Language and Cultural Barriers Pertaining to the Polish Army’S 1St Armoured Division in Normandy, August 1944 POLES APART: Language and Cultural Barriers Pertaining to the Polish Army’s 1st Armoured Division in Normandy, August 1944. by Robert Schuman Williams A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in History in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (May, 2017) Copyright ©Robert Schuman Williams, 2017 Abstract This thesis is a study of the effects language and culture on military operations using the experience of the 1st Polish Armoured Division under command of the II Canadian Corps in North Western Europe in August 1944. The challenges in multinational operations have been, and remain, understanding both allies and the environment in which one is going to be conducting operations. Rapid mutually intelligible communication is a key factor to mission success, whether during high tempo operations or while conducting deliberate planning and administrative work with non-English speaking allies. This dissertation begins with background material on the cultural and linguistic effects on multi- national military operations, examining literature on the diaspora Polish communities and what has been said about the Polish and Canadian armies’ performances in North-West Europe in August 1944. This is followed by a description of the Pigeau-McCann common intent factors that will be used as a framework to highlight what could be done to overcome the effects of language and culture on the employment of military units and formations. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of culture on leadership in both interpersonal and staff interactions, using the Pigeau- McCann Balanced Command Envelope (BCE) as a subsidiary model to help describe the effect that two commanders, Maczek and Simonds, had on the achievement of common intent. Despite the linguistic and cultural challenges encountered, the 1st Polish Armoured Division fared well in combat and could possibly have done better had more emphasis been placed on bridging the gaps caused by linguistic and cultural differences, joint training, common understanding of the use of liaison teams and liaison officers and emphasis on concise written directions. These conclusions remain relevant in making more effective today’s multinational and, more often than not, multi-lingual military coalitions. Chapter 1 Introduction War is chaotic and despite leaders’ best laid plans confusion usually prevails. The participants are often tired, rarely fully informed as to enemy intentions, and in order to maintain momentum or operational tempo in battle they are forced to make difficult choices as a result of successes and failures, both those of their enemies. Needless to say, in the confusion that prevails, time and resources are also rarely in adequate supply. If, into this mixture of competing factors is added the various cultural backgrounds and primary languages of allies, limited or non-existent capabilities in the operating language of superior headquarters and neighbouring allied military formations and units, clear communication of operational intent and reporting of combat results becomes even more of a challenge if not an impossibility. Mistakes are going to happen as a result of misunderstandings and therefore additional attention must be paid to minimize how language and cultural differences can affect negatively communications. When one is building an international and possibly multi-lingual coalition, the challenges that military leaders and their staffs face will require more effort to overcome than would be

    Poland – Germany – History Issue: 18 /2020 26’02’21 The Polish-French Alliance of 1921 By Prof. dr hab. Stanisław Żerko Concluded in February 1921, Poland’s alliance treaty with France, which was intended to afford the former an additional level of protection against German aggression, was the centerpiece of Poland’s foreign policy during the Interwar Period. However, from Poland’s viewpoint, the alliance had all along been fraught with significant shortcomings. With the passage of time, it lost some of its significance as Paris increasingly disregarded Warsaw’s interests. This trend was epitomized by the Locarno conference of 1925, which marked the beginning of the Franco-German rapprochement. By 1933-1934, Poland began to revise its foreign policy with an eye to turning the alliance into a partnership. This effort turned out to be unsuccessful. It was not until the diplomatic crisis of 1939 that the treaty was strengthened and complemented with an Anglo-Polish alliance, which nevertheless failed to avert the German attack on Poland. Despite both France and Great Britain having declared war against the Reich on September 3, 1939, neither provided their Polish ally with due assistance. However, French support was the main factor for an outcome that was generally favorable to Poland, which was to redraw its border with Germany during the Paris peace conference in 1919. It seems that the terms imposed on the Reich in the Treaty of Versailles were all that Poland could ever have hoped to achieve given the balance of power at the time. One should bear in mind that France made a significant contribution to organizing and arming the Polish Army, especially when the Republic of Poland came under threat from Soviet Russia in the summer of 1920.

Within a short time, on 17 September, a second invasion took place: in close cooperation with the Germans, the Soviet army invaded from the east, and some 1,500,000 Poles were subsequently deported to prisons, concentration camps and exile in the Soviet Union. In the Soviet Union, all forms of religious life were systematically suppressed. Those who openly professed their religious faith qualified for prison and death. Thus the Poles, the vast majority of whom were religious believers, were an endangered species in Russia. Ironically, it was the Germap. invasion of Russia in June 1941 which helped to relax for a year the deadly yoke of this oppression. At the time of this invasion, over 100,000 of the exiled Poles enjoyed, one may say, a degree of religious freedom. Their camps became oases of religious life unique in the country; and they are the subject of this article. Introduction: the Historical Context The written history of Poland from the tenth century onwards shows a strong link between church and state. The adoption of Christianity from Rome is seen now not only as a result of the zealous work of missionaries but also as a calculated political decision by the reigning prince. By accepting the influence of Rome, the Polish Kingdom was 'westernised' and under the leadership of the Piast family incorporated into a Christian Europe.

