Juventus v Werder Bremen MATCH PRESS KIT Delle Alpi, Turin Tuesday, 7 March 2006 - 20:45 CET First knockout round - Matchday 8

After staging a remarkable late revival to clinch a 3-2 victory against Juventus on Matchday 7, Werder Bremen travel for the return knowing they only have to repeat their last result in to claim a UEFA Champions League quarter-final place for the first time.

Important draw · A 1-1 draw away to on Matchday 3 helped the German club qualify from Group C as runners-up to FC Barcelona. A header from deep into added time two weeks ago means that if Bremen can stay all-square with Juventus in the Stadio Delle Alpi then they can write a new chapter in their club©s history.

Juventus blow · The late goal in the Weserstadion was a heavy blow for 's team who had gone behind to 's first-half opener but then struck back with devastating effect as Pavel Nedvěd and scored twice in the space of nine minutes late on. The match had seemed to have turned in the visitors© favour before ©s clever finish three minutes from time paved the way for a stunning finale.

Six wins · Confidence for the Bianconeri in the return game centres on their recent winning form at home in the UEFA Champions League. Since losing 1-0 at home to RC Deportivo La Coruña in the second leg of the 2003/04 first knockout round, they have played seven games in the competition proper, winning seven and drawing one. Amazingly they have conceded only one goal in that run ± to FC Bayern München in this season©s Matchday 4.

· They have won all their last three home games against opposition from Germany and in 18 games have only numbered three defeats in total.

Strong challenge · Juventus, twice winners of the European Champion Clubs© Cup and aiming for a third quarter-final appearance in four seasons, always had the look of qualifiers from their group and successive wins in their first two fixtures did nothing to alter that view.

· Trezeguet was on the scoresheet in three of the first four games and his goal two weeks ago has raised his tally for this campaign to five.

Bad memory banished · Even if Bremen bow out they will have at least banished the bitter memory of last season©s first knockout round when they suffered a 10-2 aggregate defeat by .

· A 7-2 defeat in France was a humiliating experience while in this campaign their three away fixtures in Group C resulted in two defeats and one draw. Nevertheless ©s team qualified with seven points, the same number as Udinese Calcio who they edged out thanks to a superior head-to-head record.

Final flourish · After losing their first two games in the section it was not thought that Bremen would be serious contenders but the point they picked up in Italy on Matchday 3 gave them an impetus that eventually saw them through. A 5-1 victory against Panathinaikos FC meant that they finished with a flourish.

Two wins · Bremen have twice won on Italian soil, the last occasion being the third round of the 1989/90 UEFA Cup when they overcame Napoli Soccer 3-2. In eight away fixtures they have encountered defeat on four occasions.

Knockout format · Clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis, with the team scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more goals away qualifies. If this proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, the away goals count double (ie. the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.

Head coach profiles

Fabio Capello AC Milan, Real Madrid CF, AS Roma, Juventus. A glance at Fabio Capello©s former and present employers tells you who the biggest clubs turn to when they need success. The Italian©s combination of passion and pragmatism has proved a winning formula, bringing league titles to each of the four teams of which he has taken charge. As a player, Capello enjoyed successful spells at Roma, Juve and Milan and won 32 caps for Italy.

While Capello©s coaching acumen is beyond question, he has always enjoyed the services of top players to turn his tactical visions into reality. Milan won four Serie A titles in five seasons between 1991 and 1996, including an unbeaten campaign in 1991/92. Along the way, they had contributions from some of the club©s greatest-ever servants including Dutch trio Marco van Basten, and and defensive legends and Paolo Maldini. They also lifted the 1994 UEFA Champions League, beating FC Barcelona 4-0 in the final. Capello then spent a single season at Madrid before returning to Milan.

Two seasons and another league championship later, Capello©s next stop was Roma, who had won Serie A just twice before. In 2000, he splashed out on , and the Argentinian legend©s goals helped bring the title back to the Italian capital. With the club suffering from financial difficulties, Capello left for Juventus in May 2004 and immediately snapped up Emerson, Fabio Cannavaro and Zlatan Ibrahimović, each of whom played key roles in Juve©s league triumph last season.

Thomas Schaaf One-club man Thomas Schaaf is one of the most unflappable coaches on the European circuit who, through a combination of tactical acumen and shrewd work in the transfer market, has turned Werder Bremen into one of Germany©s most impressive teams in recent years.

Schaaf, a defender, enjoyed a terrific 16-season stay at Bremen (playing 263 Bundesliga matches) after breaking through in 1978, forming close ties which led to him joining the coaching set-up at the Weserstadion after hanging up his boots. He served his apprenticeship with the Under-18s and the reserves before taking control of the first team alongside former team-mate Klaus Allofs in May 1999 and successfully helping Bremen avoid the drop. Schaaf has matured into a patient, thoughtful and diligent coach, working alongside Allofs to assemble a fine team.

