Manchester City FC may have scraped a draw with Borussia Dortmund in their last home outing but their record suggests AFC Ajax will have their work cut out to take anything from the teams' matchday four fixture. • City have won 14 and drawn four home matches in UEFA competition since September 2008, although Ajax can take heart from both their 3-1 matchday three defeat of City and having won at Manchester United FC just over eight months ago. Match background • City are hosting Dutch opposition for the third time having twice got the better of FC Twente. They won 3-2 to secure a 4-3 aggregate success in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup first round, with Brian Kidd, now first-team coach, scoring the second goal. The score was the same when the clubs met again in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage – the only survivors from that game in City's squad are Joe Hart, Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta. • Mario Balotelli's late penalty equaliser against Dortmund on matchday two means City have still not lost a European home tie since a 1-0 reverse against FC Midtjylland in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup second qualifying round. They remain unbeaten at home in the European Cup, albeit having played only five matches to date, their brief 1968/69 campaign included. • Ajax ended a 40-year wait for an away victory over English opponents when beating City's neighbours United 2-1 in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32. Aras Özbiliz (37) and Toby Alderweireld (87) secured a 2-1 victory although it failed to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit. • Ajax's overall record away to English sides is W2 D4 L4. Their only other success was a 1-0 victory at Arsenal FC in the 1971/72 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals, though they did win their first European Cup final at Wembley against Panathinaikos FC in 1971. Team ties • Ajax coach made his international debut in September 1990 in the Netherlands' 1-0 defeat in Palermo against an Italy side for whom Roberto Mancini appeared as a 55th-minute substitute. Ajax assistant coach Dennis Bergkamp featured as a Dutch substitute. • Mancini's FC Internazionale Milano got the better of Ajax in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League round of 16. Inter came from two down to draw 2-2 in Amsterdam, before prevailing 1-0 at San Siro against an Ajax side including substitute Ryan Babel. • Bergkamp's record against City as an Arsenal FC player was played nine, won nine. • As a Liverpool FC player from 2007 to 2011, Babel faced City six times, winning once and losing once. He scored in the Netherlands' 4-1 defeat of Aleksandr Kolarov's Serbia in the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship final. • Alderweireld, alongside , helped Belgium to a 3-0 win at a Serbia side including Kolarov and Matija Nastasić in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier on 12 October. • Christian Poulsen spent 2010/11 at Liverpool, making 12 league appearances. • Daniel Hoesen joined Ajax from Fulham FC this summer, having not made a single appearance. • John Guidetti spent 2011/12 on loan at , scoring 20 goals in 23 league appearances, and hit a hat-trick against Ajax in a 4-2 home victory on 29 January. • Gareth Barry struck Aston Villa FC's winner past Kenneth Vermeer in a 2-1 home success against Ajax in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. James Milner was also in the Villa side. • Zabaleta was a 72nd-minute substitute in RCD Espanyol's 2-0 victory at Ajax in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup group stage. • Gaël Clichy was an 88th-minute substitute in Arsenal's 2-1 triumph at Ajax in the 2005/06 group stage. • Christian Eriksen and Poulsen faced Hart, Barry and Milner in Denmark's 2-1 home loss to England in February 2011.