As a Pole by birth I had been brought up in the deep love to my home country and also to her armed forces as majority of men in my family served in the Polish Armed Forces and fought in both World Wars and in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921. This is typical for many Polish families in the last century. World War II left a deep wound in the Polish nation. The defeat of September 1939 campaign was very special. The results of it are felt to the present day not only in every family but also in the life of the Polish nation as the whole. World War II was the largest military conflict in the contemporary world history. Military operations covered several continents and involved 61 countries and many nations. It divided the war into two fighting camps: axis forces of Berlin - Rome -Tokyo and allied forces (with some changes after 1941). The war lasted six years from September 1, 1939 (the German invasion of Poland) to September 4, 1945, marked by the surrender of Imperial Japan, and Europe by the capitulation of Germany on May 8 and 9, 1945. In different countries the beginning of this war is different and it depends on the date of actual access to the fight. The main reason of this war was the continuous German attempts to break the Versailles treaty, which established a new world and especially European order in 1919.

Daniel Pellerin Supervisor: Serge Marc Durflinger 2016 During the Second World War, training was the Canadian Army’s longest sustained activity. Aside from isolated engagements at Hong Kong and Dieppe, the Canadians did not fight in a protracted campaign until the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The years that Canadian infantry units spent training in the United Kingdom were formative in the history of the Canadian Army. Despite what much of the historical literature has suggested, training succeeded in making the Canadian infantry capable of succeeding in battle against German forces. Canadian infantry training showed a definite progression towards professionalism and away from a pervasive prewar mentality that the infantry was a largely unskilled arm and that training infantrymen did not require special expertise. From 1939 to 1941, Canadian infantry training suffered from problems ranging from equipment shortages to poor senior leadership. In late 1941, the Canadians were introduced to a new method of training called “battle drill,” which broke tactical manoeuvres into simple movements, encouraged initiative among junior leaders, and greatly boosted the men’s morale.

    http://www.ucalgary.ca/hic • ISSN 1492-7810 2010/11 • Vol. 9, No. 1 The Americanization of the Canadian Army’s Intellectual Development, 1946-1956 Alexander Herd Abstract Canadian scholarship has detailed the impact of increasing American political, economic, and socio-cultural influences on post-Second World War Canada. This paper demonstrates that the Canadian Army was likewise influenced by the Americans, and changes to the army’s professional military education are evidence of the “Americanization” of the army. During the early Cold War period, Canadian Army staff officer education increasingly incorporated United States Army doctrine, ranging from the basic organization of American formations to complex future military strategy. Research is primarily based on the annual staff course syllabi at the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston, Ontario, which indicate that Canadian Army leaders were sensitive not only to the realities of fighting alongside the Americans in a future war, but to the necessity of making the Canadian Army, previously historically and culturally a British army, compatible with its American counterpart. In the context of limited scholarship on the early Cold War Canadian Army, this paper advances the argument that the army’s intellectual capacity to wage war was largely determined by external influences. During the first decade after the Second World War, Canadian society underwent a distinct transition. Urwin The Canadian Militia, since its beginning, has been underfunded and under-supported by the government, no matter which political party was in power. This trend continued throughout the interwar years of 1919 to 1939. During these years, the Militia’s members had to improvise a great deal of the time in their efforts to attain military effectiveness. This included much of their training, which they often funded with their own pay. They created their own training apparatuses, such as mock tanks, so that their preparations had a hint of realism. Officers designed interesting and unique exercises to challenge their personnel. All these actions helped create esprit de corps in the Militia, particularly the half composed of citizen soldiers, the Non- Permanent Active Militia. The regulars, the Permanent Active Militia (or Permanent Force), also relied on their own efforts to improve themselves as soldiers. They found intellectual nourishment in an excellent service journal, the Canadian Defence Quarterly, and British schools. The Militia learned to endure in these years because of all the trials its members faced. The interwar years are important for their impact on how the Canadian Army (as it was known after 1940) would fight the Second World War.

For one thing, it was the first major battle that the troops of the Canadian Corps fought under one of their own, Lieutenant- General Sir Arthur Currie. Most people forget that Canadian Corps fought the battle of Vimy Ridge under British Lieutenant-General Sir Julian Byng, with a mostly-British staff.