Schaaf considers as his mentor, and enjoyed almost as spectacular a success in 2004 as the coach of UEFA EURO 2004™ winners Greece by guiding Bremen to the Bundesliga (clinched with a defeat of runners-up FC Bayern München) and German Cup double. Although Bremen failed to hit those heights last season, they did enjoy a promising UEFA Champions League campaign before being ambushed 10-2 on aggregate by Olympique Lyonnais - a defeat they hoped to atone for after qualifying yet again for Europe©s premier club competition.

Referee

Name Nat. DoB UCL UEFA Graham Poll ENG 29.07.1963 28 55

Graham Poll is one of the most experienced referees in England and Europe, and has enjoyed a wealth of big-game appointments over the years.

The 42-year-old from Tring, just north of London, spent five years in the English professional game as an assistant referee having reached the national list in that role at the surprisingly early age of 22. He graduated to the middle in 1991, took charge of his first English Premiership match two years later and made it to the international referees© list in 1996 having gained his FIFA international badge. The same year, he officiated at the UEFA European Under-16 Championship in Austria before going on to the FA Charity Shield between Arsenal FC and Manchester United FC back in England in 1998.

He took charge of two matches at UEFA EURO 2000™ in Belgium and the Netherlands - having refereed the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern München in May 2000 - and has regularly officiated at the highest levels in domestic and continental competition ever since. In addition, he also took charge of the last FA Cup final at the old Wembley stadium, between Chelsea FC and Aston Villa FC in May 2000.

During the 2003/04 season, he took charge of four UEFA Champions League matches and one UEFA Cup game, as well as the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying play-off between Spain and Norway. The 2004/05 campaign culminated in Poll taking charge of the UEFA Cup final between PFC CSKA Moskva and Sporting Clube de Portugal in Lisbon, as well as six UEFA Champions League matches, the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Latvia and Portugal, and an international friendly match between Slovenia and Germany.

This season, Poll has overseen home UEFA Champions League victories for Olympique Lyonnais (2-1 v Olympiacos CFP) and PSV Eindhoven (1-0 v AC Milan) as well as the decisive second leg of the FIFA World Cup play-off between the Czech Republic and Norway in Prague on 16 November and the AFC FIFA World Cup play-off final second leg between Bahrain and Uzbekistan.

At home, Poll has firmly established himself as one of England©s top officials, taking charge of the English League Cup final between Blackburn Rovers FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC in 2002 and the Championship play-off final between Crystal Palace FC and West Ham United FC in 2004.

Domestic news

Juventus will go into their return against Werder Bremen on Tuesday looking to overturn a 3-2 deficit, and the Italian champions will be in confident mood having won both matches since that first encounter although their German visitors have also remained unbeaten since the first leg at the Weserstadion on 22 February.

UC Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus A Pavel Nedvěd strike proved enough to give Juventus victory in Genoa to help the Serie A leaders maintain a ten-point advantage over AC Milan at the top of the table. The Czech Republic headed the only goal of the game 24 minutes into the second half. Juventus were without first-choice strikers David Trezeguet (ankle) and Zlatan Ibrahimović (knee) for Saturday©s match, while Gianluca Zambrotta switched to the right side of defence. Fabio Capello, whose team have also defeated US Leece 3-1 since the first leg against Bremen, were also without defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Alessandro Birindelli for the trip to Sampdoria.

Capello said: "We have a great attitude and believe that we can win against anyone. We never think about who is missing or injured, but we always play to win. Sampdoria performed well in the first half, they were aggressive, fast and gave us some problems. At half-time I told my players that Sampdoria could not keep on playing as they did in the first period and after that we played much better. We scored and could have even added a second goal."

Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-1 Werder Bremen Second-placed Bremen could only collect a point from their Bundesliga visit to Leverkusen on Saturday, thereby failing to take full advantage of leaders FC Bayern München©s defeat against Hamburger SV and remaining eight points adrift of the summit. Midfielder Torsten Frings opened the scoring for Bremen from the penalty spot after just three minutes but struck back shortly before half-time.

Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf had to do without first-choice goalkeeper Andreas Reinke because of injury while defender Naldo (groin), captain Frank Baumann (foot), and striker Aaron Hunt (knee) were also ruled out. Tim Wiese again took over from Reinke between the posts and goalscorer Frings replaced Daniel Jensen in the starting lineup. "We did not perform in the free way Bremen are known to," said Wiese. "Leverkusen were the better side and played with more aggression than us. In the end we have to be happy that we did not lose the game." The Leverkusen draw followed a 2-0 home victory against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach on 25 February which was achieved thanks to first-half goals from Ivan Klasnić and Miroslav Klose.

General competition information

UEFA©s most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.
