiktaş JK and Rosenborg as clubs who had to play four matches to claim their place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96, the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

Sevilla FC join Slavia in competing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time, although both clubs have previous experience of the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Schalke 04 have yet to play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fifth appearance in the competition, Schalke their third.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93 season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96), BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97) and FC Bayern München (2000/01). Of the last ten winners of the competition, Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, AC Milan (two), FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona, only FC Bayern München are not involved. Only two winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are not involved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99) and Feyenoord (2001/02). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remaining UEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray SK, Valencia CF, PFC CSKA Moskva and Sevilla FC (two).

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 31 August saw the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays one home and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings. a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) superior goal difference from all group matches played; e) higher number of goals scored; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previous five seasons. The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be played over two legs on 19/20 February and 4/5 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the Round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated from UEFA club competition for the season. This year's UEFA Champions League final is in Moscow on 21 May 2008.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2007/08, at least six places will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07, the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Champions League matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Champions League this season.
