First-time UEFA Champions League semi-finalists FC Schalke 04 welcome Manchester United FC to Gelsenkirchen for the first leg of a contest that has the look of an irresistible force meeting an immovable object. • For the irresistible force, read a Schalke side with a 100% winning record at home en route to the last four. The immovable object is a United team yet to concede a goal in recording four wins and one draw on their travels in the competition. • If three-time winners United have vast UEFA Champions League semi-final experience Schalke have in their ranks Raúl González, who lifted the trophy three times at Real Madrid CF, where he was twice United's nemesis. Match background • This is the clubs' first ever encounter yet United must rewrite their recent UEFA Champions League history against German teams if they are to progress to a fifth final and deny Rangnick's side a first appearance in the showpiece game. • Although they have lost just one of ten group stage meetings with opposition, winning five, in two-legged knockout ties United's record reads no wins and four defeats – most recently against FC Bayern München in last year's quarter-finals. • United visited Bayern for the first leg and took a first-minute lead through Wayne Rooney, only for Bayern to turn the tables with two goals in the last 15 minutes. Sir Alex Ferguson's men surrendered an advantage in the return too, allowing Bayern to claw their way back from 3-0 behind to 3-2 and thereby win the tie on away goals. • Those four defeats in full are: 1996/97 semi-finals: Borussia Dortmund (0-2 aggregate) 2000/01 quarter-finals: FC Bayern München (1-3 aggregate) 2001/02 semi-finals: Bayer 04 Leverkusen (3-3 aggregate, away goals) 2009/10 quarter-finals: FC Bayern München (4-4 aggregate, away goals) • Schalke suffered a 5-2 aggregate loss to United's neighbours Manchester City FC in the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, their 1-0 first-leg lead undone by a heavy defeat in Manchester. More recently Schalke surrendered their unbeaten home record against English opposition when losing 2-0 to City in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. • Schalke's overall home record against English teams reads W3 D1 L1. That City defeat followed a goalless draw against Chelsea FC in their previous home game with opponents, in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage. • The Gelsenkirchen club have recorded five straight home wins in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League, scoring 13 goals and conceding only three. United have an impressive away record, however, having won ten of their last 12 matches on the road in the competition – including four out of five this term without a single goal against. • United's record on German soil is W3 D4 L4. Their most recent success was a 3-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg in last term's group stage in which Michael Owen scored a hat-trick. • In two-legged ties with German teams United have recorded two wins and four defeats. That 1969/70 City tie aside, Schalke's only other two-legged meeting with English opposition came against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in the 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup (2-2 away, 2-1 home). • While this is Schalke's first time in the last four of the UEFA Champions League, they have contested three semi-finals in UEFA's other club competitions. They lost the aforementioned tie to eventual winners Manchester City in 1970 and went down 1-0 to Sevilla FC in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, but beat CD Tenerife 2-1 on aggregate en route to capturing the 1996/97 UEFA Cup. • United are competing in their 12th semi-final in Europe's elite club competition, their record to date reading four wins and seven defeats (W3 L3 under Sir Alex): 2008/09 Arsenal FC: 1-0 (h), 3-1 (a) 2007/08 FC Barcelona: 0-0 (a), 1-0 (h) 2006/07 AC Milan: 3-2 (h), 0-3 (a) 2001/02 Bayer 04 Leverkusen: 2-2 (h), 1-1 (a) 1998/99 Juventus: 1-1 (h), 3-2 (a) 1996/97 Borussia Dortmund: 0-1 (a), 0-1 (h) 1968/69 AC Milan: 0-2 (a), 1-0 (h) 1967/68 Real Madrid CF: 1-0 (h), 3-3 (a)

1965/66 FK Partizan: 0-2 (a), 1-0 (h) 1957/58 AC Milan: 2-1 (h), 0-4 (a) 1956/57 Real Madrid CF: 1-3 (a), 2-2 (h) • The date of this first leg falls 20 years and two days after Sir Alex's first European semi-final triumph with United, in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. A 1-1 home draw against Legia Warszawa on 24 April 1991 completed a 4-2 aggregate victory, setting up a final meeting with FC Barcelona which the English side won 2-1. • With Gary Neville's retirement earlier this season, Ryan Giggs is now the only survivor of the United team that defeated Bayern 2-1 in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final in Barcelona. Team ties • Raúl scored four UEFA Champions League goals in three games against United for Real Madrid. He appeared in both matches of Madrid's quarter-final win in 1999/2000, striking twice in the 3-2 second-leg success in Manchester that secured an identical aggregate victory. Raúl hit two more when Madrid beat United 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu in a quarter-final first leg in 2002/03. Giggs and Paul Scholes lined up against Raúl in both of those seasons, while Wes Brown and Rio Ferdinand faced the Spaniard in 2003/03. Both times Raúl went on to earn a winners' medal. • Dimitar Berbatov was a substitute in the Leverkusen team beaten 2-1 by Madrid in the 2002 UEFA Champions League final, Raúl scoring the first goal. During his time with Leverkusen from 2000 to 2006, Berbatov hit six league goals in 11 meetings with Schalke. • Rooney was sent off at the Arena AufSchalke in the 62nd minute of England's 2006 FIFA World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal. Ferdinand was also in the England side beaten on penalties after a goalless draw. • At the 2010 World Cup Rooney's England went down 4-1 to Manuel Neuer's Germany in the round of 16. Neuer had earlier been on the losing side against Nemanja Vidić's Serbia, who were 1-0 victors in the group stage. Hans Sarpei's Ghana team beat Vidić and Serbia 1-0 in the countries' opening game in South Africa. • was in the Japan team that beat Park Ji-Sung's Korea Republic on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the AFC Asian Cup semi-finals in Qatar in January. • Park struck one of Korea Republic's goals in a 2-0 first-round victory against Angelos Charisteas's Greece at last year's World Cup. The Korean was a team-mate of Jefferson Farfán at PSV Eindhoven in 2004/05, the pair losing a UEFA Champions League semi-final against AC Milan. • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar played in both legs of Milan's 7-2 aggregate defeat by United in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League round of 16. • Farfán and Berbatov scored the goals as PSV and Tottenham Hotspur FC drew 1-1 on aggregate in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 16. Both also converted their kicks in the resulting penalty shoot-out, PSV prevailing 6-5. • Nicolas Plestan's LOSC Lille Métropole side were beaten 1-0 both home and away by United in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Last updated 25/04/11 22:55:14CET 10 Squad list FC Schalke 04 - Manchester United FC Tuesday 26 April 2011 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) MATCH PRESS KIT Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen Head coach

