The Development of Shikoku Henro: The THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHIKOKU HENRO The Formation and Dissemination of a Pilgrimage in Pre- Modern Japan: A Case Study of Shikoku by EIJI OKAWA B.A., University of British Columbia, 2003 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER IN ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) May 2009 ©Eiji Okawa 2009 Abstract This study will examine the development of a pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan, commonly known as Shikoku henro. Anyone familiar with this pilgrimage would know that this is a topic that has drawn much academic and non-academic attention in the recent years. We have come to know more about this pilgrimage than ever before, thanks to the meticulous studies that have been conducted by scholars in and out of Japan. If there is a general trend in the recent studies, it is toward the anthropological/sociological interpretation of the pilgrimage, and the interactions of the pilgrimage with the society in which it exists. These studies also tend to focus on the modern era. Doubtless, such focuses are immensely valuable when seeking to shed light to this complex phenomenon. However, it may be time that we can reconsider the historical processes around this pilgrimage, by incorporating the recent findings of this and other pilgrimages, and by re-examining the historical materials pertaining to the subject. Thus, I will focus on the pre-modern developments in the pilgrimage of Shikoku. Specifically, the religious themes and the activities of the religious specialists in relation to the pilgrimage will be thoroughly analyzed in the context of pre-modern Japan (before 1868). In doing so, I will deal with issues that have yet to be addressed, such as the relationship between the pilgrimage and the pilgrimage temples. One might be inclined to assume that the two came hand in hand from the start—that the temples and their affiliates, as the prime beneficiaries of the pilgrimage, must have taken various measures to lure the pilgrims. Both pilgrimages are similar in that one goes to sacred sites; however, the pilgrimage of shikoku has come to be traditionally called ‘shikoku henro’. The shikoku pilgrimage is said to be 1,400 kilometres long and takes fifty to sixty days for someone to walk the entire route. ryo#zenji, situated in Tokushima prefecture, has been designated as temple number one and o>kuboji, of kagawa prefecture, has been designated as temple number eighty-eight. actually, the ideal route is to begin at ryo#zenji in awa (Tokushima prefec- ture), then on to Tosa (ko#chi prefecture), then iyo (ehime prefecture), then sanuki (kagawa prefecture), arriving finally at Ōkuboji. Doing the pilgrimage in numerical order is called jun- uchi, while doing it all in reverse order, in other words, beginning at o>kuboji, is called gyaku-uchi. Origin of the number eighty-eight it is not at all clear what the significance of the number eighty- eight is, but there are various theories which offer possible explanations.     Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples of Shikoku Island: A Bibliography of Resources in English Naomi Zimmer LIS 705, Fall 2005 The most widely known work in English about the Shikoku pilgrimage is undoubtedly Oliver Statler’s 1983 book Japanese Pilgrimage , which combines a personal account of Statler’s pilgrimage in Shikoku with substantial background and cultural information on the topic. The University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library Japan Collection houses Statler’s personal papers in the Oliver Statler Collection , which includes several boxes of material related to the Shikoku pilgrimage. The Oliver Statler Collection is an unparalleled and one of a kind source of information in English on the Shikoku pilgrimage. The contents range from Statler’s detailed notes on each of the 88 temples to the original manuscript of Japanese Pilgrimage . Also included in the collection are several hand-written translations of previous works on the pilgrimage that were originally published in Japanese or languages other than English. The Oliver Statler Collection may be the only existing English translations of many of these works, as they were never published in English. The Collection also contains several photo albums documenting Statler’s pilgrimages on Shikoku taken between 1968 and 1979. A Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples in Shikoku Island (1973) is likely the earliest example of an English-language monograph on the specific topic of the Shikoku pilgrimage. This book, written by the Japanese author Mayumi Banzai, focuses on the legendary priest Kobo Daishi (774-835 A.D.) and the details of his association with the Shikoku pilgrimage. The books A Henro Pilgrimage Guide to the Eighty-eight Temples on Shikoku, Japan (Taisen Miyata), Echoes of Incense: a Pilgrimage in Japan (Don Weiss), The Traveler's Guide to Japanese Pilgrimages (Ed Readicker-Henderson), and Tales of a Summer Henro (Craig McLachlan) are all more recent personal accounts offering a less scholarly and more practical “guidebook” look at the pilgrimage.

    TRANSLATED BY SHOHAKl AND TOM WRIGHT ARKANA OPENING THE HAND OF THOUGHT Kosho Uchiyama Roshi was born in Tokyo in 1911. He received a master's degree in Western philosophy at Waseda University in 1937 and became a Zen priest three years later under Kodo Sawaki Roshi. Upon Sawaki Roshi's death in 1965, he assumed the abbotship of Antaiji, a temple and monastery then located near Kyoto. Uchiyama Roshi developed the practice at Anataiji, including monthly five-day sesshins, and often traveled throughout Japan, lec- turing and leading sesshins. He retired from Antaiji in 1975 and now lives with his wife at N6ke-in, a small temple outside Kyoto. He has written over twenty texts on Zen, including translations of Dogen Zenji into modern Japanese with commentaries, one of which is available in English (Refining Your Life, Tokyo: Weatherhill, 1983). Uchiyama Roshi is also well known in the world of origami, of which he is a master; he has published several books on origami. Shohaku Okumura was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1948. He studied Zen Buddhism at Komazawa University in Tokyo and was ordained as a priest by Uchiyama Roshi in 1970, practicing under him at An- taiji. From 1975 to 1982 he practiced at the Pioneer Valley Zendo in Massachusetts. After he returned to Japan, he began translating Dogen Zenji's and Uchiyama Roshi's writings into English with Tom Wright and other American practitioners. From 1984 to 1992 Rev. Okumura led practice at Shorinji, near Kyoto, as a teacher of the Kyoto Soto Zen Center, working mainly with Westerners.

    SPECIAL REPORT Lessons Learned from the Kobe Earthquake A Japanese Perspective Hiroshi Muguruma This report presents an overview of the Ph.D. performance of reinforced and precast, Professor Emeritus Department of prestressed concrete buildings during the Architectural Engineering Kyoto University Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake (also known as Kyoto, Japan the Great Hanshin earthquake) of January 17, 1995, situated in and around the city of Kobe, Japan. The performance of pile foundations is also examined. Highway bridges, rapid transit structures, and other special structures are covered elsewhere. The assessment of damage is related to the Minehiro Nishiyama evolution of design code provisions for Ph.D. concrete building structures in Japan. Department of Preliminary reports indicate that precast, Architectural Engineering Kyoto University prestressed concrete structures performed Kyoto, Japan remarkably well during the earthquake, especially those designed with recent seismic code provisions.