Manchester City UEFA Champions League statistics • City are 18 games unbeaten at home in UEFA competition, qualifying included, winning 14 and drawing four since a 1-0 UEFA Cup loss to FC Midtjylland in August 2008. • City failed to reach the knockout stages last season despite collecting ten points in the group stage, matching the record for the highest points haul without advancing. SV Werder Bremen (2006/07), Olympiacos FC, FC Dynamo Kyiv (2004/05) and PSV Eindhoven (2003/04) all suffered an identical fate. • City have conceded seven goals, the joint highest total in the group stage along with Dynamo Kyiv, FC Nordsjælland and FC Spartak Moskva. • The English champions have been caught offside 14 times, more than any other club. Edin Džeko has attracted the raised flag on eight occasions, the most in the group stage. • Vincent Kompany and Yaya Touré's next yellow cards will incur bans. Miscellaneous • City failed to score for the first time in 15 games this season on Saturday as they drew 0-0 at West Ham United FC. James Milner pulled up with a hamstring problem in the pre-match warm-up. • Micah Richards was ruled out for up to four months with a knee injury sustained in the 1-0 win against Swansea City AFC on 27 October. The England defender only made his first appearance of the season on 6 October because of an ankle problem. • Sergio Agüero and Mario Balotelli are in the running for the FIFA Ballon d'Or award, the winner of which will be announced on 7 January in Zurich. Roberto Mancini is nominated for the coaching prize. • David Silva has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury in Spain's 1-1 draw with France on 16 October. • Sweden Under-21 striker John Guidetti signed a new three-year contract on 18 October. Ajax UEFA Champions League statistics • Ajax's win against Manchester City on matchday three was their first in five group stage games. • Christian Eriksen has run 39,138m; more than any other player in the group stage. • Niklas Moisander has completed 202 of his 231 attempted passes; only Marco Verratti (205/250) and Xavi Hernández (405/447) have managed more. Miscellaneous • Ajax's ten-match unbeaten start to the season ended on Saturday with a 2-0 home defeat by Vitesse. • Ajax beat amateur side ONS Sneek 2-0 in the Dutch Cup third round on 31 October thanks to late goals from Viktor Fischer and . They will travel to FC Groningen for the last 16 on 19 December. • Eyong Enoh came on as a substitute on matchday three, his first appearance in five months, and played 90 minutes at Sneek. • Ajax are five matches unbeaten away from home in all competitions. • Tobias Sana came on to make his Sweden debut as Erik Hamrén's side recovered from four down to draw 4-4 with Germany in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on 16 October. • Kenneth Vermeer received his first call-up to the senior Netherlands squad last month, but was not involved in the qualifiers against Andorra and Romania. • Thulani Serero (torn groin muscle, 23 September) and Kolbeinn Sigthórsson (shoulder, August) are expected to miss the group stage.

Manchester City FC: Roberto Mancini Date of birth: 27 November 1964 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria, S.S. Lazio, Leicester City FC Coaching career: ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano, Manchester City FC • Spent the majority of his playing career in Italy, winning Serie A titles and UEFA Cup Winners' Cups with both Sampdoria and Lazio as well as six editions of the Coppa Italia, four with Sampdoria and two with Lazio. Capped 36 times by Italy, the forward was a bronze medallist at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. • Started his coaching career as assistant to Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at Fiorentina in 2001. After leading the Viola to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and to the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2002/03. • Became coach of Inter in July 2004, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with Lazio; led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory in his debut season, Inter's first domestic honour since the 1989 Scudetto. • After Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points penalty, Inter were finally crowned champions of Italy again. Mancini repeated that success in 2006/07. • Left Inter in May 2008 despite winning another title. Mancini replaced Mark Hughes as manager of Manchester City midway through the 2009/10 Premier League season, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal. City finished fifth in his first campaign, third in his second – when they also lifted the FA Cup – and dramatically won the top flight for the first time in 44 years on the final day of his third.

AFC Ajax: Frank de Boer Date of birth: 15 May 1970 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax, FC Barcelona, Galatasaray AŞ, Rangers FC, Al Rayyan SC, Al-Shamal SC Coaching career: AFC Ajax (youth), Netherlands (assistant), Ajax • Started out as a left-back but matured into a dominant centre-half at Ajax, where he came through the ranks along with his twin Ronald. Broke into the first team aged 18, winning the first of five Eredivisie titles in 1990. • Part of the team that lifted the 1992 UEFA Cup, he helped Ajax beat AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League final in Vienna three years later, adding the UEFA Super Cup and European/South American Cup later that year. Won the domestic double in 1997/98, his last full season with Ajax before moving to Barcelona with Ronald. A Liga title followed in 1999 and De Boer made over 150 appearances for the Catalan giants. • Moved to Galatasaray in summer 2003, signing for Rangers the following January. Hung up his boots in 2006 after a spell in Qatar, ending a career that brought 112 caps for the Netherlands. De Boer was in the Oranje side that reached the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000 semi-finals, missing two penalties in a defeat by Italy in the latter. • Returned to Ajax as a youth coach in 2007 and the following year was appointed assistant to Bert van Marwijk with the senior national side, who reached the 2010 World Cup final. • In December 2010 he was installed as Ajax's caretaker coach following the departure of Martin Jol, good results subsequently earning him a three-and-a-half year deal as his first season in charge ended with the club's first league title since 2004. Helped the Amsterdam side retain the Eredivisie crown the following campaign.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only two teams have failed to score in a group stage: RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2004/05 and Maccabi Haifa FC in 2009/10. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest goals against total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