FC Schalke 04: Ralf Rangnick Date of birth: 29 June 1958 Nationality: German Playing career: VfB Stuttgart II, Southwick FC, VfR Heilbronn, SSV Ulm 1846, FC Viktoria Backnang, TSV Lippoldsweiler Coaching career: FC Viktoria Backnang, TSV Lippoldsweiler, SC Korb, SSV Reutlingen 1905, SSV Ulm 1846, VfB Stuttgart, , FC Schalke 04 (twice), TSG 1899 Hoffenheim • Ralf Rangnick is a thoughtful, academic coach who is most at home on the training ground. As a player he never made it past the amateur ranks at Stuttgart, but he returned to take charge of their amateur team in 1985 having cut his teeth at regional league side Viktoria Backnang. • Later became the club's youth director before taking over at Reutlingen and then accepting the job at second-tier outfit Ulm in 1997. Having almost guided the part-timers to promotion, Stuttgart made him head coach in 1999, but he failed to bring the same kind of success, although he did win a UEFA Intertoto Cup title in summer 2000 before leaving the following February. • His next stop was Hannover, where he achieved promotion to the first division as champions in 2001/02, his first season – only to be sacked near the end of his third season with the side slipping down the table. Schalke had nonetheless seen enough to appoint him coach early in 2004/05. • Rangnick led the Gelsenkirchen club to the German Cup final and second place in the Bundesliga, but an early UEFA Champions League elimination plus struggles in the league and cup prompted his departure in December 2005. • Took over at Hoffenheim in summer 2006 and went on to lead the club from the third division to the upper reaches of the Bundesliga, where they were established by the time of Rangnick's resignation in January 2011. Two months later, he returned to Schalke, signing a three-year contract the day after Felix Magath's departure.

Manchester United FC: Sir Alex Ferguson Date of birth: 31 December 1941 Nationality: Scottish Playing career: Queen's Park FC, Saint Johnstone FC, Dunfermline Athletic FC, Rangers FC, Falkirk FC (player-coach), Ayr United FC Coaching career: East Stirlingshire FC, Saint Mirren FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC • Shot to prominence at Aberdeen by breaking the Old Firm's 14-year stranglehold on the Scottish title in 1980. • Claimed a first European title three years later when the Dons beat Real Madrid CF to lift the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup – earning him freedom of the City of Aberdeen. • Replaced Ron Atkinson at Old Trafford in November 1986, and ended United's 26-year wait for an English title in 1993. Has since added ten more championships to a domestic collection which includes five FA Cups and four League Cups. • Guided United to UEFA Cup Winners' Cup glory with victory against FC Barcelona in 1991, though his greatest achievements are the UEFA Champions League triumphs of 1999 and 2008. • Knighted in June 1999, Sir Alex is head of the UEFA Coaches Panel.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 24 occasions, including FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Inter's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • Ten ties have now gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, two first knockout round encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • The biggest winning margin in a UEFA Champions League semi-final game has been three goals. AFC Ajax recorded a 5-2 home success in the 1994/95 second leg against Bayern, while there were 4-1 victories for Juventus at home against Ajax (second leg) and AS Monaco FC (first leg) in 1996/97 and 1997/98 respectively, and Valencia at home to Barcelona (first leg) in 1999/2000. On six other occasions teams won 3-0, most recently Bayern's defeat of Lyon in the 2009/10 second leg. • That 4-1 win for Juventus against Monaco in 1997/98 was part of the biggest aggregate semi-final score. The principality club won 3-2 in their home return to make it ten goals in the tie. • Bayern's 4-0 defeat of Lyon in 2009/10 is the joint biggest aggregate win in a UEFA Champions League semi-final, equalling Juventus' 6-2 victory against Ajax in 1996/97. • Madrid's 6-0 second-leg win against FC Zürich in 1963/64 is the biggest European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final victory. Eintracht Frankfurt's 12-4 success against Rangers FC in 1959/60 is the biggest aggregate total. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won – or even reached the final of – the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome). Five teams won European Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6 of the 2007/08 edition. • Filippo Inzaghi is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 87 days, in AC Milan's 2-2 draw against Real Madrid CF on 3 November 2010. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against Steaua on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
